Our Little Lies – Sue Watson

How far would you go to protect your perfect life?

Marianne has a life others dream of. A beautiful townhouse on the best street in the neighbourhood. Three bright children who are her pride and joy.

Sometimes her past still hurts: losing her mother early, growing up in foster care. But her husband, Simon, is always there. A successful surgeon, he’s the envy of every woman they’ve ever met. Flowers, gifts, trips to France: nothing is too good for his family.

Then Simon says another woman’s name. The way he lingers on it, Caroline , gives Marianne a shudder of suspicion, but she knows it’s nothing – she can’t entertain this flash of paranoia.

In the old days, she’d have distracted herself by excelling at work, but Marianne left her glamorous career when she married. She’d speak to a friend, but she’s too busy with her children and besides, Simon doesn’t approve of the few she has left.

It’s almost by accident that Marianne starts to learn more about Caroline. But once started, she can’t stop, because what she finds makes her wonder: is the question she should be asking not ‘should she be jealous’, but… ‘should she be scared?’

My review

I have already read a romantic comedy by this author that I thoroughly enjoyed. I was pleasantly surprised that she decided to write an other genre as well. It made me very curious and I was soooooo not disappointed.

It’s one of those books where you know from the first paragraph that you will be under its spell. With every chapter it became harder and harder to put the book down.

Often it’s very difficult to use one word to sum up a story. Here is was actually very simple. ‘Perfect’ is the key word. Once you don’t meet this standard anymore, it can have some serious consequences.

Sorry, this will have to do. Did I make you curious? Well, mission accomplished in that case. That was what I was aming for. All you have to do now, is read this enthralling, fluently written, funny in a sarcastic way and utter mersmerizing story. 5 stars.

Thank you, Sue Watson, Bookouture and Netgalley.

About the author

Sue Watson was a journalist on women’s magazines and national newspapers before leaving it all behind for a career in TV. As a producer with the BBC she worked on garden makeovers, kitchen takeovers and daytime sofas – all the time making copious notes so that one day she might escape to the country and turn it all into a book.
After much deliberation and copious consumption of cake, Sue eventually left her life in TV to write.  After a very successful debut novel, Fat Girls and Fairy Cakes Sue signed a three book deal with Bookouture.
