A spy on a mission…Until he meets this heiress!

Miss Theodora Cranford’s learned to keep her impetuous nature locked away. She won’t be deceived by another man who can’t see past her fortune. She wants an honourable, sensible sort – not a self-assured scoundrel like her new neighbour, Lord Gray. Although she’s sure there’s more to him than meets the eye… But after that first captivating kiss, she’s certainly left wanting more!

I am happy to share this post with you about  A Spy, His Dog, An Heiress and A Bad Guy…

The Disgraceful Lord Gray is a Regency Romcom with a splash of romantic suspense and a dash of detective novel all rolled into one. Sounds like a complicated hotchpotch I know, but I’m delighted with the finished result.

My hero, the Lord Gray in the title, is a quick-witted, cheeky and mischevious rogue with a heart of pure gold, who just happens to be a spy. And not just any old spy. He is one of The King’s Elite. A highly trained and covert group of Regency spies who specialise in infiltrating and destroying dangerous smuggling gangs. For the past two years, they have been on the trail of one in particular. The Boss. The faceless, ruthless, callous mastermind behind a gang so toxic, they threaten the safety of England and its economy. It is he which brings the King’s Elite to a sleepy corner of Suffolk in the midst of a long, hot summer.

Lord Gray’s book is the third book in the series- but like all my books, is a standalone story because I hate dangling threads. He had cropped up in two books before I wrote this one, and I had the sense of a charming man who didn’t take life beyond his demanding job too seriously. In this book, alongside his important mission for King and country- I gave him my dog Trevor as his sidekick, purely because so many readers love my dog on social media, they had asked me to put him in a book. That gave me tremendous scope to add some comedy to the story alongside the intrigue, especially when I also decided to include Gray’s curmudgeonly superior Lord Fennimore into the proceedings. Another reoccurring character from the series.

My heroine, Thea, is the perfect match for Gray. She’s an impetuous, no-nonsense, fiery and funny redhead who doesn’t suffer fools gladly, loathes fortune hunters and scoundrels and has an imagination as vivid as her hair. The banter between them is, in my humble opinion, some of the best I have ever written, and it was great fun to watch them try to fight the instantaneous and powerful attraction which simmers between them from the moment they meet.

And what a first meeting it is! Well, I had to do something to make the heroine think he was disgraceful- and what better way than for her to stumble across him as naked as the day he was born, skinny dipping in her uncle’s brook on the hottest day of the year?

I won’t tell you anything else about what happens, as that will only spoil the story, suffice to say there is much more to The Disgraceful Lord Gray than Thea inadvertently sees in that crystal clear water, and his appearance and his mission turns her quiet, dull and predicable life in the country completely upside down.

Thank you, Virginia Heath and Rachel’s Random Resources.

About the author

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Fortunately, the lovely people at Harlequin Mills & Boon took pity on her and decided to publish her romances, but it still takes her forever to fall asleep.
