When and where do you prefer to write?
Even though I hate getting out of bed, and ordinarily I’d say I’m not a morning person, I write some of my best work after I have exercised early and eaten healthily at home. I think the exercise kicks my brain into gear and gets the ‘juices flowing’. If I don’t exercise, I have a tendency to procrastinate and float around the house, watch trashy TV in my pyjamas, eat an entire packet of biscuits in one sitting, while stroking my cat. It’s not a pretty sight. Trust me.
Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?
Tea all the way. I don’t think I could survive without caffeine. If I don’t have at least four cups a day, I get all grumpy and tired… and no one wants to see that. Plus the ritual of putting the kettle on, forces me to move away from my desk. Otherwise, I’d sit in the same position all day and my hands would probably turn into writing claws. As far as food goes, I’m plant based, so everything meat free, but I’m also a chocaholic. There’s this chocolate bar in the UK called Vego (it’s vegan) and it’s honestly the tastiest thing ever…but is super calorific! So I have to ration a piece, otherwise I could gobble the whole thing in one sitting.
What is your favourite book?
Hmmm, that’s difficult because I don’t have one favourite book. I have several, for different reasons. My favourite classic book would be Alice in Wonderland. My mum used to read this to me as a child, and I loved the pure escapism and absurdism flowing through the pages. I feel strongly that this book helped to spark my wild imagination from an early age. My favourite book series as an adult is His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, and more specifically, The Subtle Knife. As an author, I’m in awe of Pullman’s ability to write beautiful prose. There’s a sort of rhythm to his writing that is kind of mind blowing – I honestly don’t know how he does it. That’s one thing I find myself obsessing over when I’m writing, and I’ll end up staring at a page for an hour because the sentence doesn’t feel right. Then, my other favourite series is Hunger Games. I’ve read that series so many times and I’m such a fan-girl of the books and the movies. If I was ever stranded on a desert island, I’d want the Hunger Games in my bag.
Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?
I will always write the kind of books that I like to read, and I have quite a broad taste in fiction. I think I’ll always have a tendency to lean towards YA fiction in general, because I love the escapism of YA. But I could see myself writing in various sub genres in YA like paranormal romance. I’m also a huge fan a monster horror, especially in film, so I’d like to have a crack at writing a pure horror book at some point.
Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
Absolutely. Friends / Family – if you’re reading this, you have been warned! The main protagonist in Kill or Cure, is largely based on me as a teenager (which is quite a while ago now
*ahem*) And the main love interest, Will, is very much based on my husband, especially his sense of humour. I’m not necessarily influenced by looks, it’s usually personality and character traits in general.
Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
No, because that would be way too organised and I’m pretty chaotic. When I was travelling in Australia earlier this year, I was sat in a national park listening to music and randomly had an idea for my next series. I had to scrabble around in a frenzied whirlwind and find my iPad to write my ideas down.
Which genre do you not like at all?
I’d probably avoid clean romance and historical fiction. But to be honest, if the writing is good and the story is compelling, I’ll give anything a go. I actually have quite a short attention span with books these days, because I’m so busy running my author business. The book has to keep me gripped with lots of well-placed cliff hangers; otherwise I’ll end up putting the book down and never picking it up again.
If you had the chance to co-write a book, whom would it be with?
I’m actually in the early stages of planning a co-written book with a very talented author buddy of mine. He’s actually super successful with an established writing career (the guy has just been nominated for an Emmy!), so I’m not quite sure why he wants to work with me! But he like’s my writing style and we have a great relationship filled with excellent banter. I’m hoping it will lead to great things, so watch this space on that one.
If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
I’m very fortunate to have travelled a lot in the past, but next on my hit list would be either Japan or Brazil. I love the idea of travelling to Japan to see all the craziness of Tokyo, mixed with the rich culture and ancient history. But I’d also love to go carnival in Brazil too – it’s like the party to end all parties!! Hopefully sometime soon I’ll find the time and money to get to these places
