An impossible choice:

His family or love

As steward to the Earl of Borwyn, Erik Ward had only admired sheltered noblewoman Linota Leofric from afar – until he has to escort her on a dangerous journey. Q&A

  1. Which character would you like to be in this book?

I do have a bit of a thing for the hero of The Warrior’s Innocent Captive. His name is Erik Ward and he’s had a hard life. He doesn’t expect love and respect but he sure goes out of his way to earn it. Also, he’s very handsome! In light of all that, I would like to be the heroine because she gets to kiss him; just don’t tell my husband!

  1. Do you always take a book/ereader wherever you go?

Yes I do! Before e-readers were a thing I would take a book everywhere. It was especially useful when my husband used to drag me around a DIY store. Now that I can download an ebook onto my phone, I can use a smaller bag!

  1. Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Good question! I’m pretty well-behaved in real life. I can’t find it within myself to ever break the rules, so I think I’d like to be the ‘bad one’ in fiction. That way I can be naughty without having to break into a sweat at the thought that I’ve really done something wrong.

  1. Do you prefer to read/write standalones or series?

I love to read both. I love reading a series so that you can immerse yourself in a world for several books and can keep returning to familiar characters. As for writing, it’s much easier to create a standalone book than a series. You have to make sure lots of different people stay in character all the time over several books. Sometimes, you can write yourself into a corner that’s quite difficult to get out of three books down the line. It can be very fiddly but it is ultimately very rewarding, especially when you see the series on your bookshelf!

  1. Where can I find you when you are reading?

Absolutely anywhere. I don’t have a special place for reading and will walk around the house reading, if I’m really into a novel. I’m pretending to do housework, but I don’t think I am fooling anyone. Now that you’ve mentioned it though, I love the idea of having a special reading spot.

  1. Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

Playing board games with my children or dragging them on long walks they really don’t want to go on. Either that or I’m at work.

  1. Can you walk past a bookstore without going inside?

Never. Even if I don’t have time to browse the books, I just love the smell and the sense of peace you get from standing in a bookshop.

  1. What are you most proud of?

My children. They’re happy and healthy and I think that’s all you can ask for as a parent.

  1. What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

Pride, relief, joy and excitement.

  1. What piece of advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Persevere and, if you write romantic fiction, join the Romantic Novelists’ Association.

About the author

Ella Matthews lives and works in beautiful South Wales. When not thinking about handsome heroes she can be found walking along the coast with her husband and their two children (probably still thinking about heroes but at least pretending to be interested in everyone else).
