Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

I tend to write a lot in the early hours of the morning at my kitchen table when I can’t sleep. I find I do my best writing in that time when it’s no longer night but not quite morning yet. I also like writing in subway stations. I don’t know why though.

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

I do. I can’t write while listening to music like a lot of other authors do. I need a low hum of activity in the background. But that’s it

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

I would love to write something with Billy Childish. His poetry, music and prose has been inspirational to me for a long time. All the other authors I would have liked to co-write with are sadly dead.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Definitely the bad one. I’m the kind of person who always wants the bad guys to succeed in movies or tv dramas. Bad guys are always much more interesting as characters.

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

Would have loved to interview Charles Bukowski or Raymond Carver. Those dirty realism writers that drank too much and felt too much. Interview them while taking shots. Would’ve been fun.

Where can I find you when you are reading?

I’m someone that carries my kindle and a paperback with me everywhere I go because I commute an hour to work everyday. I appreciate that commute time for writing and reading.

Where can I find you wen you are not writing/reading?

My hobby is traveling (before corona anyhow) so maybe on a beach somewhere or an Asian marketplace. Also love boxing so I spent a few hours a week hitting bags in the gym.

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

It’s hard to explain. You spend so much time thinking about it, dreaming about it. When it finally arrives it’s too much to comprehend. Anyone that gets to that point has achieved so much.

How do you come up with a title for your book?

A lot of my titles have come from poetry I’ve written or from within the novel itself.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

I usually have an idea for the cover while I’m writing the novel. Something from the overall atmosphere of the piece usually gives me an image and then I mix it with something that inspires me from old pulp novels.

Thank you, Stephen J. Golds
