Olaf’s Saga, Book 2

AD 968. It has been ten summers since the noble sons of the North, Olaf and Torgil, were driven from their homeland by the treachery of the Norse king, Harald Eriksson. Having then escaped the horrors of slavery in Estland, they now fight among the Rus in the company of Olaf’s uncle, Sigurd.

It will be some of the bloodiest years in Rus history. The Grand Prince, Sviatoslav, is hungry for land, riches, and power, but his unending campaigns are leaving the corpses of thousands in their wakes. From the siege of Konugard to the battlefields of ancient Bulgaria, Olaf and Torgil struggle to stay alive in Sigurd’s Swords, the riveting sequel to Forged by Iron.

Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

My favourite place to write is in a cozy chair in a clean, quite house. Feet up. Laptop on my lap. No distractions. Nothing on the calendar for hours. A cup of coffee nearby.

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

Absolutely. I usually need hours of peace and quiet, which is hard to find in a busy household. Thankfully, my wife is understanding and allows me to carve out valuable chunks of time throughout the week.

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

It’s hard to narrow it down to one, but I think Bernard Cornwell would be the winner.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Oh, the bad one. Unless the good one is borderline bad. J

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

That’s another tough question to boil down to one. I think I would start with Jesus.

Where can I find you when you are reading?

Usually in bed, at night.

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

During the week, at my desk, working. Sadly, I still have a day job. During the weekend, at the beach, walking my dog. In the winter, you can sometimes find my on skis in the mountains.

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

God, I hope I squashed all of the errors and that people enjoy this! Followed shortly by, wow, I made this!

How do you come up with a title for your book?

Most often, the name jumps out at me when I am writing. With my first series – Hakon’s Saga – that was the case. The first book in Olaf’s Saga was a little more challenging, but the upcoming book’s title – Sigurd’s Swords — jumped out at me again.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

I think and write very visually. When I write, I usually have a picture or scene in my mind that I am describing. The same goes for my covers. I then either search for something online that meets that vision or contract with a talented artist who can bring that vision to life. The person who formats and ties it all together I have worked with for more than 20 years, so he and I are usually on the same page (no pun intended) when it comes to finalizing a design. In my latest series, Andrew Dodor from the Ukraine is the amazing artist who captured my vision on the cover and David Brzozowski from BlueSpark Studios in Los Angeles is the designer who put it all together as an actual cover.
