The Queen of Second Chances by D.M. Barr / #Interview #BlogTour @ProvidenceBks @authordmbarr

Carra’s memoir-writing class teaches seniors to resolve the regrets of their past. But to win over elder attorney Jay, will she follow her own advice? Carraway (Carra) Quinn is a free-spirited English major confronting an unreceptive job market. Desperate for cash, she reluctantly agrees to her realtor stepmother’s marketing scheme: infiltrate a local senior center as a recreational aide, ingratiate herself with the members, and convince them to sell their homes. Jay Prentiss is a straitlaced, overprotective elder attorney whose beloved but mentally fragile Nana attends that center. More creative than mercenary, Carra convinces Jay to finance innovations to the Center’s antiquated programming. Her ingenuity injects new enthusiasm among the seniors, inspiring them to confront and reverse the regrets of their past. An unlikely romance develops. But when Carra’s memoir-writing class prompts Jay’s Nana to skip town in search of a lost love, the two take off on a cross-country, soul-searching chase that will either deepen their relationship or tear them apart forever.

Which character would you like to be in this book?

Carra is such an interesting character, and she does good…I expect I always insert a bit of myself into every lead character I write, so I choose her.

Do you always take a book/reader wherever you go?

I use the Kindle app in my cell so yes, I take hundreds of books wherever I go.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the good one or the bad one?

I’ve actually had this happen twice. My friend Chris Grabenstein used my name in one of his young adult novels—I believe I was a reporter, which he did since I used to be a reporter—and then another friend, Marshall Karp, turned me into a sexy police officer in one of his Lomax and Biggs police procedurals. It should go without saying that you should go out and buy all of their novels since they’re so brilliant in their character naming!

Do you prefer to read/write standalones or series?

Up to now, I’ve only written standalones. I prefer them because I come up with plots that might not work with the characters I’ve already created and in a sense, when I’m done with a character, I’m done. The Queen of Second Chances will be my first series, but I will be giving each of the secondary characters their own stories so it’s not like a series where you take the same characters into different adventures. Having said all that, my next book, Simple Tryst of Fate, will be a series using the same characters each time. It will obviously be a departure for me.

Where can I find you when you are reading?

I’m usually in bed or on my family room couch, trying to ignore my husband blaring the television and sneaking some chocolate.

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

Walking my dog on the suburban streets of New York’s Hudson Valley, in the kitchen eating, or playing competitive trivia with the Penguins. Or maybe at a book conference.

Can you walk past a bookstore without going inside?

I love bookstores but because of my eyesight, I read everything electronically now, so I don’t hit the bookstores as often as I used to or should.

What are you most proud of?

1. My children. (You thought I was going to say my books, didn’t you? Admit it!) They’re smart and funny and turned out to be good young people with good values.

2. The fact I haven’t yet killed my husband. Beat the odds there.

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

Did I finish all the ice cream? Would anyone notice if I snuck out for more?

Thank you, D.M. Barr and Partner In Crime Tours

About the author

D.M. Barr By day, a mild-mannered salesperson, wife, mother, rescuer of senior shelter dogs, competitive trivia player and author groupie, happily living just north of New York City. By night, an author of sex, suspense and satire. My background includes stints in travel marketing, travel journalism, meeting planning, public relations and real estate. I was, for a long and happy time, an award-winning magazine writer and editor. Then kids happened. And I needed to actually make money. Now they’re off doing whatever it is they do (of which I have no idea since they won’t friend me on Facebook) and I can spend my spare time weaving tales of debauchery and whatever else tickles my fancy. The main thing to remember about my work is that I am NOT one of my characters. For example, as a real estate broker, I’ve never played Bondage Bingo in one of my empty listings or offed anyone at my local diet clinic. And I haven’t run away from home in fear that my husband was planning to off me. But that’s
not to say that I haven’t wanted to…
