I Am Winter by Denise Brown / #Interview #BookTour @literallypr @DeniseBrownUK

When Summer’s best friend Cee dies from cardiac arrest after both girls have taken pills, the accusations on social media begin, but as the bullying intensifies, Summer grows closer to revealing the secret both families are harbouring.

When and where do you prefer to write?

Where—I write at my desk which is in my bedroom facing the wall. I have some post-it notes stuck on the wall with my favourite motivational quotes and often find myself staring at them while I’m thinking (well, at them or my Jack Skellington folder). When—I write best in the mornings. Because I’m also a ghost writer, my laptop is usually switched on by 7.30am and stays on until the evening although I never write for longer than 45 minutes without a break. Oh, and in the middle of the night. All the best ideas are lurking when I should be asleep.

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

Yes! I think this is because I love to listen to music so if there’s anything playing in the background I’m too easily distracted and end up singing along, or even dancing at my desk.

What is your favourite and least favourite genre?

My favourite genre has to be thrillers. I like to be surprised by something a character does. I love it when a book makes me feel so tense that it stays with me long after I’ve finished reading, and I have to say that some YA thrillers I’ve read are among the best. Least favourite genre is sci-fi. Trying to work out why, I think it’s because I prefer to focus on the characters rather than the world-building. My own writing always begins with a character in my head rather than an event.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Oh, the baddie please! I’ve always fancied myself as a bit of a witch.

Where can I find you when you are reading?

In bed snuggled up with my dog, a black cocker spaniel called Lion—he’s not a lion he’s an absolute baby. I read every night in bed no matter how late it is or where I am. I’m one of those people who gets excited for bedtime when I’m reading a book that I’m loving to bits.

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

Walking Lion. I’m lucky enough to live in a beautiful area by the water with lots of woodland and the most amazing views. At the end of my street is a castle—an actual Scottish castle—and across the road is a marina, so yes, I love getting out with the dog and thinking. Plus, it gets me away from my laptop.

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

Ask me again on 11 November! I think I’m probably going to cry, but mostly I’ll be thinking that I finally did it! I didn’t give up, I persevered, and it came true. I’ll also be wishing that my dad was here to see it—it’s because of him that I love books as much as I do.

How do you come up with a title for your book?

Well, I am Winter went through several titles before settling on this one. The original working title was Bear-Dog, so you can see it went through quite a transformation. Acquaintances of mine in the publishing industry put their heads together and tried to come up with a title that was a play on the main character’s name Summer, and I’m so glad they did, because it’s perfect.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

Anne Glenn designed the cover for I am Winter and honestly, I’m completely in awe of how striking it is.

What is the title of the next book on your to read pile?

Margot and Me by Juno Dawson, which I’m so excited about. I’ve not read anything by this author before, but I’ve heard so many good things, I can’t wait!

Thank you, Denise Brown and Literally PR
