The Lure of a Man with a Baby

We’ve all seen the upsurge in photos of bard-chested men with kittens, puppies or… yes … babies. Scientific research has proven that most women tend to be attracted to men who interact well with children and babies.

But I think I knew that, anyway.

I remember sitting outside a café in France, a few years ago, when a little toddler appeared. It was just dawning on her she’d lost her family, and her face was beginning to crumple in panic. Of course, she wasn’t really lost, she’d just wandered a few metres away from the table where her family was sitting but she was so small, she couldn’t see them. Moments later, her daddy sauntered over with a big, adoring smile on his face. He scooped her up into his arms, and kissed her cheek tenderly, before strolling back to their table. In that moment, I fell in love.

Of course, it was unrequited and he was someone else’s partner, but I’ve never forgotten the power of that moment.

In Toni’s Blind Date, I wanted to pursue the importance of the family unit more than I had my other rom-coms. Toni’s story begins with the joy of discovering she’s pregnant, followed by the misery of miscarriage and the breakdown of what she had assumed to be the ideal relationship. Licking her wounds, she goes to stay with her father to try and recalibrate her life. From a broken home herself, her ambition is to build a settled, family life. As she says:

‘Why are people so intent on making a success of their careers and not prepared to put the same effort into their family? I know the pay isn’t great, there’s no company car or fancy health clubs, but aren’t there rewards to be had from nurturing children and building a little mini company you can call Family?’

When circumstances beyond her control force her to participate in a dating show, the audience picks her to date the equally reluctant Will – a single dad with a three year old son, and the love story really begins.

I was lucky. I had a wonderful dad and I adored him but, even at an early age, I knew he wasn’t text-book handsome. I’d watched enough Hollywood movies with my mum, to know that heroes were tall, dark and lantern-jawed with broad shoulders. I was under no illusions: my dad was average build, wore glasses and was a touch on the skinny side. So I asked my mum why she’d married him. Her answer was the best: ‘Because he was kind, and I knew he’d make a lovely daddy for my children.

’

My own hero at home came with a three-year old child. I’m not saying it was an easy relationship to navigate but I knew he took his responsibilities seriously and that made a difference.

So, Toni falls in love with Will and his little boy, and I can understand why.

Rosie writes romantic fiction with a sense of humour and, sometimes, a sense of the ridiculous; because we all know life and love aren’t exactly how we’d like them to be.

She has won a Readers’ Choice Award from Ancient City Romance Authors (part of Romance Writers of America) and been a finalist in the 2017 Maggie Awards for Excellence.

Before writing novels, Rosie wrote training courses and marketing copy for the corporate world – a far cry from teaching Art and Pottery, where her career began.

She lives on the Isle of Wight, within sight and sound of the sea, with her partner and her dog.
