Hope and Sanctuary by Neet Neilson / #Extract #BlogTour @zooloosBT @NeetNeilson @darkedgepress

Hope rescues intensive farming animals from slaughter among many others in her growing animal sanctuary, but finds herself struggling to make ends meet. Compounded by frequent flooding, a constant drain on her resources, as well as the risk it poses to her animals, Hope puts out a desperate plea on national television for help. Grant Marshall comes to her rescue, but there’s a catch. He’s a farmer – and Hope loathes farmers. Grant offers Hope everything she could ever desire for her sanctuary, leaving her with a dilemma – does she go against her morals and beliefs to accept his charity or will she accept his challenge that he can convince her that he is a compassionate man – in more ways than one?

Hope’s eyes were streaming as the wind and rain lashed her face.

‘I’m coming, Heidi. I’m coming, baby,’ she shouted, wading through waist-high cold water to reach the bleating goat perched on top of the bench. ‘I’ve got you, baby. There. Let’s get you to the barn with the others.’ She lifted the pygmy goat securely into her arms as the gale-force winds pushed her forward.

Hope carefully paced her footing as she traced her way towards the lit barns standing out like beacons against the pitch dark. Back on dry ground she put the shaking animal with the other three goats. They all huddled together and bleated their happiness at being reunited. Hope looked around the noisy barn, each section crammed full with cows, pigs, goats and ponies. ‘It’s alright guys. It’ll be over soon.’

I hope.

Thank heavens the hen coops were above the water line. Or I’d have nowhere to fit them in.

Exhausted she fought the wind the short distance to her on-site caravan. It was warm there. She stripped off her wet clothes and wrapped her fleecy dressing gown around her. She flopped onto her bed, beside her menagerie of dogs and two cats, and cried. Her four chihuahuas jumped all over her, licking her face, and her blind lab nudged tightly against her. They could sense her despair.

‘I don’t know how I’m going to keep doing this, you guys. I’d never forgive myself if any of you died in these floods.’ Hope let her tears fall into the fur of the nearest chihuahua. ‘The donations just aren’t enough to fix the river.’
