Q&A
When and where do you prefer to write?
I quite like sitting on the bed in the morning, when the house is still quiet, with a brew and a good selection of biscuits. I write whenever and where ever I can—when I can fit it in.
Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?
It helps though it’s not compulsory. I can write when the TV is on if it’s not at six-hundred decibels. I can write with people in the room if they politely ignore me. For some reason, I can’t write listening to music though.
If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
Currently, it’s Sally Rooney. I love her narration of normal life, her observation of normal relationships, and the way she writes with such skill and clarity. Though Matt Haig is one of my heroes so I’d love to share some of his philosophical-fictional creativity. Then (random horse in the running here) Brian Cox, because I’m a science geek.
Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?
I do love a good antagonist/anti-hero and I know the exciting answer would be: ‘Oh, the bad one. To wreak havoc and get away with lots of shocking things.’ But, in reality, it’d have to be the good one. I worry about perception and upsetting and I’d whittle myself silly thinking the bad things would be projected on me. Yeah, boring, but hey!
Who would you like/have liked to interview?
I’d like a small interview party (with buckets of crisps and wine). The late Stieg Larsson—because he created Lisbeth Salander who’s my favourite female protagonist ever. A DEP author called Ann—because I read her book and watched an interview on YouTube and she seems great. Then a few random people from the supermarket—because the most interesting things are often discovered in the most unexpected places.
Where can I find you when you are reading?
If I’m into a book, anywhere—stirring gravy at the hob, walking to the carpark after work…. Though generally in bed, fuelling the insomnia with a backlit screen or straining my eyes using the most pathetic reading light known to man.
Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?
Generally, pottering around the lab at work or within ten-feet of the washing machine! In my spare time, walking somewhere quiet, preferably in the hills, whatever the weather. Or in the kitchen disco when I’m feeling energetic.
What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?
Initially, disbelief. I wrote this book years ago and it’s languished, homeless, ever since. I didn’t know where it would end up, but I never thought it would be published. Then happy, happy, happy….
How do you come up with a title for your book?
I basically plead with people for ideas. Like, properly plead. Book titles are a flipping nightmare. Only once have I decided on a title before writing a book and I knew it was a sign I’d never finish it.
How do you pick a cover for your book?
It starts with a story concept, followed by a genre thumbnail search on Amazon, then a browse through stock photography. I was lucky enough to be shown a proof by the cover designer for The Catcher, who nailed it really quickly.
Thank you
