The Island of Lost Secrets by Rebecca Alexander / #SpotlightPost #PublicationDay @bookouture

As Ellie stood on the boat, watching the small island come into view, she wondered what awaited her on shore. What secrets would she uncover in this place?

When Ellie Roberts inherits a cottage on a remote Scilly Isle, she’s shocked. She’s never heard of the previous owner, Patience Ellis, so why did she leave Ellie her legacy?

Overwhelmed with unanswered questions, Ellie travels to the isolated island. Windswept from the boat, salt spray still on her skin, she searches for Patience’s whitewashed cottage, hidden behind overgrown ivy. But when she steps inside, the house feels strangely familiar, and she has a memory of laughing as a child with her beloved mother in the window seat overlooking the sea… The mother she lost when she was only a child.

Determined to find out more, Ellie meets enigmatic local Branok Shore. While at first he seems uninterested, he believes he can help. Charmed by his green eyes, and curious about his past on the island, he and Ellie grow closer, but Ellie knows she needs to understand her own story before she can embrace the future. And when Branok prises open Patience’s dresser, filled with letters from the Second World War, Ellie discovers the shocking secret Patience was forced to hide – and the truth that will change her own life forever.

The letters tell the story of a brutal storm on a dark night in the depths of war, and of an injured soldier who begged Patience for help, and asked her to make an impossible choice…

But the letters don’t hold the answers Ellie so desperately needs. Why did Patience leave her home to her? And how can Ellie have memories of the cottage, when she’s never been there before? When Ellie finally uncovers the truth, will she be strong enough to put the fragments of her life back together?

About the Author

I write crime and fantasy, with an interest in folk and superstitious beliefs. A Baby’s Bones (out in 2018) asks the reader: is a dark house haunted by the dreadful violence committed there in the past, or is there a scientific explanation that triggers the darkness in the people who are working there?

I’m fascinated with the psychology that creates crime, how someone overcomes a lifetime of societal pressure not to harm someone. What kind of people find that possible (or, even, easy?). A Shroud of Leaves (out July 2019) asks that question, why a young girl would be buried in a pile of leaves on an estate that seems haunted by the disappearance of another young girl in the past. But she isn’t the first young person to go missing there… the story explores a family that seems haunted by psychopathy.

I’ve been interested in fantasy since being read my first fairy tale. When I started writing seriously, as part of an MA in creative writing, fantasy crept into what was going to be a crime story. It’s since crept into everything I’ve written – historical, mystery, romance. I think it’s because I keep finding references to magic everywhere. It’s our first belief system: a fat man will come down the chimney at Christmas, tooth fairies steal teeth and exchange them for money, black cats are lucky. When I was a psychologist, people came up with superstitions and beliefs that made no empirical sense yet made a good story. Living on the Isle of Wight then Devon I couldn’t get away from superstitions and our magical history.

I wrote The Secrets of Life and Death series out of that love of magic and fantasy. I tried to bring a single element of fantasy into the real world and it seeped in all directions. Dr John Dee believed sorcery was possible – it was his idea of technology. I just wondered … what if he was right? What if a child’s life could be saved by magic when medicine fails? Then I had to go back and follow Dee and his sidekick, Kelley, as they did their experiments and worked out how magic works in the castle of Elizabeth Bathory, the sadistic ‘Blood Countess’.

Review

I used to read the blurbs of every book before I decided to buy/read them. I stopped doing this a while ago. Why? There are several things to answer this question with. I sometimes find blurbs too revealing. I don’t want half the book told on the back cover. Sometimes I find it too confusing, so I left those on the shelf too.

There is one thing that works for me each and every time and that is the front cover. In the first place it’s the image that has to attract my attention. If that activates something in my brain, it’s a winner. I was never disappointed. If I loved the image, I loved the book. The title  is the second thing I look at. If the image and title are a match made in heaven, I am a happy camper and if the author is a favourite one I do a little happy dance. If the author is new to me, I do a happy dance too. 😊😉

So one look at this book and I was in. A church is often creepy, especially at night and when it’s surrounded by fields and nothingness. And the title ‘Silent Angel’… Well, that says enough. 😊

Last but not least the author. She created an amazing series with Morgan Brookes as one of the main characters and each part is a winner.

Morgan herself is a winner too. Saving victims, catching killers… those are two goals she has to achieve. Putting herself in danger? No problem as long as she can close a case with a positive outcome.

I love the closeness of the small police team. They all have each other’s back. There is one rotten apple though. I had the feeling and hope they would have adapted and fitted in now with the rest of them, but I sadly he does not see the light yet. 😉

Abduction and murder are central in this story, but love and friendship play a big part too.

Morgan Brookes is not a traditional police officer, but you just have to love her. She is great. 5 stars

Thank you

Christmas at Red Robin Cottage by Sue Roberts / #SpotlightPost #PublicationDay @bookouture @suerobertsautho

Snow is falling on Little Newdale; decorations are being hung and joy is in the air. But at Red Robin Cottage, Sarah is feeling far from merry and bright…

Since her marriage went up in flames like a Christmas pudding, there’s nothing Sarah Dunne wants more than a peaceful festive season filled with carols and mince pies. But Sarah’s teenage daughter Ellie is feeling the winter blues, faced with spending the holiday without her father.

Desperate to bring home some seasonal cheer and make this a Christmas to remember for Ellie, Sarah follows the trail of fairy lights into the snow-covered village. Among the holiday crowds she finds herself gazing into the soft brown eyes of a handsome stranger whose smile is startlingly familiar. It couldn’t really be her childhood sweetheart, Luke, could it?

Even though he moved half a world away nineteen years ago, as they bond over hot chocolate and tales of traumatic break-ups it’s clear time hasn’t changed Luke’s effortless charm. And when he saves Sarah from a wardrobe malfunction at a Christmas party, it’s not just the mulled wine warming her heart. But she can’t let herself fall in love again. Especially as Luke isn’t here to stay…

Then Ellie reveals she’s been keeping a BIG secret about Sarah’s ex. Reeling, Sarah longs to turn to Luke for comfort. But will that put her already fragile relationship with her daughter at risk, and chase Luke away even faster? Or will opening her heart mean Sarah gets her wish for a magical Christmas after all?

The Maid’s Secret by Shari J. Ryan / #SpotlightPost #PublicationDay @bookouture @sharijryan

Czechoslovakia, 1940: “We will always have our memories,” he says, as the soldiers pull him away. “You will survive this. You are braver than you know. Remember that, always.” This heartbreaking World War Two page-turner shows that love is more powerful than hatred, bravery can overcome evil, and hope is stronger than darkness.

In the middle of the night, while I am curled in Ben’s arms, there is a harsh knock on the door. My blood turns to ice. The love of my life is Jewish, and I am a Romany gypsy maid; every second that we exist in Hitler’s Europe, we are in danger. Every day, we have been huddling around a crackling radio, listening for news of this evil war. Every night, we have feared we won’t live till dawn.

The banging continues, and we leap out of bed. I can hardly breathe as I open the door, seeing Nazis standing before us. My heart cracks as the soldiers grab Ben. I’m powerless to stop them from shoving him into a wagon, bound for the place of no return.

The love of my life is now imprisoned in wire with thousands of other innocent inmates. For every moment he is trapped behind the gates of hell, he gets closer to death—surviving on scraps of food, and forced to work in gruelling conditions.

The soldiers haven’t arrested me yet, but it’s only a matter of time. I vow to stay alive for Ben, not to give up hope. I’ll stop at nothing to escape the enemy as they hunt me down.

With our fate in the hands of monsters, will we ever see each other again? And will our love for one another save us—or kill us?

Extract

The sun hung high and hot, shining across the Liffey. Through the open office window the sounds of traffic competed with the seagulls soaring above the quays, and on the pavement below pedestrians passed in an everchanging pattern, merging and separating.

Ben finished his sandwich and threw the crumpled wrapper into the wastepaper basket. He yawned and stretched out his legs beneath the desk. He ran a finger around his collar, trickles of sweat had already began to form despite the open windows in the office. Just a few more hours, he told himself and he’d be slipping into the driver seat and cranking up the air conditioning.

The lunchtime sounds of the city had almost lulled him to slumber when the phone in his pocket began to vibrate.

When her picture flashed up on the screen Ben grinned and warmth flooded through him. In his mind’s eye he saw her curled up on the couch in the living room, a book lying beside her. Had she woken from a noonday nap and just wanted a chat? Or did she need him to bring her something back from town? He was already mentally juggling meetings so he could nip out for a bit when he pressed answer. His “Well… what is it now?” was full of laughter. He waited for her answering laugh, eager for the sound of her voice.

But that was all gone now.

Afterwards everything happened with a swiftness that made the following moments seem almost dreamlike.

He managed to hail a taxi and as it pulled away he pulled out his phone and dialled. His call went straight to voicemail. He flung the phone onto the seat where it silently mocked him. Another glance at his watch told him that it was now ten minutes since he had heard anything and the taxi had travelled barely a half mile of the journey. His head was a torment of ever-changing scenarios. What was happening? Was he too late? Please God, don’t let him be too late.

“Can’t you speed up? Please?” He called through the partition.

The taxi driver helpfully pointed out they were in lunch time traffic.

Ben wiped his forehead with the sleeve of his shirt and looked out the window, the lanes were bumper to bumper, he watched a motorcycle courier weaving between cars and wished he was on the back. Even the pedestrians seemed to be making more headway. They were crossing O’Connell Bridge, crawling and stopping. The journey was taking too long. He should be there, he needed to be there by now. But the taxi was crawling, the meter the only thing moving. Crawl, stop, crawl, another red light.

Ben yanked open the door.

“Hey, man, what you doing? You can’t get out in the middle of the road,” the driver yelled.

Ben pulled twenty euros out of his pocket and thrust it at him. He leapt out, already running down Westmoreland Street as the cab drove past. The street was thronged, he pushed his way through the crowds, shirt tails streaming, arms and legs pumping. He urged his legs to work more efficiently as he navigated hordes of tourists and workers heading out for lunch on Dawson Street, just people going about their everyday activities whilst he raced past trying to stop time. He paused for a moment, bent over, lungs burning.

Then he was off again racing past Merrion Square until, at last, looming large and grey in front he saw the corner of Holles Street. He reached the edge of the pavement and with a cursory glance either way launched himself across the road, willing himself up the steps to the hospital and to her side.

He failed to see the van turning in from Mount Street or hear the sharp blast of the horn before he was flipped across the bonnet and came to rest on the pavement beside the steps to the hospital.

Thank you

A Death at Neptune Cove by Emma Jameson / #SpotlightPost #PublicationDay @bookouture @msemmajameson

Jemima Jago Mystery Book 4

A birthday beach party gone wrong, buried treasure and… a dead body? This might be Jemima Jago’s most baffling case yet!

When Jem knocks on the door of an isolated cottage overlooking beautiful Neptune Cove, she’s hoping for help fixing a birthday cake baking disaster. She’s not expecting to find the tenant dead on the tiled floor, specks of blood on the collar of his navy-and-red satin pajamas…

The victim is Arthur Ajax, a handsome and wealthy American businessman who arrived in the Isles of Scilly as a tourist ten months ago and never left. There have been rumors about him in town, as he was known for his extravagant lifestyle. Perhaps he’d gone overboard, or could his death be connected to an unpaid debt?

Later that same evening, Jem stumbles across a hoard of buried jewelry, dug up from the dunes by little dog Buck, and she immediately wonders if they could be connected to the rich man’s murder. It’s not every day you find expensive—and very real-looking—sapphire earrings stashed away in an antique biscuit tin!

Jem seeks help from a local jewelry expert to identify the gems. But when he suddenly goes missing, Jem knows someone is trying to cover their tracks. Can she catch the killer before he makes her walk the plank too?

The Wallace House of Pain by S.M. Stevens / #Spotlight @SMStevens17

“Have you ever talked to your dad about your mother’s death?” Charley asked.

Xander shifted to face Charley. “What’s that got to do with anything?”

Charley shrugged. “It seems like maybe you have to deal with the elephant in the room before you can move on to other things.”

Xander’s blue eyes studied her for so long she dropped her eyes momentarily.

“We’ve had years in which to talk about it so it’s reasonably safe to assume no one wants to. He’s never asked how I felt. Not once.”

This time, he looked away from her steady gaze.

“I don’t think you’re desperate for your father’s approval. I think you’re desperate for his love. I feel guilty because I’m not sure I loved my parents enough when they were here. And I feel sad because I’m not sure they loved me enough.”

“You have to stop concerning yourself with that. What we have has to be enough.”

“I know. But what if you don’t know how much you have? And you can still find out?”

The Wallace House of Pain is a portrait of troubled family relations, modern social justice issues and deeply personal choices.

Activist Xander Wallace and his straitlaced father do not have an easy relationship. Jim’s views on race, immigration, gender, sexuality and even millennials alienate his son no matter how hard Xander tries to find common ground. Toss in Jim’s second marriage ten months after Xander’s mother died and it’s a volatile cocktail. How, against this backdrop, will Xander dare to bare his soul and reveal his greatest secret?

Social justice issues have touched the life of every American in some way over the past few years. The Wallace House of Pain explores the differences in generational attitudes toward these social justice issues, in parallel with exploring a difficult father-son relationship. The novelette delves into that age-old question: Can two people meet in the middle without sacrificing their own beliefs and convictions?

As a novelette, it is longer than a short story and shorter than a novella.

About the author

Stevens began writing fiction during back-to-back health crises: a shattered pelvis and ovarian cancer. Her books include the novelette The Wallace House of Pain, full-length novel Horseshoes and Hand Grenades (both Contemporary Adult Fiction), Shannon’s Odyssey (Middle Grade), and the Bit Players series (Young Adult) for musical theatre-loving teens. Her forthcoming novel, Beautiful and Terrible Things, addresses social justice issues and will be published by TouchPoint Press in early 2023. When not writing fiction, she provides marketing and PR for solar energy companies.

Beautiful and Terrible Things features the same cast of characters as The Wallace House of Pain. The novelette presents one of the key story lines cut from the full novel for length reasons. So if you like the characters, you can spend more time with them when the full novel is released.

Thief by Owen Mullen / #Review #BlogTour @rararesources @owenmullen6

Glass Family #4

It takes a thief to catch a thief…

Charley Glass arrived in her family’s lives like the hurricane she’d escaped. But she hadn’t run far enough: the ruthless Giordano family are on her tail and want two things – her life, and the return of the property she stole from them. No matter how many bodies stack up.

After years of longing, Charley finally has the family she’s always wanted, but now she’s going to have to tell them the real reason she came looking them. There is only one way she’s going to stay alive, and that is to employ the muscle of the notorious Glass Family.

The head of the family, Luke, has become embroiled in a dangerous political plot and isn’t sure they’re strong enough to take on one of New Orleans’ biggest crime gangs. But he’d put his life on the line to protect the empire they’ve built – even if they’ll have to take on an enemy hurting enough to cross an ocean for revenge.

Review

The Glass family… I did not know them yet, because I have not read the previous instalments.

I was introduced to Luke and his two sisters Nina and Charley, but they are not the only recurrent characters. There were a few more I had to learn about and then of course there were new ones. So in the beginning I had my work cut out for me. A lot of people I had to make connections with.

It was not simple and a bit of a struggle at the start, but that’s of course my own fault. 😉 I am not the most patient person in the world, but when I set my mind to it, I push through. And patience brings great rewards. This time I was rewarded with a great story. 😊

Honour, power and the family name… those are three of the elements that are very important in this book. There are more, of course. Betrayal, fidelity, revenge are added to the mix and baked into this amazing book.

As I already said there were a lot of characters. If I have to pick one that was my favourite, I cannot do that. I must choose two: George and Felix.

In my opinion George is the most intelligent one and Felix maybe does not always make the right decisions, but he does it with the best intentions.

Family and friends… People you should always be able to trust and count on, but sometimes they are your worst nightmare.

Enemies…You should never trust them and always keep an eye out for them, because they might surprise you. But there are two kinds of surprises. Sometimes it are bad ones, sometimes they are good.

I enjoyed reading this book. 4,5 stars

Thank you

Brushstrokes from the Past by Heidi Eljarbo / #SpotlightPost #BookTour @cathiedunn @HeidiEljarbo

WWII and the mid-seventeenth century are entwined in this fourth dual timeline novel about Nazi art theft, bravery, friendship, and romance.

April 1945. Art historian Soli Hansen and her friend Heddy arrive at an excavation site only to find Soli’s old archeology professor deeply engrossed in an extraordinary find in a marsh. The remains of a man have lain undisturbed for three centuries, but there’s more to this discovery…

As Soli tries to understand who the baroque man was and discovers what he carried in a sealed wooden tube, problems arise. A leak reveals the finds to the notorious Lieutenant Colonel Heinz Walter, and soon, both Nazi elite and the Gestapo are after the treasure.
When Heddy and the professor disappear along with the artwork, Soli and her resistance group must find them before it’s too late.

1641. In Amsterdam, French musketeer Claude Beaulieu has had his portrait done by his close friend and artist Rembrandt van Rijn. When a band of thieves steal the precious painting, Claude and his wife Annarosa Ruber pick up their swords and a few belongings and go after the culprits.

Set in Norway during the tumultuous last days of the second world war, as well as the peak of the glorious baroque art period, these two stories are a must for readers who love historical fiction with adventure, suspense, and true love that conquers all.
