Scarlett Wynn’s tragic childhood taught her that life can be cruel to women with little power. So when a local seamstress disappears, Scarlett vows to find out why. Armed with a weapon and her courage, Scarlett scours London for clues–and crosses the unlikely path of Ambrose Cross, the Duke of Aylesford, at an unlikely place: an upscale brothel. The Duke is trying to solve a mystery of his own, and Scarlett is sure they can help each other–if she can resist the attraction that draws them together…
As Duke of Aylesford, Ambrose is duty-bound to protect his family name from scandal no matter the cost. But Scarlett’s fearless spirit forces him to look beyond his world of privilege. Scarlett is as intoxicating as she is dangerous, igniting a fire in him like no other. When the pair learn both mysteries they’re trying to solve are tied to a string of missing women, the tangled scheme they uncover may put their lives, and their growing love, in mortal danger–and lead them to search their hearts like never before…
– When and where do you prefer to write?
I prefer to write in the morning when I’m least distracted and my mind is freshest, although I’ve learned to adapt in many ways. Along with being an author, I’m a fulltime teacher, wife and mother, so I’m usually pulled in several directions. I try to balance everything and get the edge on my day by getting up early before the house gets busy.
I like to write in my comfy little office because I enjoy absolute quiet, but I’ve also learned to block out television and other noises if I’m writing at the kitchen table.
– Do you have a certain ritual?
I wish I had a ritual. A few of my author friends have strict writing schedules that make meeting their word count easier, but I’m not able to do that right now. My life is still too unpredictable. I write whenever I can steal time. I will say though that while I may not be able to sit in front of my computer whenever I want, I’m always thinking about my story.
– Is there a drink or some food that keeps you company while you write?
Coffee! I love flavoured coffee. French vanilla is my favourite. I enjoy sweets, so cookies are a natural go-to with my coffee but I have to be careful otherwise I’ll eat the entire package as I’m writing.
– What is your favourite book?
Of all time? That’s a seriously difficult question. My favourite historical romance is Mine Till Midnight by the amazing Lisa Kleypas. The relationship between the hero and heroine is incredibly romantic. I don’t think any story will ever match that one for me.
– Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?
I think exploring another genre would be exciting. I’m a pantser so I honestly don’t know what I’m going to write until I begin. Considering that, if I was inspired to write something totally different than Regency romance, I would be open to it. All it takes is the right idea. I’ve written entire stories around a bit of dialog or scene.
– Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
What a fun question! I think all my characters contain qualities from people in my life, both good and bad. It might not always be intentional but I think it comes through anyway. That said, I’ve never specifically written a character as a depiction of a person I know in real life.
– Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
Ha! I have notebooks everywhere! Every room of my house, in my purse and car, and whenever I don’t have paper handy, I’ve typed into my phone, called someone to write something down (if I’m driving), written on scraps and restaurant napkins and emailed myself. Nothing is too extreme to safeguard against losing an idea.
– Which genre do you not like at all?
One genre I’ve never read is paranormal – simply because I’m a total chicken and I know I can’t handle scary things lurking around my imagination. I’ll never sleep at night.
– If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
Wow, I admire so many authors. If my wish was granted and I had the chance to co-write with another romance author, I’d pick either Lisa Kleypas or Sherry Thomas. Both of these extraordinarily talented ladies write with deep heartfelt emotion and masterful command of prose. I’d be so in awe and at the same time hoping to learn from each of them.
– If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
I’ve travelled to England and toured castles and famous historical sites, but that was many years ago. I’d love to return and look at everything with fresh eyes. Since I write about Regency era London, I would enjoy gaining a new perspective by another visit and not relying on research to take me there.
