Contempt by Michael Cordell / #Review @TCKPublishing

Lawyer Thane Banning has just been released from prison after serving five years for a murder he didn’t commit.

A free man due only to a legal technicality, Thane must clear his name, repair his fragile marriage, and rebuild the life he once cherished. But his efforts are complicated by death threats from the father of his alleged victim and the tidal wave of public outrage at his release.

As Thane begins to find footing in the free world, a former fellow inmate is accused of murder by the same DA who put Thane behind bars. The inmate reaches out to Thane, who is unable to resist the desperate plea for help. He takes the case, thereby pitting himself against the ruthless adversary who stole five years of his life. And this adversary has a grudge to settle.

But prison has taught Thane a thing or two about survival, and the last time he played by the rules, he landed on death row. This time he’s staking it all – his marriage, his reputation, and even his life – on the outcome of the impending case. Thane is determined to do whatever it takes to uncover the truth, especially when startling links to his own conviction rise to the surface. But will he uncover the truth in time?

Review

This was a great book! The author certainly had me fooled more than once and I loved it.

A lawyer often specializes in a certain domain in order to help his clients in the best possible way, but a good lawyer, should he not be able to take on any case and make it a success?

That’s how Thane sees it too when a friend reaches out to him. He dives into the case with the determination of a pit bull, deciding to not let go before he has found out the truth. The consequences? Well, that is something he will deal with afterwards. He has to see this through before he can pick up where he left off 5 years ago.

Is it about revenge? Yes. Is it about justice? Yes. Is he taking risks? Yes. Will he uncover the truth? Yes!

I loved the way Thane presented the case. With every page I turned, my mouth started to fall open further and further and when everything was revealed, I could not believe my eyes. Never in a million years would I have seen this coming!

Shockingly good story. 5 stars

Thank you, Michael Cordell and TCK Punlishing

Her Guilty Secret by Emily Cavanagh / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @emilymcavanagh

:

“Let’s play truth or dare, for old times’ sake…”

I reluctantly agree, silently praying none of my three oldest friends gets the chance to ask me a truth. There is so much I’ve been keeping from them. Just for this weekend, for our long-awaited college reunion, I want to put all that aside and have some fun.

But it wasn’t my secrets I should have been worried about. It was theirs.

When Ada draws truth, she can’t meet my eye. “Ivy…” she begins and then stops. Before saying something that I immediately wish she could take back.

But of course she can’t, not now.

The worst thing is no one else seems as shocked. I realise they have let me think I was to blame all these years. Perhaps I never knew my closest friends to begin with. Maybe we were never actually friends all…

Review

You remember at school and you had some good friends, great friends even and you shared everything? You had each other’s backs, were there for each other in good and in bad times. There were no secrets between you …

Then marriage and children happen and even though you never lost touch, the contact is not the same anymore, but that does not mean you are not best friends anymore, right?

Maybe it’s time for a little reunion to prove just that and have a happy relaxed weekend away from the every day life. That’s just what the doctor ordered …

Did their friendship stand the test of time and are secrets meant to be revealed of stay buried forever?

This is a story that I liked a lot. It’s about friendship, second chances,  facing and dealing with your problems.  The author managed to add the exact right amount of emotion into the mix. 4 stars

His Hidden Wife by Wendy Clarke / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @WendyClarke99

:

The first time you see them, out for an evening walk on the cliffs, you’ll think they’re the perfect family. You’ll see a wife who looks so happy, strolling peacefully beside her husband in his dark winter coat, holding her daughter’s hand. But you have no idea what’s really happening in their house…

If you come a little closer you might hear the way the man speaks to his wife.

You might notice that the woman doesn’t have any close friends. That sometimes her husband doesn’t want her to leave the house. You might wonder if that’s a scar her beautiful daughter is hiding on her neck.

When you read the local newspaper and hear the news that the wife has fallen from the cliffs, you’ll question whether it was really an accident at all.

And when the husband starts dating someone new – a woman with the same long dark hair and big blue eyes as his wife – will you say something this time?

Because someone has to protect the little girl and stop history from repeating itself. And it may already be too late.

Review

I have read books by this author before and I am a fan. Needless to say that I was looking forward to this one too.

It’s true that not every book grabs you by the throat straight away with a lot of action going on, but that’s not a problem for me. As long as the author can keep me interested, that is what I am looking for. I know that somewhere, sometime, the story will explode and that I will be lost to the world.

First of all I like the cover, but that’s me loving jewellery. You can’t go wrong there. 😉 Good choice.

When I read the title, I had some scenarios in my head, but none of them were the right ones. Kudos to the author for this. 😊

After having read a book, I take a few moments to think about it and especially how the cover and title fit the story. I already talked about the cover. So, how did I feel about the title? I quite like it when the title summarizes the whole book, but sometimes it’s indicating something else too. It focusses then on one important part of the story and this was the case this time in my opinion. It was only a very small part in the book, but when that was revealed, for me, that’s when all hell broke loose.

I never knew who to trust and I love that. It shows the author’s background in psychology. She uses it to create interesting stories. 5 stars.

:

t’s a crisp spring morning when the small-town community around Briar Ridge Elementary School is shattered by devastating news. Bright and shy five-year-old Nicole has disappeared at playtime.

As Gia and Karen struggle with their guilt, a teacher at Briar Ridge dies in what looks like a tragic accident. But with two deaths in such a short time, Jo knows better than that. In this school, where soccer moms flock to the gates with cookies for teachers, someone is willing to kill to keep a secret. The only question is who.

Review

During my previous review for the author I said that she succeeded three times in a row to write an utterly captivating story. Well, let’s make that 4 times in a row, because this one was hitting bull’s eye as well.

Every parent wants to protect their child(ren). Some are doing a great job. Some, though, don’t exactly choose the right way of doing it. You can easily say they make everything worse, so much worse and the greatest problem is that they don’t even see it like that.

A murder is always shocking, but when a child is involved it touches me even more. How cruel are you when you hurt an innocent child, barely more than a baby? What could it have done to you to deserve this kind of punishment?

Is it a stranger lurking in the neighbourhood or does Detective Jo Fournier and her colleagues have to look for the culprit closer to home?

When the going gets though, the though get going and Jo knows what to do!

A great fourth book In this amazing series. There is a lot going on, but I can assure you, not everything is bad. There are some rays of sunshine peeking through the darkest clouds. Loved it. 5 stars.

M.M. Chouinard’s first fiction story was published in her local paper when she was eight, and she fell in love with Agatha Christie novels not long after. For sanity’s sake, she released them. She’s currently at work on her seventh novel.

The Missing Woman by Georgina Cross / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @GCrossAuthor

:

They live in the big houses on the pretty street. Those other women, as we call them. And to think I used to want to be like them, to have their money and happiness, to live and laugh and play like them. Not any more.

It’s the fourth of July and the whole town is gathered at the local pool. Through the sweltering afternoon, we single mothers don’t mix with the other women––the ones with the perfect lives and happy marriages. Women like Sabine Miller. But when Sabine shoots me a desperate look across the water and suddenly disappears, my blood runs cold…

Running to the back gate, all I find is a silver charm bracelet she dropped on her way out. I convince myself I’m imagining things until Sabine’s husband Mark appears. When he realizes she’s missing, he phones the cops straight away. “Someone has been threatening Sabine,” he says. “Now they’ve kidnapped her.”

Hours later, I wish I’d run faster. The whole town is searching the streets, calling Sabine’s name over and over. On the TV, Mark is begging for someone to bring his wife home.

The truth is, I was the last person to see her alive––and it’s killing me inside. Now the cops are at my door asking questions. I’m terrified they’ll find out what happened years ago between me and Sabine. Something I’ve never told anyone.

But I need to tell someone. Can you keep a secret?

Review

When you look like a happy couple, you have to be one, right? Well, yes, it most certainly will be true for a lot of people, but some fake it for years and years.

When you have money and fame, you can take those little not so nice things and put them on the backburner, right? Well, yes some people can and it also depends on what those little not so nice things are. Others will come to their senses and deal with it, because enough is just enough.

From the very beginning you feel that something is not quite right, but you don’t understand what is going on. The author really knows how to make her readers wait until she is ready to throw them another bone.

Of course, you start writing your own story with all the facts you have and that’s when you see that big parts are still missing. Why? Who? How? Those questions play hide and seek in your brain until, little by little, the author gives us the glue to put the pieces together.

Even though years may have passed since, a bond formed in the past will stand the test of time and events will still reflect on the present.

I loved the fact we were kept in the dark for a long time and I was happy with the way the story developed. What happens in public can be very different from what takes place behind closed doors. 5 stars.

Their Frozen Graves by Ruhi Choudhary / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @RuhiSChoudhary

:

Detective Mackenzie Price #2

Two women are dead. They both look like you.

The giant stretch of frozen river was melting and the light made the lake glitter like crystals. The women lay side by side on the shore, eyes open and glassy. Their long, dark hair was like tangled rope, their faces a reflection of each other…

When two bodies are found dumped in one of the vast lakes in Lakemore, Washington, Detective Mackenzie Price is first on the scene. She identifies one of the victims as Katy Becker, a local known for her work helping the community. The other victim looks strikingly similar.

Still grappling with a shocking revelation from her past, Mack is only too happy to throw herself into the case. But when she goes to break the news to Katy’s husband, the investigation takes an unexpected turn: Katy is very much alive, and has never met the women who resemble her so closely.

Now the race is on to find the killer before Katy becomes the next victim. But when Mack unearths a disturbing connection to a sixteen-year-old suicide, she realizes they could be hunting someone whose crimes span decades – and there are more lives than just Katy’s at stake.

Review

It’s sometimes hard, when you read a lot of series, to remember where the previous story ended. The author kindly helps her readers by adding a prologue to this part to freshen up their minds.

It all came rushing back and I was engrossed straight away. Not only were a few things from the private life of Micky revealed but that made it not any easier on her. She has a lot to think about, deal with and some hard decisions to make.

But revelations don’t always mean that everything is smelling of roses now. Sometimes they trigger other things and do you have to keep on digging or let the past be the past?

I really enjoy the relationship between Micky and her partner Nick. They work very well together and the banter is often hilarious.

The case they get thrown in their lapses is though. Every time they get a clue it seems that other questions rise in stead of solving them.

Did I have an idea about who the culprit was? Yes, I did and I was happy to notice I seem to get better and better. Is it too late to train as a detective? LOL.

Anyway there was enough that I did not work out and I really enjoyed the story thoroughly. I am looking forward to the next part, because I am convinced that it will be as great as this one and the previous one. 5 stars.

Review

Gangland crime stories… I just love them. No, please don’t think I am a violent person. I almost faint when I see a drop of blood, but this genre just does it for me.

Why? Well, I guess it has to do with the main characters. Although they are violent, they are often forced to be so in order to survive. They ard hard on the outside, but often are very vulnerable and an easy target. They are so damaged by their entourage that their only way forward seems to turn to crime. That’s were the money is, where the power is. Two things they did not have in their young lives.

It’s the same here. When someone reaches out to you and offers you a life where you can buy everything you want and where you are making the rules, it’s too tempting and you succumb.

Do you turn away from your friends? Yes! Do you regret it? An even bigger YES!!

But it’s never too late to how it was, right? A few sorries, maybe some money and life is hunky-dory again, right?

A great story that had me glued to my chair from the very beginning. I love the writing style and the characters (well some a lot less, but you know what I mean 😉 ). Love, friendship, lost chances and heartbreaking scenes are what make this book into an amazing one.

Thank you,  Kimberley Chambers and Harper Collins

Everybody Lies by Emily Cavanagh / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture

It sometimes feels impossible to keep anything hidden in a place like Great Rock. But now they have found that poor girl down on the beach, I realize just how many secrets we’ve been keeping all along.

Evvy has lived on the island of Great Rock all her life. Every year, after the holidaymakers have departed, storms begin to roll in off the Atlantic and the island returns to the small group of locals who, like her, have decided to make it their home.

When a body is found on the snow-covered beach it sends shockwaves through this tight-knit community and rattles Evvy to her core.

The dead woman worked on the island the previous summer and it seems strange she would have been visiting so out of season. What drew her back and who was she meeting? When Evvy learns that her partner,Ian, was the last person to see her alive, the shadow of the murder falls far too close to home.

As the icy weather closes in, the island is cut off from the mainland, and Ian is taken into custody. Rumours about what is really going on in Great Rock reach fever pitch, as Evvy works to prove Ian’s innocence before it’s too late.

But there are things about the people she loves that Evvy doesn’t know or has chosen not to see. The truth might not save the life she has worked so hard to build for herself. Instead, it might tear it apart…

Review

Everybody lies… That is a truism even though some people might claim they never do. I, on the other hand, think they are lying, because you just do. Little white lies to protect yourself or someone else or you do it to keep some dark secrets from surfacing.

Keeping secrets in a big city is a lot easier than in a village or a small island, but some do keep hidden for a very long time. And when those liars come clean, it’s devastating for their entourage.

Sometimes you want to escape from this suffocating place where everybody knows (almost) all your business, but when you have the chance to do so, that’s when you realize how much you would miss it when you are gone. Shall you stay or shall you go…?

A beautiful story that opens with a shocking event, but that’s not the only thing that is going on. Love, denial, heartbreak and friendship are only a few of the emotions that the author used to enthrall her readers. 5 stars.

Last Girls Alive by Jennifer Chase / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @JChaseNovelist

Detective Katie Scott #4

Half-buried in the muddy earth and surrounded by puddles of water lies the naked body of a beautiful young girl. Her pale skin looks like porcelain in the early morning light. Her fragile arms bent and crooked like a broken doll.

When Detective Katie Scott is called to the discovery of a young girl buried on the grounds of a former children’s home in Pine Valley, California, she’s hopeful it’s the end to a devastating cold case she’s been working on. No one has seen Candace Harlan since she ran away from Elm Hill Manor five years ago. Her death will be a tragedy, but it will also bring peace to those who miss her most. But the girl in the ground is not Candace.

The victim is almost identical to Candace in every way, but fear grips Katie as she takes in the black ink that decorates the girl’s back—a terrifying message tattooed on her skin after she drew her last breath.

Forcing down traumatic memories of losing her own parents, Katie is certain someone mistook this poor soul for Candace, and that this crumbling home for lost girls is at the heart of this terrible crime. She sets to work digging into the tragic history of the owners who lost so many children of their own and tracking down the last six residents and the staff who cared for them—but no one wants to talk, let alone remember.

The next day, as second girl’s body is found down by the creek at high water, the same words etched into her skin. Katie’s worst fear is confirmed: someone is picking off the last of the Elm Hill girls one by one. But what does the tattoo mean? And what monster would target these innocent girls who have already been through so much?

Katie must dig deep to confront her own fears and protect the vulnerable—but as the body count rises further, will there be anyone left to save?

Review

Katie is back. Together with her partner McGaven she tries to solve cold cases and this time it appears to be a hard nut to crack.

An ice cold case suddenly seems to turn into a red hot one and Katie and her partner don’t seem to find any clues. Witnesses are rather tight lipped or just don’t have the information the police needs.

And Katie is still being Katie. She often acts before she thinks and finds herself (and others) in dangerous situations. Her only goal is to bring justice to the victims. Following the rules is not always her first option. She does what she has to do: solve the cases.

Now time is running out and Katie finds herself, more than once, looking death in the eyes. Cisko also this time has a smaller role, but a very important one in the end.

A very good story where Katie reminds me of a cat. They also have nine lives… 5 stars for this intriguing book.

Her Final Prayer by Kathryn Casey / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @KathrynCasey

Detective Clara Jefferies #2

Her pulse pounded in her ears as she scanned the house. Her eyes traveled over the porch where three empty chairs lazily rocked in the breeze, surrounded by scattered children’s toys. In the yard, there were mounds of earth. Graves. Only big enough for children…

When Detective Clara Jefferies is called to a family ranch just outside of Alber, Utah, she’s horrified to find two innocent young children murdered alongside their mothers. But she arrives at the scene quickly enough to rush their father, Jacob Johansson, to hospital where he begins fighting for his life, and to save his two-month-old son Jeremy, left untouched in his crib.

As Clara begins to investigate, nothing she finds out makes sense. Though she uncovers photos of one of Jacob’s wives in his best friend’s trailer, her flower necklace underneath his bed, there are rumors that she was in love with a different man altogether. And as the close-knit community comes together to support Jacob, Clara’s own family shut her out of the investigation…

But Clara won’t give up. With the killer still at large, baby Jeremy is at risk, and every moment her family are helping Jacob they are also in danger. To earn her family’s trust, Clara finally has to face the past, but can she do it before it’s too late?

Review

On the one hand I wish I could say I was glad to be back in Alber, because it’s not a very friendly and welcoming village. On the other hand it’s the ideal background for a thriller and that makes me happy to be back. People are not keen on strangers even though Clara is not really a stranger. They don’t collaborate very well and that makes her life as chief of the police a lot harder.

It’s not easy when you have to find a killer, but it’s so much harder when people don’t want to open up and tell you everything they know. Clara would not be Clara if she would let herself be beaten by that behavior. No matter how hard she has to fight the people she has to interview, she does everything in her power to make sure the victims get what they deserve: justice.

Clara still struggles with her past and she has built a sky high wall around her heart. Little by little the wall is crumbling. Is she ready to let someone in again?

The author has shown she knows how to keep her readers captivated before and guess what… She does it again!

Some gruesome events are the base of this incredibly good book. 5 stars
