Married to a perfect stranger

Reunited with her warrior husband

When Constance inherited her father’s lands she had no choice but to marry cold-hearted Matthew Wintour. He left her for the battlefield without even a wedding night. Five years later Matthew has returned—a valiant knight! But Constance is no longer a frightened girl. And this time she must reach out to discover the honourable man behind the armour and what pleasures await them in the marriage bed…

When and where do you prefer to write?

I’ve been using our dining-table for the past couple of years, but we recently rearranged the furniture to fit in a desk. It’s wonderful! I get up around 5.30am so I start early. I wish it wasn’t the case, but that’s my best writing time.

Do you have a certain ritual?

After I write for a couple of hours in the morning, I get the kids up, do the school run and then go for a walk. It makes me feel energised again.

Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?

My day is basically a series of caffeine and biscuit breaks. I daren’t tell you how many, but they go in a certain order.

What is your favourite book?

That varies depending on how I’m feeling. The one that probably means the most to me is Jane Eyre, but I also have a real soft spot for The Crimson Rooms by Katharine McMahon. It’s a mixture of historical, romance and crime and I’d love to write something like it one day.

Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?

Not really. I’d like to write with more emphasis on historical, but there’ll always be romance in there somewhere.

Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?

Ha ha, no! Although I seem to write a lot of eccentric older women characters. They’re probably subliminally based on my grandmothers and great-aunts.

Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?

Sometimes I have to resort to making notes on my phone, but I usually have stationery on me somewhere. My bags are always full of pens!

Which genre do you not like at all?

Horror. I don’t like anything creepy or violent.

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

I’m actually talking about co-authoring a book right now, but it’s a secret so unfortunately I can’t tell you!

If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?

Iceland. I’ve always wanted to sit in a hot spring and look out at the snow. I’m writing a Viking book at the moment so it would be great for research!

Thanks so much for having me, Jenni x

She studied English at Cambridge and Hull University and now teaches Creative Writing at a small university in the north of England.
