Boomerville is back!
Join Hattie and Jo as they head to Southern Ireland to open Boomerville Manor, a holiday retreat for guests of ‘a certain age’. There’s Irish craic and shenanigans aplenty for the colourful cast of characters as everyone gathers for the grand opening.
Meet Melissa, an ex-cabaret singer running from her abusive husband, and Bill, a bachelor bullied from beyond the grave by the ghostly voice of his mother. Along with local bobby Harry the Helmet, ageing aquatic team the Boomerville Babes, eccentric artist Lucinda Gray, and heartthrob Finbar Murphy, they gather in Ireland and the fun begins. But murder is in the air and there’s mischief afoot. Will the residents get more than they bargained for at Boomerville?
Set in the beautiful Irish countryside, ‘Boomerville at Ballymegille’ is a heart-warming story of friendship, fears and new beginnings.
Q&A
Els, very many thanks for hosting me on your fabulous blog during my book launch of Boomerville at Ballymegille. It’s a real pleasure to chat and answer your questions.
When and where do you prefer to write?
I used to like early morning best of all but now, I write whenever I can and try to keep to a routine and time scale if I am working on a novel. I always write in my office, at my desk, in complete quiet. No distractions other than Fred, my Westie, curled up by me feet.
Do you have a certain ritual?
At least two thousand words a day. If the writing is flowing, I aim to keep going until I reach that word count, no matter what. My husband threatens to lock my office door, without chocolate or gin, and not let me out until I’ve hit my target and his threat seems to work.
Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?
Coffee as the day lengthens and plenty of chocolate.
What is your favourite book?
This changes constantly. I’ve just read Jo Jo Moyes, The Giver of Stars, and thought it superb, so different to her other books. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is fantastic too.
Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?
Yes. Hattie Goes to Hollywood, which follows Boomerville at Ballymegille, is a mystery and was great fun to write. I would have loved to have been a private investigator and writing through the eyes of one allowed me to do this.
Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
My working life has revolved around the hospitality industry and this is a wonderful arena for observing characters, so yes, I guess I base my characters on people I might have come across or whose traits I’ve thought would be worth blending into someone worth writing about,
Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
No. I should, but I don’t. If I have an idea I talk it into the recorder on my phone and try to remember to write it down when I get home.
Which genre do you not like at all?
Sci-fi and fantasy. It’s never rocked my boat and I don’t think it ever will.
If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
I’ve travelled extensively and combined it with research but if we ever get out of this pandemic and are allowed to travel freely, I will head to India and see as much of that fascinating country as I can.
