Q&A
– When and where do you prefer to write?
Where I prefer to write is very different to where I do write, at least during these uncertain times… I love writing when at our property in France, due to the peace and quiet we have there. I listen to the radio and off I go. As for the when, that is when the story flows, fitting it in around looking after my husband and two dogs. For example, I’m currently in France (though after leaving discovered that we shall have to quarantine upon our return), awake at silly o’clock and decided what a great time to tackle the questions I promised I would answer for you. In the UK, my desk is at the bottom end of our lounge and my outlook is onto our garden… what could be better J
– Do you have a certain ritual?
The only ritual I have, if you could call it that, is that I don’t do much until after my second cup of tea… I’m not, as a rule, an early bird. I, therefore, need that time to wake up before I start to do anything. On the rare occasions that I am awake at silly o’clock, I often have a glass of coconut water at my side instead… rather that then when I do head back to bed waking up bursting from drinking tea LOL.
– Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?
During the daytime, decaf tea is my constant companion, often coupled with salt and vinegar crisps. Of an evening it might then switch to a nice glass of red wine, though that is usually around meal times when I down tools for the day, unless something urgent crops up that is.
– What is your favourite book?
I don’t have just one favourite book, I have a series. I grew up reading Jackie Collins books and though it’s been a while since I have read one, sadly due to her demise, I hold the Lucky Santangelo books dear to my heart.
– Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?
Oh I have already written in other genre J and would do so again. I wrote a financial crime thriller which launched last year and have two other WIPs which are crime related. I also have an alter ego who writes raunchies, as I love the variety that writing brings.
– Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
Oh yes, definitely LOL. Not that I would ever let on to them which elements are based on whom.
– Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
I do, but rarely use it. I tend to put notes on my mobile phone. I usually end up using my notebooks for recipes rather than writing…another passion of mine being cooking.
– Which genre do you not like at all?
I dislike horror, which is odd as when I was in my late teens I devoured them. I grew up with the likes of James Herbert and Stephen King, but then had enough of those and moved onto Jackie Collins.
– If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
P.G. Wodehouse? I have no idea what the result might be, but it would be fun.
– If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
Well I have done that already in the past. My husband and I booked our first ever long-haul holiday and went to Mauritius in September 2019. I had a WIP at the time which was initially set partially in the Maldives, but I have changed that Mauritius. Unfortunately, my bookkeeper knew of the change, due to us being friends as well, and so the expenses weren’t allowable. For I Don’t Do Mondays! I was due to go to New York for research with a friend of mine, but instead had to do all that online due to the inability to travel when I needed to, due to lockdown.
Having said that I wouldn’t say no to a trip to the Maldives where I can swim and enjoy the sunshine and have the peace and quiet to write in their stunning, tropical environs.

Colette Kebell is an author of Chick-lit/Romcom, though a relatively new one and thus far has self-published her books. Her books are light-hearted, fun and quirky and even considered by some to be inspirational. As a career, Colette spent her later years as a legal secretary. After a first attempt at writing many years ago (a book that still remains in her drawer) she resumed this passion a few years back, after being made redundant. After a few book signing events and a book talk, which almost caused her to collapse with nerves, Colette now spends her time between her home in the UK and her home in France.
Colette has two adorable dogs and spends some time, when not writing and marketing her books, cooking for herself and her husband, gardening or designing various items for their home. Amongst her other hobbies, she has also experimented with furniture upholstery, and she might, from time to time, have a paintbrush in her hand.
