Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

I love writing in Cafés although that’s been curtailed throughout Covid restrictions. It seems to be my creative space. The next best place is my desk, upstairs overlooking the rooftops (I can’t quite see the beach/sea although it’s within walking distance). My only problem is that it’s a very messy space at the moment. It’s reflecting my state of mind – overflowing with all the things I’m juggling. It will need tidying up again.

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

At home, I need quiet, I can’t even have the radio or music on nowadays. It was a different story when I was young and I used to study with the music blaring. It’s strange though that the conversations/chatter and clatter of the café doesn’t bother me at all.

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

My hero authors are mostly deceased. If I could channel them as I write, perhaps John Le Carre or Peter Temple would be good mentors, co-writers for my genre. I love the complexity of and the social issues reflected in their stories. I’m sure I could learn a lot from co-writing with them.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

I’d be kidding myself if I said ‘bad guy’. As much as I’d like let loose and be a ‘bad one’ in a story, I know I’d regret it. I need to be a ‘good one’.

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

I’d love to interview Liane Moriarty. She was a big success overseas before she became successful here in Australia. I am also a big fan of non-fiction writer Caroline Overington. She’s an amazing investigative journalist (I drew on her book Kick Back for inspiration for Lethal Legacy) and I’d love to learn more about her and how she works.

Where can I find you when you are reading?

Anywhere. I can be sitting in the car waiting for the grandchildren after school, sitting in the lounge while my husband watches telly, or on the bus on the way to town. Mostly I read when I can find a spare moment.

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

I walk along the foreshore most mornings (I post photos on Instagram). Mornings are also for coffee with my husband while I do the sudoku, 9-letter puzzle, and the clue-less crossword. I love going to the theatre, visiting art galleries, spending time with friends and family, and we look after grandchildren after school during the week or during school holidays.

Back when we could, I loved travelling overseas. We’ve been confined to travelling around our state for the last few years, but I’m really looking forward to getting overseas again – especially Paris and that cancelled trip to Italy.

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

I can’t believe it. When I started writing, I was testing myself to see if I could finish a complete novel. I didn’t think I’d ever publish it. To think I’m about to release my second blows me away.

How do you come up with a title for your book?

My first book, the title Deadly Secrets was set before I’d finished writing it. For Lethal Legacy, I had about 14 options and dithered about which I thought worked best. I asked people for their opinions, but in the end, there was no clear winner. I had to choose.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

My cover designer, Amanda from Let’s Get Booked, came up with the designs and I love them. I sent her images of other book covers I liked, and explained what appealed to me about them, but given I chose such a big range (and I have trouble narrowing anything down to a favourite) she’s a marvel to have distilled all the information to come up with such stunning designs. I could never come up with such professional covers on my own.

About the author

I’m an Australian author and I’ve lived in Adelaide, South Australia, for about forty years. I grew up in country areas near Melbourne.

My second novel, Lethal Legacy, is a conspiracy mystery/thriller set mostly in Australia. It’s available on pre-order until release day 8 April 2022. Deadly Secrets, my debut novel, is an Australian political conspiracy mystery thriller. It was released in 2020. My short stories have appeared in the UK anthology When Stars Will Shine; the Australian anthology Fledglings; the online Canadian Scarlet Leaf Review Magazine; and the UK Writers’ and Readers’ Magazine.

My work experience includes a public service career spanning roles as diverse as Management Trainer, Team Facilitator, Statistician, and Laboratory Assistant. These required business writing skills, so when I retired, I successfully completed a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing at Adelaide University. I’d also completed numerous short creative writing courses at Writers SA and WEA. My first degree was a Bachelor of Science, Chemistry, and I have a Graduate Diploma in Education.

Besides writing; another of my passions is travelling and discovering new places. I’ve visited many fabulous countries and cities around the world. I keep a daily travel journal and take copious photos and many of these inspire scenes for my stories e.g. Deadly Secrets begins in Paris and has scenes set in Normandy, Nice, and Barcelona before returning to Australia where the action happens in Adelaide, Sydney, and outback SA. I’m an avid theatre-goer and subscribe to the Adelaide State Theatre company. I enjoy art exhibitions and galleries and of course, I love to read. In March each year, I take full advantage of the Adelaide Writers’ festival to discover new authors and to hear my favourites. Some of the writers I admire are Elliot Perlman, Anna Funder, John le Carré, and Peter Temple
