Laura opened her door and peeked out. “Jax…”

“Laura,” he replied sarcastically as he pushed the door open.

Ace greeted him excitedly, and he got down on one knee to pet him. “I’ve been trying to call you all night,” he said, refusing to look at her. “I was worried about you.” His anger turned into rage as he listened to her stumble through some cockamamie explanation about leaving the phone receiver off the hook. He stood up to face her. “Huh. Usually when that happens, the person calling gets a busy signal.” He lifted a brow, waiting for her to respond.

“How did you get into the building?” she asked, and she couldn’t have looked more nervous if she tried. “There’s a police car out front.”

“I used the back door. It’s funny, Laura. I’ve never seen you wear that shade of lipstick before.”

Her hand flew over her mouth. But in the next second, she narrowed her pretty hazel eyes and glared back at him, realizing that he knew the truth.

“You lied to me,” he snapped at her.

She swung away from him and headed for the couch. “No, I didn’t. I just didn’t tell you everything. There’s a difference.”

“Like hell there is!”

Ace barked at him while Laura sat down and straightened her silk bathrobe. “Keep your voice down. You’ll wake the neighbors.”

Her audacity, coupled with him catching a glimpse of the fancy black dress beneath her robe, pushed him right over the edge. “You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into. Orin Marino and Snake Petrone are gangsters, ruthless killers who get rid of anyone who steps in their way. When they discover who you are, and what you’re up to, your life isn’t going to be worth a dang penny. Not even a tails-up penny.”

Laura snickered as she stroked Ace lying beside her. “You’re being a little dramatic, aren’t you, Jax? If you would stop pacing and calm down for a minute, maybe we could discuss this like adults.”

He made some growling noise that caused Ace to tip his head in puzzlement.
