Q&A
- Which character would you like to be in this book?
I think if I was going to be one of my characters it would have to be Frank McGill. He’s self-confident, tough, uncompromising and fiercely loyal. In reality, I’m more like Danny Kinsella, a bit of a geek who’s happier in the background.
- Do you always take a book/e-reader wherever you go?
Whether it’s a paperback or an app on my phone, I’m very rarely without something to read and often read more than one book at a time.
- Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?
I like characters that are a little good and bad. Anti-heroes with questionable pasts who break the rules to get the job done are my personal favourite. My name has, so far, appeared in three books. I’ve been a victim, a dead body and a detective. Although I’ve enjoyed them all, I think, like most people, I’d like to be the hero. Whether that means I’ll be ‘good’ or ‘bad’ would depend on the story.
- Do you prefer to read/write standalones or series?
I do enjoy both but I would say I prefer series. Some of the best books I’ve read have been standalones, but the problem with those is that you know you won’t meet those characters again. I really like reading a series and following familiar characters through different stories. I love getting to know them and watching their personalities evolve.
- Where can I find you when you are reading?
I’m away from home quite a lot so do most of my reading these days in various hotels. When I’m at home I’m either in my chair in the living room or sitting in the garden.
- Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?
When the kids were growing up, all of my spare time was spent driving them around for various sports and events. Now that they are grown up, my wife and I have rediscovered our love for the theatre and like to go and see something as often as possible.
- Can you walk past a bookstore without going inside?
Absolutely not, I love browsing the shelves of a bookstore in the hope that I find some hidden gem. One of my local bookstores has around half a million used books spread across different rooms and floors. They also have a coffee shop in the back that my wife and I frequent. On one occasion, it took me over an hour to get from the front door of the shop to the café.
- What are you most proud of?
From a writing point of view, I’m most proud of the effect some of my writing has had on people. To be told by someone who struggles to read that my book is the first they’ve managed to read since school and it has encouraged them to read more is a very special feeling.
- What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?
Excitement and worry. I want people to read my book and enjoy it but, at the same time, I’m worried that they won’t. I think I suffer from a classic case of imposter syndrome and am always nervous that my work isn’t as good as I think it is.
- What piece of advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Don’t give up on your dreams. Writing a novel can be frustrating and we all go through phases when we think we have no talent and may as well give up. Don’t. Keep pushing through the uncertainty and get it written. Submitting your finished book is another process full of frustration and self-doubt but, if you stick with it, you’ll be amazed by what you can achieve.

L J Morris is an author with a lifelong love of books and storytelling that he developed as a child. He spent most of the 80s and 90s serving in the Royal Navy as a Weapons Engineer and now lives in Cumbria, with his family. He currently works within the defence industry and continues to write at every opportunity.
His short stories have appeared in several anthologies including Volumes 1 & 2 of Best-selling author Matt Hilton’s anthology series ‘ACTION: Pulse Pounding Tales’.
Other anthologies he has appeared in include ‘Happily Never After’, ‘Wish You Weren’t Here’, and ‘Liminal Time, Liminal Space’ where one reader described his tale ‘True Colours’ as “Riveting and powerful”
