Pursuing the truth can be a dangerous game…

School’s out for the summer, and Eye Spy Investigations have a new case – looking for Lady in Red, a lost masterpiece by Victorian painter, Gabriel Pascoe.

The clock is ticking for Alex and Donna, because the artist’s house, Acacia Villa, where their friend Jake lives, is due to be demolished, and vital clues may be destroyed. And Alex has an additional problem: he is terrified of snakes, and Jake has a pet snake called Queenie…

As the twins pursue their enquiries, they come up against the man who wants to demolish Acacia Villa. But Mr Mortimer is the godfather of their baby half-sister, Sophie, and criticising him could open up family rifts, which have only just healed.

Then Queenie goes missing, setting in motion a disastrous train of events that will turn the search for Lady in Red into the twins’ most dangerous case yet.

Q&A

– When and where do you prefer to write?

Now that the kids have left home, I have my own study, full of all the things that inspire me: lots and lots of books, and a beautiful desk made for me by my husband, and of course our cat, who likes to keep me company when I write.

– Do you have a certain ritual?

Between 2.30 and 5.30 pm is my best time for writing fiction. I use the mornings for emails, research and promotion.

– Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?

I’m not a great snacker, so I’m very boring in that respect. But I can’t write if I’m hungry!

– What is your favourite book?

This is such a hard question, but book that I have read the most times is Venetia by Georgette Heyer. I return to it every time I’m in need of solace or going through tough times. She even went to the same school as a child that I later attended.

– Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?

I feel I’m now ready for a new challenge, so I’m working on my first YA thriller. It’s a reworking of a Dickens novel set in a contemporary diverse London.

– Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?

I often borrow character traits from people I know, and fuse them together to form new and unique characters. For instance, Alex’s practicality and Donna’s impulsiveness were inspired by a brother and sister I spent a lot of time with as a child.

– Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?

I get ideas from everywhere: books, TV, films, overheard conversations, and I try and record them while they are still fresh in my mind, but I have to do it digitally because even I can barely read my own handwriting!

– Which genre do you not like at all?

Science fiction has never been my thing, although I did read some John Wyndham  as a teenager.

– If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

It would have to be JK Rowling. I love both the Harry Potter books, and her detective series, and I believe I could learn so much from her.

– If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?

I have an idea for a YA novel set in Paris during the 1920s. We went to Paris for our honeymoon, and I would love to return there to do research in Montmartre and the sort of places where Edith Piaf and Ernest Hemingway used to hang out.
