Mink Eyes – Dan Flanigan / #Interview #BlogTour @RRBookTours1 @KeriBarnum @_DanFlanigan

The year is 1986–the tarnished heart of the decade of greed.

Private detective Peter O’Keefe, a physically scarred and emotionally battered Vietnam vet, is hired by childhood friend and attorney Mike Harrigan to investigate what appears to be a petty mink farm Ponzi scheme in the Ozarks. Quickly O’Keefe finds himself snared in a vicious web of money laundering, cocaine smuggling, and murder–all at the behest of a mysterious mobster only referred to as Mr. Canada. Also caught up in Mr. Canada’s illicit network is the exquisite Tag Parker, who seems to dance between roles as the woman of O’Keefe’s dreams–and his nightmares.

Q&A

1. Which character would you like to be in this book?

Kelly. She is smart, young, and has more promise because she has made fewer mistakes than the rest of the characters.

2. Do you always take a book/ereader wherever you go?

Yes

3. Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Flawed and Complicated, but Good. Why would I want to be any different in fiction than i want to be in life?

4. Do you prefer to read/write standalones or series?

I would have said standalones until recently but am now writing the second in what i hope is a long O’Keefe/Mink Eyes series.

5. Where can I find you when you are reading?

I read every place I go. Lately often in a car or some vehicle (Audible).

6. Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

Working (though that involves a lot of reading); walking around the city; theater, dance, music events.

7. Can you walk past a bookstore without going inside?

I can and often do, but it is hard to pass up, and I probably am more likely to stop in there than in about any other retail establishment.

8. What are you most proud of?

An adventurous life of hard work (plus a lot of good luck) that has, among other things, enabled me to be a reliable support for my family. And I hope to also be able to say someday that I persisted with the writing through many decades despite all the obstacles, rejections, rationalizations, and excuses.

9. What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

A little bit of pride but a lot of fear of failure.

10. What piece of advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Be honest with yourself about your talent, and not just the negative side. If you think your work is good enough, don’t let the gatekeepers get you down; find a way. But think hard before you give up your day job. And “Don’t follow leaders, watch your parking meters.”
