Q&A

– When and where do you prefer to write?

I write in the morning and into the afternoon. I have an old oak desk in the corner of a lovely quiet sunny room.

– Do you have a certain ritual?

Painfully so. Complete quiet please with the internet turned off. My dogs are allowed in, if they promise to behave and sleep snuggled up under the desk.

– Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?

Raspberry gin works well and a tin of chocolate biscuits.

– What is your favourite book?

I love The Old Wife’s Tale by Arnold Bennett. A tale of two sisters but written by a man who completely captures their essence. It is set in the Potteries, not far from where I was born, so I guess I associate with the area. I love the historical aspect of the writing.

– Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?

I switched from romantic fiction/romcom to cosy crime and would never dismiss trying another genre in future.

– Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?

Sometimes perhaps, but my characters might be an amalgamation of people I’ve observed or an aspect of their character that lends itself to creating something new.

– Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?

No. I should. But the voice recorder on my phone is useful.

– Which genre do you not like at all?

Sorry science fiction fans but I really don’t get it. Not a genre I would spend any time with.

– If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

If I’m going to spend all that time with a co-author it would be someone dishy and knowledgeable. A man with a tale to tell and a twinkle in his eye. Ideally, he’ll like gin and chocolate too which will help the words to flow. Richard Gere are you available?

– If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?

Good question. I’ve travelled for research in the past and I have a longing to go to Thailand. Not least because I have a good friend there but more importantly it’s on my bucket list as a tribute to my dad. He was a Far Eastern Prisoner of War, captured and enslaved on the notorious Death Railway and I want to visit The Railway Museum. There will be a great story to be written after that trip.
