WHAT IF YOU FOUND YOUR FRIEND DEAD AND FEARED YOU’D BE NEXT?
Jewelry designer Fiona McKay is working on her latest collection of Celtic-inspired jewelry. She’s excited by the possibilities uncovered by Rose Flaherty, the antiquities dealer helping her research the heirloom tapestries inspiring her new collection. So when Rose calls to tell her she has answers, Fiona hurries to meet her. But her artistic world is shattered when she finds the lifeless body of the elderly woman.
Why would anyone kill such a harmless person? And what if Fiona had arrived just a few minutes earlier? Would she have been killed as well? Unnerved, she heads for her brother’s Brooklyn apartment seeking advice and comfort.
Ryan McKay, Forensic Instincts’ technology wiz is not amused by his little sister interrupting his evening with his girlfriend and co-worker, Claire Hedgleigh. But when Ryan and Claire hear the details of Rose’s murder, they fear that Fiona could be next, and quickly assume the role of her protectors. What they’re unaware of is how many people are desperately seeking the information now buried along with Rose.
A former IRA sniper. A traitorous killer who worked for the British. Two vicious adversaries taking their epic battle to America. A secret Irish hoard as the grand prize in a winner takes all fight to the death.
As the story woven into the tapestries passed down from McKay mother to daughter unravels, Forensic Instincts realizes that Fiona and her family are in grave danger. Together, the team must stay one step ahead of two rival assassins or risk Fiona’s life and the McKay family tree.

Which character would you like to be in this book?
Without a doubt, Fiona. She’s such a dynamic personality, and her talent at creating beautiful jewelry is enviable to me (since I can’t draw a straight line). And her courage—coping with having her life in danger and still pushing forward with her goal—is awesome. I absolutely adored creating her and watching her take on a life of her own. Beauty, brains, personality, and talent all in one—plus a super-hot, super-cool brother—who could ask for more? She even has her own website now: fionamckayjewelry.com where you can go to view and purchase some of the exquisite pieces she created in No Stone Unturned. How awesome is that?
Do you always take a book/e-reader wherever you go?
It depends on where I’m going. I need quiet and open space in order to read or write. And I get motion sickness in any form of vehicle you can name. So, frustrating as that is, reading and/or writing while traveling is out. But if I’m outdoors, or in a library, or in my office? Absolutely!
Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?
I’d rather be the most complex, clever, and dynamic one. Sometimes that’s the protagonist and sometimes that’s the antagonist. Whoever has the most layers, is the most interesting and the most cunning—that’s the character I’d want to be.
Do you prefer to read/write standalones or series?
I’m biased about this question, even though I love writing both standalones and series books. But at this point, I’m really invested in the Forensic Instincts team. So I have to cast my vote for series books, since No Stone Unturned is the 8th book in the FI series and I can already start to feel the 9th one in the making.
Where can I find you when you are reading?
When I was a teenager, I did my homework on my bed, with notebooks and text books strewn all around me. Same in college. I was an English major, so I did a ton of reading—all of which I did sprawled out on the bed. Nothing has changed. My reading time is almost always on my bed, leaning back against my comfortable headrest and covered by a cozy blanket. Add a nice, hot cup of coffee, and I’m a happy camper.
Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?
You can find me playing with my two-year-old granddaughter who is the light of my life. She’s a true joy and a blessing. During baseball season, you can find me glued to the TV, watching my NY Yankees and cheering them on (hopefully this year to a World Series championship). I’m also a word puzzle addict, which I do whenever I have a few minutes of free time and when I want to trick my brain into waking up and getting creative.
Can you walk past a bookstore without going inside?
Nope. I used to spend hours in bookstores, browsing, skimming, reading, and purchasing books. Unfortunately, so many of those bookstores have now closed, which makes me terribly sad. I miss those days when there were a ton of independent bookstores with staff and managers who knew my exact reading tastes and who loved books as much as I do.
What are you most proud of?
Without a doubt, my family. As proud as I am of my career, I’m even prouder of them. They’re compassionate, caring, fine human beings and they’ve been my support and my inspiration since I wrote my first novel thirty years ago.
What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?
It’s like giving birth to a new child each time! There’s still a sense of wonder and excitement that something I’ve worked so hard to create has finally come to fruition. Of course, unlike the way it is when you hold your new baby, I see more than the beauty. I also search for every flaw, hoping against hope that what I’m offering my readers is the very best it can be. I’ll never stop being a diehard perfectionist; it’s just who I am.
What piece of advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Write because it’s what your gut and your heart tell you it’s what you have to do. Publishing is a brutal business. Toughen up, and remember that the thing you have most control over is your work product. That’s where you should concentrate your energies.
