50 Dinosaur Tales: And 108 More Discoveries From the Golden Age of Dinos

Gualicho takes a bite out of the ornithopod’s back as it runs away from her, causing it to stumble and fall. She jumps on top of the body and rips open its neck with her teeth. The ornithopod becomes still and limp.

Satisfied, Gualicho begins to feast. But, after only two bites, she senses something is wrong. She lifts her head and sees a Mapusaurus making its way toward her.”

About 50 Dinosaur Tales

Blending fiction with fact, 50 Dinosaur Tales imagines the way 50 newly described dinosaurs from the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous lived in their natural habitats.

Also included is a list of fun facts for each dinosaur story, and facts about 108 additional dinosaurs.

If you want to hear more about new dinosaurs as soon as they are discovered, listen to the weekly podcast I Know Dino.

– When and where do you prefer to write?

I have a pretty awesome desk set up at home. I sit next to a whiteboard, which is fun (and a great way) for me to jot down ideas, and I’m surrounded by dinosaurs. There are dinosaurs on my desk, dinosaurs decorating the wall, and even dinosaurs on the printer behind me.

– Do you have a certain ritual?

Sort of. I’ve learned that the best way for me to write is to have a clear outline, and then get right into it. I let any and all things go in my first draft, and worry about editing later.

I also tend to come up with ideas while I’m out and about. When inspiration strikes I jot down quick notes on my phone.

– Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?

Usually it’s ice tea. It’s refreshing, and it has some caffeine to help me keep going.

– What is your favourite book?

I have a lot! But one of my favorites is Raptor Red, by Robert Bakker. Bob Bakker is a very well known palaeontologist, and he wrote this amazing novel told through the point of view of Raptor Red, a female Utahraptor dinosaur. I wish there was more dinosaur fiction like that out there, and Raptor Red is one of the inspirations behind 50 Dinosaur Tales.

– Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?

Definitely! I’m a big fan of science fiction, and I have a lot of ideas (many of which involve dinosaurs, of course).

– Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?

Yes, or at least give them some of the same characteristics. It’s hard with a book like 50 Dinosaur Tales, since the characters are dinosaurs, but I did base some of the stories on certain friends and family members—especially the ones with the playful dinosaurs.

– Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?

I used to! But when I’m inspired and in a hurry, my handwriting is not that great, so recently I’ve switched to using my phone to keep track of my ideas.

– Which genre do you not like at all?

I think I like all genres. I used to think I only liked certain genres, but I worked in book publishing for a while and got to read a wide variety of stories. I’d say now I care more about the quality of the writing than the genre of the book.

– If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

If it could be anyone, it’d be Michael Crichton. He had such a great imagination and was really skilled at incorporating research into compelling stories.

– If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?

Can I say all of them? But seriously, one that is great for dinosaur research is Australia. There’s an area where the fossils have been opalized, and it sounds so cool. (I actually get to go there this October for a palaeontology conference, and my husband and I plan on stopping by Lightning Ridge, where the opalized dinosaurs are!)
