ESSEX – Tudor Rebel by Tony Riches / #Interview #BlogTour @maryanneyarde @tonyriches

Book Two of the Elizabethan Series

Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, is one of the most intriguing men of the Elizabethan period. Tall and handsome, he soon becomes a ‘favourite’ at court, so close to the queen many wonder if they are lovers.

The truth is far more complex, as each has what the other yearns for. Robert Devereux longs for recognition, wealth and influence. His flamboyant naïveté amuses the ageing Queen Elizabeth, like the son she never had, and his vitality makes her feel young.

Robert Devereux’s remarkable true story continues the epic tale of the rise of the Tudors, which began with the best-selling Tudor trilogy and concludes with the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

When and where do you prefer to write?

I’m an early riser, and some of my best ideas come to me in the mornings. (I sometimes wake with entire passages of dialogue in my head – and have to write them down before I forget.) I treated myself to an oak writing desk, when I thought I would work – but actually carry my laptop and write wherever I happen to be.

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

I like background music as I write, and my MacBook Pro has wonderful sound quality. While writing ESSEX I often played Finally Going Home by Katie Petersen (and she kindly agreed for me to use her lyrics as an epilogue.)

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

I’m a great fan of C.J Sansom’s Shardlake series – but if he was too busy I’d enjoy working with another of my favourite writers, Hilary Mantel.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

I’d be intrigued to see what sort of character I’ve been turned into. It would be fun to be some kind of heroic figure (perhaps with a few flaws).

Who would you have liked to interview?

I’d love to have an hour with Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, and subject of my new book, ESSEX – Tudor Rebel. In particular,

Where can I find you when you are reading?

My house is full of books, and I read everywhere I can – even on holiday, when I take my trusty Kindle. I like reading in my garden when the weather permits, and at the beach, which is only fifteen minutes away from my house.

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

My main interests aside from the Tudors are sailing and kayaking, as well as restoring vintage motorcycles, so you’ll either find me on the water, or ‘tinkering’ on a classic bike in my garage. (If anyone is interested, I’m currently working on a 1976 Norton Commando 850.)

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

I still haven’t lost the feelings of wonder and excitement on seeing my new books – even after writing fourteen of them. Here’s the box which arrived a few days ago:

How do you come up with a title for your book?

I’m following the convention I’ve used successfully for my Brandon Trilogy, so ESSEX – Tudor Rebel

is a succinct way of summarising his life. Robert Devereux was always unconventional, and the whole books leads up to his ill-fated ‘rebellion’ against Queen Elizabeth I.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

I’ve commissioned a talented artist, Gordon Napier, to produce the cover art for my Elizabethan series. His starting point is a collection of any known portraits – and his brief is to make them look more handsome (preferably with a ‘twinkle’ in their eye!)
