Jessica has had enough. She is young and beautiful with her own place and job, but she doesn’t want to be here anymore.

When she’s contacted by a mysterious agency, Jessica listens to their proposal and signs on the dotted line.

Nick appears at Jessica’s door: he’s her every fantasy made flesh. He promises to make all her desires come true … but there’s one thing she has to give him in return: her eternal soul.

Opening the folders, Jessica discovered what looked like crime scene photos. In every single one, bodies sprawled like broken marionettes. The pictures did not shock or distress her. Jessica had long since stopped feeling anything much at all. There was blood, in some, by the bucketload: even severed limbs and decapitated heads. Others bore the vicious marks of fire; electricity; drowning; even claw-marks and teeth. All were flamboyant deaths.

Abe tapped the last one. ‘That one was death by crocodile. Good times.’

He chuckled to himself, like he was remembering a friend’s stag party. Jessica slammed the book shut.

‘Not for me.’

‘Fair enough. Women tend to like the less violent deaths, plus we find they like to be in control of their, er, demises. But I don’t like to be sexist, so I always offer our deluxe packages first.’

He pushed another folder towards her. Jessica looked through the more traditional methods of death inside.

‘I could do these myself?’

‘It’s true, you could. But for the price, we would make sure whatever you choose is one hundred per cent successful. Plus you would not be alone. We would also spare your family, friends or neighbours the trauma of finding your body.’

Jessica mulled over his proposal. She had no family or friends, but she did not want to be decomposing before her landlord broke in wanting rent. Even so, a curious sensation bloomed in her belly. She was too averse to extreme pain to go ‘deluxe’ as Abe had put it. Yet she found she didn’t want to check out the usual way, either.

‘Do you have anything else?’

Abe smiled. This time, he did not look so benevolent.

‘I was hoping you’d ask that.’
