The Z-Tech Chronicles Book 1

An ancient, powerful evil is loose in San Francisco. The heart of Silicon Valley must fight back the only way they know how — with compassion, unwavering determination, and, of course, super-technology.

Anne Perrin is resigned to a life driven by an adolescent trauma: a strict routine, no socializing (outside of the safety of her waitressing job), and no romantic relationships. When her cautious lifestyle lets the perfect partner slip through her fingers, Anne vows she won’t let it happen again and ventures into San Francisco to find happiness.

Her first night out in a decade becomes a nightmare when her date turns on her with sadistic intent. But his nefarious plans for Anne are unexpectedly interrupted by a mysterious savior. Valiant, smart, compassionate … Charlie is exactly the partner Anne has been looking for. And best of all, he likes her too.

Things go well between her and Charlie until an assailant with unexpected strength plunges Anne into a world she didn’t know existed — nor could have imagined — where super-science and an eclectic group of extraordinary individuals may be the solution to Anne’s lifelong loneliness … and humanity’s only hope against an ancient threat.

Q&A

1. Do you always take a book/erader wherever you go?

Always. I’ve read dozens and dozens of books on my smartphone, which is my preferred reader. The small screen took some getting used to, but it’s nice to be able to pull up your current favorite book no matter where you are.

2. Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

The good one, without a doubt. Bad ones are usually without empathy, which I’ve never been able to identify with.

3. Where can I find you when you are reading?

Oh… pretty much anywhere. In line at the BART station, on the BART train, in the bathroom, in line at the grocery store, sitting in the recliner in our bedroom, out in the backyard under the sun shade… pretty much anywhere except at my computer, where I’m usually writing instead of reading.

4. Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

Either at work, indulging in the occasional Skyrim on my gaming PC, or hiking the eastern Sierras / Yosemite with my brother and any other family we can talk into coming along. Also occasionally in a large field flying a first-person quadcopter—and usually crashing it.

5. Can you walk past a bookstore without going inside?

Sadly, yes. Reading has become so digital for me that I can’t remember the last time I read a paperback. There, I said it. Forgive me, Mom…

6. What are you most proud of?

My kids. They’ve grown into kind, compassionate human beings who stand up for others. I couldn’t be prouder.

7. What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

Hoping to all that’s Holy it isn’t full of grammar mistakes and characters who make poor decisions simply for plot device, or who behave in un-human-like ways simply because it “isn’t that kind of book.”

8. What piece of advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Find a writing group. They can help you develop your skills in many more ways than any single piece of writing advice I could offer. Whatever effort you put into finding the right one will pay back in spades, I promise, and accelerate you career by years.

9. Who would you like/have liked to interview?

Leonardo DaVinci. Anyone with that much talent in so many different areas would probably be fascinating to talk to.

10. When and where do you prefer to write?

I usually wake around 5 am and find my best writing is between then and around 10 am. My favorite place to write is at my computer desk in the dining room because the chair is comfortable enough to sit in for hours at a time, the keyboard is easier on my fingers than my laptop, and I don’t have to worry about missing my family because I was engrossed in writing since they all eventually come to the kitchen. =]

Extract

Anne choked on her gag, which threw her into another coughing fit. Tight ropes bound her to a chair, preventing her from doubling over, which was just as well, because she would have thrown up if she did—not something she wanted to experience with a ball of cloth stuffed in her mouth.

Doris sat across from her, similarly bound and gagged. Anne could only make out her frightened eyes in the dim light, cast from a small window set high in the only door to their closet-sized prison.

I’m sorry, Doris, Anne thought. I’m so sorry you were mixed up in this. I wish I’d told you about the vampires so you’d at least know what we’re up against.

She could only imagine what horrible things were going through Doris’ head.

I wish, too, that I’d shared the wonders I’ve seen at Z-Tech. If you knew how resourceful Charlie, Mark, and Cappa are, you’d have the same hope that I do.

As clever as William thought he was, he wouldn’t elude them for long. Anne’s friends would find her, and when they did…

Heaven help him when Zima gets here.

The question was whether she and Doris would still be alive when they arrived.
