Q&A
– When and where do you prefer to write?
I’m totally a morning writer, with 9:30-1 being my most productive hours. However, since I write for a living, it’s not unusual for me to write all day (and if I’m on deadline, nights too). Normally, I like to limit my writing to Monday through Friday, but that changes to Monday through Sunday the closer I get to my deadline.
As far as where I prefer to write? I have an office with a beautiful L-shaped desk that my husband made and that I do not use. I much prefer the chaise lounge on the other side of the room. I also crave sunshine, so as soon as the weather gets warm enough, I move to the sofa on my three-season porch. I’ve also been known to drive my car to an empty parking lot to write. There is something about being in a silent car with coffee and a notebook that gets my creative juices flowing.
– Do you have a certain ritual?
Longhand writing. I always start my novels by writing the first half by hand. Actually, what I do is draft a chapter, type a chapter, alternating until the book is finished. I also write in total silence. Music of any kind disrupts the voices in my head.
Other than that, I have very few writing rituals. I know writers who can’t start until they’ve completed their morning pages or meditated, but I’m not one of them. Once I’ve checked my email and social media, I’m off to the races.
– Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?
I once dedicated a book to snack-sized candy bars. Does that count? Seriously, though, I used to need some kind of coffee while I wrote, but stomach ailments made me cut back. As for the candy, I would happily fuel my words with gummy bears, but my desire to maintain a decent weight keeps that habit to a minimum.
– What is your favourite book?
Oh man, that’s a hard question. There are so many books that I’ve loved over the years that I’m not sure I could limit myself to one favourite. Plus, it seems like every year I have a new one. Right now, I’m recommending everyone read Tara Jenkins Reid’s Daisy Jones and the Six because it was amazing. Last year my favourite was The Alice Network. If I were to pick a favourite romance of all time, I think it would be Mary Jo Putney’s Silk and Shadows.
– Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?
Yes, I have. As a matter of fact, I already do! A couple of years ago, I began the Sadie McIntyre mysteries, which are offbeat cozy mysteries. I’m currently working on a dual timeline general fiction novel. I believe very strongly that a writer should stretch herself and try new things. It keeps the creative juices fresh.
– Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
No. My characters tend to be amalgamations of celebrities, television characters and imaginary people who exist only in my head.
– Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
I should, because that would be smart, but I don’t. Instead, I tend to rely on my memory. Fortunately for me, my ideas tend to swirl around in the back of my brain for years. The book I’m working on now, for example, began as a vague idea when I was 20 years old. Over the past 30 years, it’s simmered and merged with other ideas. Sometimes it takes that long for a story to cook.
– Which genre do you not like at all?
I will read anything if I have to and probably find something to enjoy about it. However, I will never willingly venture into the science fiction/fantasy area. I’m not a huge fan.
– If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
Ooh, good question. Naturally, it would be great fun to co-write with my best friend, Donna Alward, just because we’re besties. However, if I had to pick a dream co-author, it would be Tara Jenkins Reid or the fabulous Kate Quinn.
– If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
England, England, England! I absolutely adore the UK and its history. I’d love to spend time in Northern England, around York or the Lake District (not to be confused with the Lakes Region which is in New Hampshire).
I also want to spend some time around Swindon. I have a story that I want to write that’s inspired by the late Diana Dors, who was from that area.
