The Book of Uriel by Elyse Hoffman / #SpotlightPost #BookTour @The_WriteReads @WriteReadsTours @Project613Books

***

In the fires of World War II, a child must save his people from darkness…

Ten-year-old Uriel has always been an outcast. Born mute in a Jewish village known for its choir, he escapes into old stories of his people, stories of angels and monsters. But when the fires of the Holocaust consume his village, he learns that the stories he writes in his golden notebook are terrifyingly real.

In the aftermath of the attack, Uriel is taken in by Uwe, a kind-hearted linguist forced to work for the commander of the local Nazi Police, the affably brutal Major Brandt. Uwe wants to keep Uriel safe, but Uriel can’t stay hidden. The angels of his tales have come to him with a dire message: Michael, guardian angel of the Jewish people, is missing. Without their angel, the Jewish people are doomed, and Michael’s angelic brethren cannot search for him in the lands corrupted by Nazi evil.

With the lives of millions at stake, Uriel must find Michael and free him from the clutches of the Angel of Death…even if that means putting Uwe in mortal danger.

Detective Ellie Reeves #4

She looked like an angel. She lay perfectly still, silky blonde hair falling to her pale shoulders. Icicles clung to her eyelashes as snowflakes fluttered to the frozen ground, burying her body.

As a snowstorm wreaks havoc in the mountain town of Crooked Creek, a woman is found buried in ice. Detective Ellie Reeves is first on the scene. Examining the body, she finds frozen blonde hair, pink nail polish and a silver heart necklace engraved with Mine Forever.

Ellie has first-hand experience of the monsters that lurk in the mountains––her childhood is testament to that. She vows to catch this one, but she’s up against the brutal weather, with snow covering footprints and making forensics impossible.

Frantically trawling through missing-person’s reports, Ellie identifies the victim. Nadine Houser disappeared eleven years ago. Where has she been all this time? Why was she only murdered now?

As storm clouds roll in, another girl is reported missing. Ellie retraces the steps of Ginger Weston who was renting a cabin in the mountains. She discovers a gold chain in the snow, spotted with blood. The killer is accelerating, and it’s just a matter of time before more innocent lives are robbed.

With the town blaming Ellie for the missing girl on her watch, and everyone fearing for their safety of their daughters, it’s down to Ellie to solve the toughest case of her career. But when the killer comes after her, will she live to save Crooked Creek from its ruthless monster?

Review

OMG how disturbed can someone be? Very, is without a doubt the right answer when we are talking about this unsub.

This story really made my stomach jump up and down a few times and I honestly felt the pain sometimes. It made my skin crawl.

Ellie really really is a tough one. I don’t know how she still can put up a fight after all she has been through already in this and the previous books. On the other hand though that’s probably what makes her fight so hard and does not want anyone’s pity. She is a very strong willed lady, but with a very big heart.

Of course the unsub is to blame for everything, but is there not a big part of the responsibility that has to be put on someone else’s conscience?

This book was blood-curdling and a must read pure and simple, as are the other books in this series. You won’t regret it. 5 stars

Spirit of Romance: Kandie Kisses by Michele Pollock Dalton

Hope for the Heart Series – Book 1

First part of chapter 1

The packed bar along the backshore of Lake Superior was stuffed to the gills and stifling hot as Mick Polenz set up his Bose sound system. Despite the governor’s “half capacity” orders, the Down Low Bar & Grill still hosted a wall-to-wall crowd every weekend. And Mick certainly didn’t mind. The tips he earned from the gig always put him in a better frame of mind.

Although music was his first love, Mick’s job as a first responder for the township paid the bills. The area that comprised Magellan was essentially Michigan’s last outpost before the land gave way to Lake Superior, but the quaint village was a welcome change from the hectic pace of Lansing.

The atmosphere at the Down Low pulsed through the heavily timbered room and spiked Mick’s enthusiasm for his upcoming show. Still, the nerves that lingered before each performance set his foot to tapping as he waited for one of the waitresses to deliver his water bottle. “Thanks, Chel,” he commented when the harried woman handed off his beverage.

Rachel Boulton paused for a moment and gave the shy man an equally bashful smile before turning to hurry away. “Heaven’s above!” she whispered to herself, wishing she had a hand free to fan her face. One simple brush of the burly firefighter’s calloused fingertips made Rachel think of things a good girl would never admit.

Tamping down her runaway hormones, Chel pressed through the rabble rousers to greet the next group of diners. “How many?” she called above raucous laughter and the opening song of Mick’s first set.

After leading the trio of suggestively clad women toward the last table, Rachel scanned the crowded bar room adjacent to the dining area. Intrigued, the busy waitress caught a glimpse of her favorite musician on the low-slung stage.

Alone under the weak spotlight, Mick’s rich baritone belted out Waylon Jennings’ “Good ‘ole Boys” then quickly segued into Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.” Always a fan favorite, wooden train whistles “tooted” in all the appropriate places while he played.

At the end of the song, he turned a lopsided, boyish grin to the boisterous group hamming it up at the front table. Self-named “Mick’s Clique,” the rowdy bunch cheered and hollered out song suggestions as the evening wore on, but the affable musician was always glad to have their support. Their energy fed his, and Mick played his heart and soul out.

When the dining room closed down several hours later, Rachel rushed through the evening clean-up, so she could get home and begin her preparations for the following morning. Run ragged between her job at the Down Low and the supplemental work she picked up by baking sweet treats for the Merry Hollow Tree Farm; the weary woman wondered how long she’d be able to keep pace.

As Chel exited the back door off the prep kitchen, she gave a perplexed glance at her vehicle. The hatch of her older SUV was aloft. “Well, what the heck?” she mused in consternation as she approached the mismatched Santa Fe. After a recent fender bender, the

predominantly black car now sported a red front quarter panel and driver’s side door. “Must have hit the button,” the buxom brunette mumbled as she pulled the key fob from the front pocket of her faded jeans.

Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

Actually I don’t have a preferred time, it sometimes depends on the schedule of the day or if I’m working, I can write in the mornings or evenings

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

Nope, I can write with the radio on or my husband watching telly or on the airport during busy times before da Rona happened. I always did my homework from school with the radio on and when I’m concentrating I start hearing one song and suddenly, when I’m done I realise there’s a completely different song playing – and one hour has passed

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

Ohhh, surely Thomas Harris, or Jon Bokemkamp who invented Raymond Reddington or maybe also Mark Frost who wrote one of my favourite books ever, The List Of Seven

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Always the demeted baddie!!!!

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

I was fortunate enough to interview quite a lot of great authors and horror people but the ones I’d have loved to interview are Sir Alfred Hitchcock, Karl Lagerfeld and Salvador DalI

Where can I find you when you are reading?

In summer in the garden and in winter on the couch with the moggies surrounding me

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

At work 😉 – and doing household chores or scratching a cat or probably on a short trip to a nice city

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

That part is still defying reality, quite a supernatural moment of disbelief mixed with a dash of ‘I did it’-pride

How do you come up with a title for your book?

Ha, that’s the worst part of it all, that and the short synopsis, if I’m lucky I have an epiphany regarding the title, if not it’s teeth-grinding work

How do you pick a cover for your book?

That’s usually an effort between the author and the cover artist and I’m lucky to have had Nikki East come up with a brilliant suggestion for Descent To Hell

Thank you so much for these great questions! xx

Thank you, Nic Parker and Zooloo’s Book Tours

About the author

Nic Parker was born in 1971 and lives in a rural part of Germany with her husband and seven cats. She fell in love with England on a school trip and has been travelling to the UK frequently ever since.

She worked in various jobs, can tell a good garment from crap, can help you find the perfect bra, knows which hotels not to book and knows the tricks of the insurance industry but her favourite job is as a bookkeeper.

Her love for horror stories and anything dark and decaying developed early in her childhood with comics and the old classic movies. The 80s were the most formative years for her when she hunted every gory video nasty she could find and started reading Clive Barker. Her taste for music is still mostly stuck in this decade, as is her undying love for neon and pastel colours.

She was already writing stories as a teenager but was disheartened by people telling her that as an outsider you don’t have any chances of being published. She learned not to trust the nay-sayers and to rather follow her dreams.

Writing is pure escapism for her and she’s happiest when she can conjure up new worlds and nasty characters.

Her hobbies include reading, movies, art, gardening, cooking and travelling to meet with friends.

First part of chapter 1

The rapid knock at Trent’s front door had him hoping that this unexpected interruption would spare him another lonely evening. Hastening his steps, he twisted the knob and sucked in a sharp breath. Nothing would have prepared him for this sight. His partner’s sister and the woman he had dated. Margaret King’s haunted green eyes stared back at him. Her blonde hair was thrown into a loose ponytail.

Several strands had escaped and fluttered in the evening breeze. Even disheveled, she was still beautiful.

Dread settled in his gut, anchoring a weight to his chest as Dalton’s last words filtered through his mind.

Promise me you’ll look after her and keep her safe.

“Maggie, what brings you here?” Trent’s mind raced with possibilities and none settled the growing dread that rotted in his stomach.

Her eyes widened briefly before she found her voice.

“Can I come inside?”

“Of course, sorry,” he stammered, moving aside and making a sweeping motion with his arm.

She hesitated for a second, then looked over her shoulder toward the driveway. Turning back, she met his gaze and released a deep breath. Remorse slapped him in the face as she entered his home. The last time he’d seen her was about ten months ago at Dalton’s funeral. Not once had Trent reached out to see how she had adjusted to life without her brother. Now, the weight of his mistake stood in his entryway. Guilt riddled his body and his gaze shifted toward the floor because he’d let her down.

The subtle scent of oranges and vanilla floated by him as she passed. The moonlight shining through the open window cast a silvery glow across her pinched face. He

clicked the deadbolt then flipped on the light before he sat on the sofa, waiting for her to join him. Her feet didn’t budge, but her gaze circled the room.

Maggie raised an eyebrow, her eyes blank. “I’m sorry I didn’t call first. I thought this discussion would be best in person. I can’t believe I had to search the internet to find your address.”

“I’m glad you’re here, and I should have given you my address. There’s no excuse for that…”

The tension in the room increased with every second of silence that followed.

“I-I don’t know what to think anymore. You might think I’m crazy or worse, have overreacted to drive all the way here.” Her voice sounded like sandpaper on wood.

Trent grabbed her hand and swiped his thumb softly across her knuckles. A rush of emotions flooded his system with that simple touch. He hated the strain emanating from her body. “Are you okay, Maggie?”

He released her hand and patted the spot next to him.

The cushions dipped as she sat, her gaze lingering on the room and surroundings. “Why do you have scaffolding outside? Did something happen to your home?”

Trent smiled and shook his head. “No, I just finished renovating the interior and have decided to upgrade my roof. What’s going on, Maggie?”

She turned to him, flashing a brief smile. “Good. I’m glad nothing bad happened to you. Could I have a glass of water?”

“You can have anything you’d like.” He meant those words and vowed to himself he’d prove it to her. “But you need to tell me what’s upset you. What made you drive all this way to find me?”

The single tear traveling down her cheek gutted him.

Her resolve and strength may have had her sitting beside him, holding herself together, but her vulnerability undid him. He tugged her body against his, to feel her warmth and

the pulse of her heart as he held her tight, to remind her she wasn’t alone to deal with whatever worried her. Even if his actions these last ten months told a different story.

A niggle of hoped bloomed in his chest when she hugged him back just as fiercely. This wouldn’t erase his absence from her life since the death of her brother, but maybe she’d see it as an olive branch to reconnect them to days long past. To the days when they were friends and all three of them spent time together.

When she sat back against the cushion, dark circles marred the delicate skin beneath her eyes. Trent’s mind whirled with a million questions. Had someone hurt her?

Had Maggie been with a man who threatened her? Why was she here? All of them remained unspoken because shame swamped his system. Not only was he a shitty person, but he’d broken a promise to his friend.

If only I’d taken out the shooter in the rafters, Dalton would still be here. Suffocated by the memories of that horrible day, Trent shot up off the sofa, desperately needing air and

space. “I’ll get you that water. When I return, how about you start from the beginning as to why you’re here?

Scotland, 1854

On a skinny, forgotten road in Edinburgh stood a shop without a name—a shop that could be found only if one had previously been led to its door. William, who was blind, rapped his knuckles on the door. The shop owner opens the door and says, “I recognize you. You’re the thief who slithered away while your partner swung by his neck.”

William begs the woman to break the curse that has been set on him that prevents him from dying. The curse, says the woman, cannot be broken, but it can be displaced. Is your death so precious to you that you would destroy one more innocent life to get it? The life of your own child?”

London 1895

In 19th century Scotland surgeon Edgar Price has only days to live. He has become host to a revenant that will corrode both his body and soul. Edgar’s fatal mistake has not only doomed him, but also released six more of these malignant wraiths onto the world. In his remaining time, he has vowed to stop the revenants from claiming other victims. His perilous travels lead him to the Witches’ Wood, a haven for a sisterhood of powerful enchantresses. There he meets Ainsley, who is also racing against the clock to save her life and will go to any lengths to spare the life of her lover Colleen from the grief of losing her. Despite their mutual dislike, Edgar and Ainsley find that the only way to traverse the twisted, otherworldly labyrinths that the revenants have created is to work together. Their mission becomes further complicated when Edgar begins to develop feelings for Fana, the guardian goddess of the Wood in spite of Ainsley’s forbidding warnings to stay far away from her.

Though THE RESURRECTIONIST is a work of fantasy, many of the settings and elements are based on fact. Horror and fantasy intermingle in this novel inspired by the true story of the Burke and Hare murders.

From 1828-29, Irish immigrants William Burke and William Hare were responsible for the murders of sixteen people in Edinburgh. Their methods generally involved luring a victim to Hare’s boardinghouse, where they plied them heavily with alcohol before suffocating them. They were motivated by greed, selling the corpses of their victims to a local surgeon, Robert Knox. Each victim was publicly dissected, and Dr. Knox is largely thought to have been complicit in the crimes.

During their ten-month killing spree, William Hare’s common-law wife, Margaret Laird, was pregnant with their child. Hare was pardoned for his crimes due to his confession and condemnation of his accomplice Burke, who was hanged and publicly dissected as punishment.

After being pardoned, Hare, Margaret, and their infant are thought to have escaped to Ireland. It also has been rumored that William Hare was thrown into a lime pit and subsequently suffered blindness before becoming a beggar. The victims in THE RESURRECTIONIST are also based on real life people.

Q&A

Did or do you like to read comic books/grapic novels? Which ones?

Comic magazines were very popular when I was a child, but there weren’t many comic books or graphic novels around then, so I never really got into them.  I’ve always preferred story books where I can let my imagination fly with the words, building the pictures of the action in my head.

Whom did you inherit your love for books/reading from?

My mother encouraged me to read – in fact she taught me the basics before I even started school at age five. I won a prize for reading in my first year in infant school, which gave me even more encouragement. My only sibling was several years older than me, so we weren’t natural playmates. Therefore I turned to books where I had lots of adventures with the characters in the stories I read.

When you need a murder victim or someone you can diagnose with a serious disease or someone who is involved in a fatal accident do you sometimes picture someone nasty you have met in real life and think ‘got you’ LOL?

Sometimes! But mainly, as characters develop on the page, I sometimes think: “I don’t like you very much, so you’re heading for a bad end.” In The Hidden, there are a couple of crooks who pursue the heroine across the Atlantic, intent on revenge. They are their friends come to a very bad end!

How do you come up with the names for your characters?

It’s not always easy – and I have an editor who often wants me to change names if their initials are the same or they sound similar to avoid confusion for my readers. So I have to be careful. I take into account popular baby names in the years when my characters were supposed to have been born, but also their class, possible nicknames, etc. Sometimes, a name seems to fit a particular character, which is a great gift for a writer.

In The Hidden, I am writing about a character from my previous book The Legacy. But she’s in hiding and has changed her name. So I used a derivative of her name in both cases – so a woman born as Felicity was known as Fliss in The Legacy, but changed it to Faye in The Hidden.

Do write other things beside books (and shoppinglists 😉 )?

Apart from blogs promoting The Hidden, I don’t have time for a lot of other kinds of writing at the moment as I’m already deep into my next project. It’s a series of six books about a group of friends who grew up in care together. It’s a contemporary set of stories, following their fortunes now they are all in their mid to late twenties. They’re finally in a good place and decide to find out what really happened when they were children and why they ended up in the care system.

If your movie or series would be made from your books, would you be happy with the ‘based on’ version or would you rather like they showed it exactly the way you created it?

That’s a tough one. Part of me would love someone to turn my books into movies or series, but I’m aware that I’m usually disappointed by the film versions of books I’ve read. It would be nice to think someone loved my books so much they wanted to remain faithful to my stories. For example, I love the picture of the big black dog, Bear, on the cover of The Hidden and I would love to see an animal just like that star in the movie of The Hidden. But in the real world, I think I would probably have to agree that they produce ‘based on’ versions and try not to get too worked up about it. So long as watching it encouraged people to read my books, I think it should be okay.

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

I don’t think I would want to interview a great writer, because I’ll get star-struck and tongue-tied and look like an idiot. So I’d rather go back and interview my secondary school English teacher – a lovely lady called Miss Jane McIntosh, who taught me at Kidbrooke School in Southeast London in the 1970s. I’ve wanted to find her and talk to her since I had my first book published, but sadly I haven’t been able to trace her. So if anyone knows her, please ask her to get in touch!

Do you have certain people you contact while doing research to pick their brains? What are they specialized in?

I rely on a mix of research books, internet searches and experts. For example, I have a cousin who spent several years as a forensics officer with the Metropolitan police who now provides expert guidance for authors. I’m currently picking the brains of a friend who spent several years in the travelling community to help me with a plot line in my new series. Certain friends have specific knowledge of historical periods or local history or a particular job. Specific groups on Facebook are great for getting first-hand information about particular issues. I’m happy to contact anyone who can provide me with an authentic view of an area of expertise or locality I want to write about.

For The Hidden, I used my experience of living as an exchange student in the US in the 1970s to give me a flavour of the culture and language of the time.

Is there someone you sometimes discuss a dilemma with?

I’m very lucky in that I have a lot of friends who are writers, so there’s usually someone with whom I can talk things through. My first port of call is my dear friend and business partner, author Jenny Kane. We run writing workshops, courses and retreats together as Imagine Creative Writing (www.imaginecreativewriting.co.uk ). Like me, she writes in more than one genre and has a wide range of interests, so she’s a great person to talk to about writing dilemmas.

What is more important to you : a rating in stars with no comments or a reviewer who explains what the comments they give are based on (without spoilers of course)

What writer doesn’t love a five star rating? Seriously though, both are important. It’s good to see what people think about my books. I am realistic enough to know that I’m not perfect, so I welcome constructive criticism, and I’m always grateful to reviewers who are careful not share spoilers as I like my readers to enjoy the twists and turns of my stories. I hope that the combination of star ratings and reviews will persuade people to read my books.

Thank you so much for welcoming me onto your blog and for your interesting and challenging questions!

About the author

Alison Knight has been a legal executive, a registered childminder, a professional fund-raiser and a teacher. She has travelled the world – from spending a year as an exchange student in the US in the 1970s and trekking the Great Wall of China to celebrate her fortieth year and lots of other interesting places in between.

In her mid-forties Alison went to university part-time and gained a first-class degree in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University and an MA in the same subject from Oxford Brookes University, both while still working full-time. Her first book was published a year after she completed her master’s degree.

Alison currently has a trio of novels published by Darkstroke. The first, Mine, is a domestic drama set in 1960s London based on real events in her family. She is the only person who can tell this particular story. Exploring themes of class, ambition and sexual politics, Mine shows how ordinary people can make choices that lead them into extraordinary situations.

The Legacy, a drama set in London in 1969, was inspired by a scene in Mine, and explores how an unexpected legacy can be both a blessing and a curse. The Legacy looks at themes of greed and expectations, and the lengths people will go to when they are desperate.

The Hidden, available from September 2021, is a romantic suspense that picks up the story of one of the characters in The Legacy. Set in Montana in 1973, two wounded, damaged people are forced together, each guarding their secrets. Can they learn to trust each other? And will their nightmares ever end?

Alison teaches creative and life-writing, runs workshops and retreats with Imagine Creative Writing Workshops(www.imaginecreativewriting.co.uk) as well as working as a freelance editor. She is a member of the Society of Authors and the Romantic Novelists’ Association.

She lives in Somerset, within sight of Glastonbury Tor.
