1.When and where do you prefer to write?
I work as a proofreader and editor, so I often write in the evening when I’m finished with other projects. I usually write at home, but sometimes I go to a coffee shop for a change of scenery. It’s a cliche but it really works to clear the mental cobwebs.
2. Do you have a certain ritual?
I usually type, but sometimes if I’m trying to find the perfect wording, I start by writing a section on paper, and then I transfer it to my laptop. Something about paper gives me a fresh creative perspective. I write in pencil. Somehow the impermanence of being able to erase and rewrite gives me confidence.
3.Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?
I’m a hot drink aficionado. I love a good cup of Earl Grey tea to get the creative juices flowing.
4. What is your favourite book?
Till We Have Faces by CS Lewis
5. Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?
Yes, I’m working on a fantasy novel.
6. Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
Rarely in the specific sense, but in the general sense, what I observe in people becomes aspects of my characters and helps them to be more realistic.
7. Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
I always have something like a Field Notes notebook with me in case I want to jot something down.
8. Which genre do you not like at all?
I can’t think of one. I can get into almost anything if it’s written in an engaging way.
9. If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
I’ve actually just submitted my part of a manuscript that will also feature my dear friend author Lyndsay Faye, whose work I hugely admire. I was delighted to have a chance to feature with her.
10. If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
I haven’t been to England in a few years, and I would like to go back and retrace Sherlock Holmes’s
steps. Reading the original stories is one thing, but there’s nothing like being there in person and walking where he walked.
