Missing Girl at Frozen Falls by Leslie Wolfe / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @LWNovels

She lay in the frosted grass behind Frozen Falls. Her eyes were wide open, and the wind blew her hair, ash-blond locks reflecting the blue sky. Her face, beautiful even in death, was pale, as if the bitter cold from the mountain had drained the color from her cheeks.

On a crisp autumn day in the small town of Mount Chester, Detective Kay Sharp comes face-to-face with the past she has spent the last decade running from. Her ex-husband, Brian, has been accused of murder.

Seeing Brian brings a flood of painful memories—he betrayed her in the worst possible way. Yet despite her heartbreak, Kay is willing to put her career on the line to prove his innocence.

Brian is accused of killing Kay’s former best friend, Rachel—the woman he cheated on Kay with, getting her pregnant. The blood drains from Kay’s face; she received a voicemail from Rachel two days ago. “I hope you’ll forgive me,” she’d said, her voice fraught with tears. “I know I have no right, but I need you.” Kay’s stomach plummets. By the time she called back, Rachel was already dead. Could Brian really be the murderer?

Kay faces pressure from her crime team, who don’t want her working on an investigation so close to home. But she’s willing to risk everything—she vows to get justice for Rachel.

When Kay visit’s Rachel’s mother, she uncovers a heart-stopping discovery that makes the case even more critical: Rachel’s eight-year-old daughter, Holly, is missing. Could the little girl still be alive?

Up against the most complex—and most personal—case of her career, can she save precious Holly before it’s too late? And will Kay’s determination to find out the truth lead to justice—or be her undoing?

Review

They say once a cheater, always a cheater and I believe that. Does that mean that they are capable of doing worse things than that, like killing for instance? I believe that’s possible too. After all killers do lie, cheat and deceive in order to try and stay out of jail. What happens though when your ex is turning himself in, hoping you will help him clear his name?

He has broken your heart, more than once, but you think you know him enough and you tell yourself that has been his worst crime. Even though you don’t really want him in your life at all, you decide you help as much as you can.

Has he told you everything though? Can a cheater be trusted or does he play a game? The deeper Kay digs, the closer she comes to the truth. Was she right in believing her ex or has he, once again, played her for a fool?

Every day I am still surprised at what people are willing to do to protect themselves and how cruel some of them can be. Some try to buy someone’s silence, but can you sleep on both ears than? Others pick a more ‘secure’ solution…

Sometimes the most charming people are the ones who always get what they want. People want to please them, are attracted to them, fall for them, but do they ever see the real person behind that dazzling smile, those piercing eyes and that glamorous exterior?

I really enjoy this series. Kay and Elliot are partners, but they are so different. Maybe that’s why they are such a good match. In this book they are forced to work separately, but are they really? An excellent series by an excellent storyteller. 5 stars

Thank you

Because we all need something to smile about!

She may be down but don’t count this determined single mum out just yet…

Nine years ago, Zoe Taylor returned from London to the quiet hamlet of Westholme with her tail between her legs and a bun in the oven. Where once her job as a journalist saw her tearing off to Paris at a moment’s notice after a lead, now the single mum covers the local news desk. At least, she did…until she’s unceremoniously let go.

When Zoe invites her friends over to commiserate, wine and whining soon turns into something more… and before the night is out she’s plotted her next step: The Good News Gazette.

Now, as a developer threatens to force Westholme into the twenty-first century, Zoe’s good news movement finds her leading a covert campaign as a community crusader. She may have started The Good News Gazette as a way to save herself, but she might just be able to save Westholme in the process…

Q&A

– When and where do you prefer to write?

In an ideal world, I’d write on a balcony in Playa de Palma, Majorca, looking out at the waves crashing onto the beach and breathing in that hot sea air. Writing in the real world is a slightly less relaxing affair. I work as an independent financial adviser during the day and have two children to see to when I get home, so I need to set my alarm for 5am to make sure I’m at the kitchen table and writing by 5.30am. This way, I’ll usually manage to fit in an hour of writing time before my son wanders down for a chat before breakfast.

I’ll often write late into the night once the children have gone to bed too. It’s not ideal, but at least it means I’ve learned to write to order, and can write pretty much anywhere, whenever I have a few minutes to spare.

– Do you have a certain ritual?

Not really – the only one I religiously stick to is making sure I always start my writing day with a cup of coffee next to me.

– Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?

I’m now starting to realise just how integral coffee is to my writing routine!

– What is your favourite book?

Gosh, that is such a difficult question to answer, as there are so many different books that I love for many different reasons.

I adore books that capture my attention and reel me in from the first moment. I recently read The Hating Game by Sally Thorne and thought it was witty and clever. Pretending: A Novel by Holly Bourne is another fantastic example of how to draw in readers.

There are many other books that have remained in my mind over the years, The Island by Victoria Hislop being one, Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner being another. And then, of course, there are the classics, with the wonderful Jane Austen leading the charge for women’s fiction. So, as you can see, I have so many favourites, I couldn’t possibly pick just one.

– Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?

I love romance in its many different forms, so it’s hard to imagine a book that didn’t include it somewhere. However, there are lots of other genres in which I’m also interested, so never say never is my motto.

– Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?

I wouldn’t dare! In fact, I make a conscious effort to ensure that the characters don’t resemble people I know, either in looks or in personality. I think basing characters on people I know would be the quickest way to lose friends.

That said, Zoe, the protagonist in The Good News Gazette was really created out of conversations I’ve had with friends over the years. She’s intelligent, caring, vulnerable and stronger than she knows – which sums up all of us at times.

– Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?

No – which means that any ideas are usually written down on scraps of paper and mainly lost or thrown away. Maybe that will be my New Year’s Resolution for 2023 – it will make a nice change from my usual ‘give up coffee and be a size 8’ pledges.

– Which genre do you not like at all?

I wouldn’t say I don’t like it, but I’ve never really been drawn to horror. I should probably try it, but it’s not up there on my ‘would love to read’ list.

– If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

Richard Branson, purely so that I could hang out on Necker Island for six months.

– If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?

After Necker Island, my next project would take me to Cuba. I’ve never been, but the combination of the food, the music and the history has me convinced that it would be a truly fascinating setting for a book.

Thank you

Murder in an Irish Castle by Verity Bright / #Spotlight #PublicationDay @bookouture @BrightVerity

A Lady Eleanor Swift Mystery #12

Irish whiskey, rolling green hills, a traditional Christmas feast and… a murder? Lady Swift will need the luck of the Irish to survive this holiday season!

Christmas, 1923. Lady Eleanor Swift has received a rather unexpected invitation to the village Christmas party in the tiny, rural hamlet of Derrydee in the west of Ireland. Eleanor is thrilled about exploring her ancestral roots at her late uncle’s estate and spending the festive season in a castle. Packing Gladstone the bulldog’s coziest Christmas jumper, they set off to the Emerald Isle with her butler Clifford in tow.

Arriving late at night, Eleanor and Clifford are shocked when they find a body sprawled in the snow on the winding country lane outside the estate. The local constable is immediately suspicious and all but accuses the pair of murder. This isn’t the warm Irish welcome Eleanor imagined!

Clifford is certain he recognises the poor fellow from the funeral of Eleanor’s uncle – but what was their connection? Undeterred by the villagers’ lack of gossip on the matter, Eleanor is determined to get justice for the victim. The man’s pockets are suspiciously empty of personal effects, but closer inspection reveals an old key hidden in the heel of his boot. Could this unlock more than one mystery for Eleanor?

But when a fire breaks out at the castle on Christmas Eve, an even bigger question looms: is someone out to ensure the family line dies with Lady Swift? And will Eleanor’s first Irish Christmas be her last?

Review

It had been a while since I read a book by this author and I was happy to meet DI Natalie Ward again.

She and her team are called when the body of a 14 year old girl Roxy has been found and at the same time we are introduced to a few characters who seem to hide a few things. But does that also means they are killers? What they most certainly are good in is not telling the truth which makes them even more suspicious.

The killer in the meantime does not waste time and when Roxy’s mom is found dead a few days later, Natalie and her crew are struggling to find connections. A lot of people are not prepared to come forward and the police has to dig deep in order to find the culprit.

Natalie works long days and most people would be happy to go home then and relax with their family. Natalie does not really look forward to go home. While she is doing everything she can to solve the cases, she counts on her husband David to look after their home and kids. David though is not doing a very good job and once again it’s Natalie who has to try and keep them together.

How long will she be able to do this? How long is she willing to do this? Is she ready to make a life changing decision or will they try and work it out?

This is a story that keeps you guessing until the last few pages. Not in a million years could I have unraveled this!

This book is not a good book. Oh no. This book is an excellent book. 😉 5 stars‘

Thank you

Review

This is the 3rd book in the series, but only the first one for me.

I did not know Ash Carter yet, but I was pleasantly surprised when I was introduced to him. He does not beat around the bush. He was in the military helping the police now. Even though nobody within the force believes or give him any assistance, he keeps on pouncing. He knows the lead he follows is the right one and with the help of Detective Sofia Mackenzie, he uncovers the truth. He has a big heart and he looks out for Sofia too and she is very grateful to him for that. 🙂

The author takes us to Cyprus, an island I have visited in the past too. It brings some memories when  you read about the places you have been to too. I did not know about the mines there, but I traveled by boat to Haifa and boy that was an experience. 🙂

It’s 1949 when the story begins and when I read that in the blurb I was a bit afraid. Afraid the book would have an old fashioned feel hanging over it, but it felt really modern. It made me even like the story more.

There is suspense, there is heart break, there are things that warmed my heart and of course there are baddies. A complete story in my opinion that I enjoyed a lot.

I have read one other book by this author before and I gave it 5 stars. I like this one even better, so the only thing I can do is give is 5+ stars. 😉

Thank you

Liopleurodon: The Master of the Deep by M.B. Zucker / #Extract #BlogTour @cathiedunn @MBZuckerBooks @MichaelZucker1

Liopleurodon ferox was the deadliest sea predator of all time, the king of the Jurassic ocean. This whale-sized reptile’s return to the early twentieth century triggers a geopolitical crisis in this new historical science fiction thriller. Former President Theodore Roosevelt foresees the threat the Liopleurodon would pose if it falls into the wrong hands. The race is on as Roosevelt leads the American effort to destroy it before the Kaiser’s Germany can turn it into a weapon.

***

***

Extract

Teddy Roosevelt battles the Liopleurodon during the climax, intervening as it preys upon Neville Chamberlain’s wedding yacht.

Roosevelt watched as the five-meter triangular head moved along the ocean’s surface. It first swam toward the Thüringen and then turned to attack Roosevelt’s boat.

“Keep a distance from the yacht!” Roosevelt shouted to the men behind him. He made a split-second calculation of weaponry and decided the harpoon gun was his best chance since it combined distance and power. The drawback was that it had to be reloaded. Roosevelt moved as fast as possible, loading another lance and cocking the weapon.

The Liopleurodon flapped his flippers, closing the distance to Roosevelt’s boat. Roosevelt aimed and fired. The harpoon overshot the Liopleurodon, which struck the boat. However, dodging the harpoon sacrificed the Liopleurodon’s speed and decreased his attack’s power. Roosevelt and his crew wouldn’t have known this as they spun along the ocean’s surface, feeling queasy as they slowed.

Roosevelt grit his teeth and changed tactics. He drew his sword. “Come on! Let’s settle this! You and me!”

The pliosaur approached once more, again attacking on the Atlantic’s surface. Roosevelt marveled at the Liopleurodon, envious of his power as his three-meter jaws opened. Roosevelt was cocked, screaming and lunging with his sword, stabbing the top of the Liopleurodon’s mouth. Blood burst from where the sword struck.

The Liopleurodon shrieked and Roosevelt surged with joy. The adversaries moved in opposite directions as if on cue, the Liopleurodon raising his head to escape and Roosevelt pulling back to strike again.

“What fun!” Roosevelt shouted as he swung for the Liopleurodon’s throat, already bleeding from the harpoon wound. Roosevelt missed and the Liopleurodon turned to submerge.

Roosevelt took a second to catch his breath, careful not to lose his balance with his pegleg. He knew the Liopleurodon was done playing with him. That was fine. Roosevelt’s brain raced as he calculated ways to score a mortal blow. He needed to access a weak point so he could stab the reptile to death. Roosevelt couldn’t let the Liopleurodon dictate the terms. No amount of stabbing the Liopleurodon’s mouth would kill it. He had to access someplace more vulnerable. If the Liopleurodon did as he predicted, such an opportunity was imminent.

He turned to his men. “Brace yourselves!”

Thank you
