Buz was no longer bigger, faster and smarter than the other bears. But he was much wiser now. He still loved to lie in the field of flowers and watch the clouds and the birds and the flutterbys. But he had learned that we cannot ever own another of God’s creatures. No matter how many times he had tried to possess a flutterby, no matter how gently he had grasped its wings, the flutterby was never quite the same afterwards. So now, with his whiskers turning silver, Buz would lie on his back in the flowers and just extend his paw, palm down. He would watch as the flutterbys began to trust him, as they began to know that he was their friend. And they would come, one by one, and land on the back of his arm as they fluttered from flower to flower. Buz was so happy. Now he could look at these wonderful creatures as closely as he liked. He could talk with them and be their friend, as long as he let them be free to choose when and where they would land. And as long as he let them fly away when they chose to, they could live to return and visit with him another day!
