Seven Letters by Sinéad Moriarty / #Review @bookouture @sinead_moriarty

How can a family live without its heart?

Sarah is a loving mum to seven-year-old Izzie, a doting wife to stressed-out husband Adam and a best friend to her sister Mia, and is also pregnant with her second child.

When she suddenly collapses and slips into unconsciousness, it’s the first time the family will have to face life without their beloved Sarah, the glue who holds them together. How will they ever explain to Izzie that her mother might not make it. And can Sarah’s unborn baby possibly survive?

As Sarah’s condition worsens, the family begins to fall apart as they argue about Sarah’s treatment. Mia finds herself walking through her sister’s home trying to feel close to her again. And there she stumbles across the letters – seven in total – one for each year of Izzie’s life so far, written on each of her birthdays.

It is as if Sarah had planned for a day when she might not be around to tell her daughter just how much she loves her. But while Mia wonders if Sarah will ever have a chance to write an eighth letter, the family is forced to make a heart-breaking decision that will change them forever.

Review

The last couple of years, I almost solely read thrillers and crime stories, but form time to time I throw in a real tear jerker or a romantic comedy. This time I had my eye on this emotional story and I most certainly enjoyed it.

When yuu read a thriller it’s often no so easy to figure out who the culprit was. In this kind of books you more or less can guess which path the author will take you on. In this case though, it is not so straight forward. Not at all…

It must be devastating to have a person you love being brought to the hospital. Even though it’s sometimes only for something quite simple, you worry because you want them getting well and coming home soon again.

What if it is something more serious, even life threatening?

It’s already hard for adults to deal with this, but what if a young girl is involved. How to tell her? Or should you keep it a secret how dire the situation is? It might divide the family in two, even rip them apart at times when they should be there for each other…

As usual, different people have different opinions about that question. You have to respect the decision made by the next of kin even though you don’t see eye to eye.

I could see both sides and admit they both had strong points, but Adam was standing too close to see the right picture. The rest of the family tried to make him see things from their point of view, but he was too focused on one thing and that muddled up his common sense big time.

It certainly is a story filled with lots of sadness, but also with love and realizing how lucky you are even though you sometimes don’t see it like that anymore. On the other hand, I felt sometime the story was a bit too slow paced and kept going on about the same things too many times. It got a bit on my nerves and took away some of the emotions I should have kept my focus on.

Anyways, if I look beyond that, it still was a very good book. 4 stars

Thank you

About the author

Sinéad was born and raised in Dublin where she grew up surrounded by books. Her mother is an author of children’s books. Growing up, Sinead says she was inspired by watching her mother writing at the kitchen table and then being published. From that moment on, her childhood dream was to write a novel.

After university, she went to live in Paris and then London. It was at the age of thirty, while working as a journalist in London that she began to write creatively in her spare time – after work, at lunch times … and, truth be told, during work hours.

After a couple of years toying with ideas, she joined a creative writing group and began to write The Baby Trail. The bitter-sweet comedy of a couple struggling to conceive hit a nerve in publishing circles. It was snapped up by Penguin Publishing in the UK and Ireland and has, to date, been translated into twenty languages.

Since writing The Baby Trail, Sinead has moved back to Dublin where she lives with her husband, two sons and baby girl.

Death on Clevedon Beach by Betty Rowlands / #Review @bookouture @BettyRowlandsFP

A Sukey Reynolds Mystery Book 10

A seaside town, scrumptious ice cream… mysterious murder?

Sukey Reynolds is back from holiday, feeling happy and relaxed. She and a friend have been touring the French coast, enjoying the wine and cheese, and soaking up the sun in Brittany. She has barely unpacked her bags when she is sent back to the seaside but, this time, not for fun…

Sukey arrives at the charming coastal town of Clevedon, where a woman’s body has been washed up on the sandy beach. Her identity is a mystery, but Sukey is determined to find out how she ended up there and who exactly she is.

The police are at their wits’ end, and with no leads or suspects, Sukey decides to leaf through old cases. She is shocked to realise this woman is not the first to turn up on the shore and even finds a link between the cold cases: several of the murder suspects had the same decorative tattoo inked on their skin. After some further investigating, she realises the distinctive symbol means ‘death’.

Her superiors scoff at her theory, so it’s up to Sukey to prove them wrong and find the devious killer herself. From tattoo parlours to the music halls, she has no shortage of places to investigate. But can she uncover the true culprit, and the identity of the mystery woman, before they strike again?

Review

As I said in my review about the previous boo,k; I felt like I lost the light-heartedness of the series. Yes, a police procedural can be light-hearted, because this series is catalogued as a coy mystery one.

I am happy to say, I saw a change. It was more like the books of the beginning of the series. I always have liked Sukey. That has not changed, but I feel like she cannot be herself anymore. In the beginning she was a SOCO, trying to solve the murders and not staying between the lines. She did what she felt was best and not really thinking about or taking in consideration what it could mean for her job or her career.

Now I feel like she has to put her foot or even her feet on the brake, because she is a DC now. She cannot follow her hunches anymore. She can share them, but often is a bit afraid to talk about them because she fears the reactions of her superiors or colleagues.

She seems happy with her career and the move, but I think she misses her former life even if she does not talk about it.

So yes, the atmosphere was better again, but in my opinion the revelations were a bit far fetched and it felt like they were written in order to find an end to the story and not because it was the normal flow.

I will miss Sukey and Fergus, but maybe it’s time to say goodbye?

If I leave these feelings out, I still can say the author, overall, wrote a great book. 4 stars

Thank you

Death at the Library by Betty Rowlands / #Review @bookouture @BettyRowlandsFP

A Sukey Reynolds Mystery Book 9

Toasted crumpets, a country house… and a curious murder?

Sukey Reynolds is invited to an evening at her local library to hear Jennifer Cottrell, a noted novelist, speak about her latest book. But instead of an interesting event attended by the author’s fans, a woman in the audience, Wendy Downie, accuses Jennifer of killing her lover. Before a shocked Sukey can go after her, she flees into the night. The very next day, Jennifer is found dead…

The police chase after Wendy, convinced she must have attacked Jennifer. But they find that she too has been killed – in the grounds of Jennifer’s beautiful manor. Why was she at Jennifer’s house? Are all of their suspects going to disappear?

With the police running around in circles, Sukey decides to do some sleuthing on her own. Looking closely at Jennifer’s household and acquaintances, Sukey wonders who could have wanted her dead? The homely housekeeper, the gloomy groundsman or the secretive secretary?

A dog’s lead and a pair of dirty boots direct Sukey to the truth, but will she be able to let her detective colleagues know who the culprit is, before the devious villain realises they’ve been rumbled?

Review

Book 9 featuring Sukey and the series is still very entertaining. She has moved house and changed her career since the beginning and although she is a police officer now, I liked her more in the role of SOCO. Cozy mysteries for me mean that the sleuth is an amateur whether they are writers, florists, bakers,… I know a SOCO is working for the police but is not an officer so it still counts as an amateur. Now she is a DC and it is her job to help to solve murder cases.

I still like the series, but it takes away a bit of the charm for me.

Anyway, Sukey and her colleagues have a heavy cases on their hands and they do not seem to be able to find the culprit. That’s when the DCI decides they need help, but are they really helpful? In the end it’s more or less the killer who cannot keep quiet anymore and they reveal themselves.

I was a likable story most certainly, but not my favorite. It was written very well and the author once again managed to keep me in the dark until the very end. But I miss the atmosphere from the earlier books in the series. It felt more fun. Now it’s really means business and I feel like the cozy part has been left out a bit.

In a nutshell, a good new installment, but it misses a bit of the warmth I like in cozy mystery books. 4 stars

Thank you

The Family Reunion by Karen King / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @karen_king

She’s the daughter you never knew… But how far will she go to get the life she never had?

Today I’m hosting a family party. One that’s different to every celebration we’ve had before. Because I’ve invited my secret daughter to it.

I’ve never forgiven myself for abandoning her as a baby, with just a scrawled note tucked into her soft yellow blanket, saying her name was Hope.

As soon as she reached out, I knew I had to meet her. My family all seem ready to accept her with open arms, their forgiveness a blessing I barely deserve. And I dare to believe that maybe we are all going to have a happy ending after all.

So I try to put all those small, strange things that have been happening to me in recent weeks out of my mind. The missing money, my lost charm bracelet, the broken window, the fire…

But as the drinks are poured and everyone’s talking animatedly, I hear a knock at the door. And something in my heart tells me this family is about to be torn apart. And there’s nothing I can do to stop it…

Review

Sometimes when you are young, something very devastating can rock your world. It does not only effect you, but the rest of your family too. They change and not for the better and you run, run into the arms of someone you fall hard for and they convince you they feel the same way too. But that’s not what it seems like when you are on your way to tell them something important and see what they are capable of…

You run again, away from them this time and you do what you have to do even though it breaks your heart in one million pieces at least.

You cannot turn back the clock, but years later, you decide the time has come; Time to reach out …

But how will your environment react to this…?

You want to do the right thing, but it seems like things are getting worse. Who is doing this to you or is it you loosing your mind?

And then there is still that ghost from the past. Your biggest fear is them entering your life again, making sure you keep their secret…

I really enjoyed this book. I had an inkling, but I was still not sure. I felt it was too obvious on the one hand, but on the other hand, it felt like it was the only option.

Did I score a goal or did I miss the ball completely? One guess… Indeed, I was wrong. 😉

It was a story about a manipulator playing games to get what they wanted, people lying and cheating and the main focus was on family. But as you know, sometimes things are not what they seem to be at all.

I liked it. 5 stars

Thank you

I am from the North of England but now live very happily in Glasgow with my American husband. Both my children have left home (one to London and one to Berlin) which may explain why I am finally writing. The In-Laws by Laura Wolfe / #Spotlight #PublicationDay @bookouture @LauraWolfeBooks

I peered over the ledge with my heart in my throat. A pop of color caught my eye – I would recognize that jacket anywhere. The body I knew so well lay still, torso twisted one way, head facing the other…

I’d planned this trip to the gorgeous, remote Michigan woodlands as a last-ditch attempt to help strengthen Pete and our families’ bond before the wedding of our dreams. Instead, it has turned into a nightmare that I can’t seem to wake up from. Anger, resentment, and heated arguments weren’t at all what Pete and I had imagined, even less so the horror of discovering a dead body…

Looking around the campsite at my terrified family and future in-laws, I realize that someone on this trip has been keeping secrets from me. What could be dangerous enough to kill for? But then again, I also have secrets of my own, something that if known, could be deadly. The only thing I know for certain is that the murderer is ruthless enough to do anything to keep their story hidden.

Who will be next to pay the ultimate price?
