1. When and where do you prefer to write?
I don’t have a preference as to when I write. Often I’ll think about what’s going to happen next when I’m swimming or walking or driving or about to go to sleep. Once I’ve got that straight in my mind I’ll write it the next chance I get.
As to where, I have my own home office (posh name for a box room). It’s set up to suit me, with everything I need to hand, and a kneeling chair, so I’m comfortable.
2. Do you have a certain ritual?
Nope, no ritual at all. But like many other writers, I’m really good at procrastinating. I’ll say that I need to clear these emails, or sort that task out first . . . but once I start writing, everything else gets forgotten.
3. Is there a drink or some food that keeps you company while you write?
I usually have a mug of tea on the go, Earl Grey by preference. And I’ll very rarely turn down chocolate, but I don’t normally have it immediately to hand when writing.
4. What is your favourite book?
What, just one? If you insist, I think it would be Winne-the-Pooh by A A Milne. I’ve loved that since I was a child and I have several different editions. There’s a children’s book referred to in Strand of Faith (book 1 in the Choices and Consequences series) and, although it isn’t named, in my head that’s Winnie-the-Pooh.
5. Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?
Yes, I’d write in whatever genre the story I’m telling needs. At the moment I’ve also got a non-fiction project on the go, based on letters written to my great grandfather by his nephew.
6. Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
Not directly, but I can see characteristics of people I know in my characters. Someone I know might contribute to several different characters, and equally one character might have traits from two or three different people I know.
7. Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
No, but I do make notes on my phone sometimes. Several of those have made it into the Choices and Consequences series.
8. Which genre do you not like at all?
Scary stuff. I read for enjoyment, relaxation and escapism. I don’t want to be scared.
9. If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
Choosing anyone, it would have to be Neil Gaiman. But that’s setting the bar very high. Of the indie authors I’m reading at the moment it would be Annette Marie. I really enjoy her Steel and Stone, and Guild Codex series.
10. If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
At the moment, Canada. I haven’t been there since I was a child, and I’d love to explore the country again. My father lived there during WW II so I’d like to see the places he went. Also, I’m a maple syrup addict.

Rachel J Bonner is the author of the four book Choices and Consequences series, the first of which, Strand of Faith, is due out in November 2018.
Getting a degree in engineering, followed by a career in accountancy is probably not a conventional path to becoming an author, particularly in paranormal romance. Rachel says that, although accountancy isn’t anything like as boring as everyone thinks, writing is a lot more fun. When not writing, she can be found walking in the beautiful countryside near where she lives, which has influenced much of the scenery in her books, or shooting things with her local archery club. Target shooting only, honest. Nothing to worry about.
She also enjoys swimming, eating chocolate chip cookies and growing aromatic herbs, especially thyme and rosemary. It’s no coincidence that her heroine likes the same things.
