About the Author

The author is a full-time triple board-certified physician who started writing dramatic medical romances after 20 years in the trenches of health care. She promises she never had sex in a call room – the mattresses are not comfortable – or had a fistfight with a patient – though she did work as a fight doc at the Octagon.

She writes the MetroGeneral Downtown series that tackles the personal and professional challenges facing our front-line providers. Her stories have the drama of Grey’s Anatomy, the comedy of Scrubs, the sexiness of Outlander, and the medical details of Forensic Files. They feature fast, witty dialogue, strong women with goals, sexy heroes and quirky ensemble casts.

When not working or writing, she is a brown belt in judo, an avid reader, and an attending surgeon in stuffed animal veterinary medicine for her six kids. (No one trusts her husband’s medical skills because he’s just a lawyer.)

No one ever talks about what happened …

Summer 1971, Del Munro, a single mother of four, is struggling to make ends meet when Mother Franklin, a traveling evangelist, offers to take her daughters to the beach in Savannah.

For nine-year-old Willie June and seven-year-old Glory, restless at the end of a long, hot summer in Charlotte, it’s a dream come true. To their beleaguered mother, it’s a much-needed reprieve.

But what seemed like a blessing soon turns into a nightmare when the girls are pressed into service by the morbidly obese Mother Franklin whose needs are as outsized as her ambitions.

When the girls fail to return, Del, evasive about the details of her arrangement with Mother Franklin, panics. People begin to wonder if instead of sending her daughters on vacation, she sold them to the evangelist.

Luther was Mother Franklin’s driver. At least that’s how he thought of himself. He spent a lot of time waiting around on her; her being so big and all meant she was a slow mover. He’d stand for what seemed like hours waiting for the old woman in one churchyard or another. This time of year, when the grass was brown and crackly and clover was the only thing showing green on the ground, he would kick at it with his shoe, grinding the clover until it disappeared in the red dirt.

That’s what that fat old woman was doing to him. Grinding him down. It wasn’t like she was really paying him. He was just part of her—what’d she call it?—retinue. My driver. A plate for my driver, she’d demand and the church ladies always did provide. It wasn’t begging. But it was charity. What he’d like was a little cash in his pocket. Even when they pulled into a filling station she’d get the bills out of her black square of a pocketbook and not let go of them ’til he was done pumping. Two dollars, she’d bawl in her wheezy old voice, and not a drop more!

Even though technically the station wagon wasn’t his, Luther watched over it like a jealous lover, noticing every little hint of trespass—fingerprints on the windows, mud on the floor, crumbs. He kept a little whisk broom under the driver’s seat and a red rag, worn soft, that he folded in half and then in thirds and tucked up under the visor. Every time they stopped for gas, he swept the floorboard on the driver side and wiped down the dash. When Mother Franklin was doing her business, he’d whisk her side of the car as well.

He was sure this dust-covered, paneled wagon would do better if they just filled it up to the top of the tank every once and again. He wasn’t anything more than a shade tree mechanic but he knew where to poke around under the hood and it was looking like there were going to be some serious problems soon enough.

The Hacker Chronicles, Book 2

Saturday, the second day of July, in the year of our Lord, 1644, will be a day long remembered by the men and women committed to ending the reign of a tyrannical King. For on this day, the forces of Charles the First were crushed on the bloody fields of Marston Moor.

The calamitous defeat forces the increasingly desperate Royalists to intensify their attempts to bring about the immediate demise of their Parliamentarian enemies. This includes devising an audacious plan to assassinate the man they believe is key to the war’s outcome.

With the plotters ready to strike, Francis Hacker, one of Parliament’s most loyal soldiers, becomes aware of the conspiracy. With little time to act, he does everything in his power to frustrate their plans. But, alas, things start to unravel when brave Hacker finds himself pitted against a ruthless and cunning mercenary, a man who will resort to anything to achieve a ‘kill’.

Extract

Lady Lucy Hay, a woman who shares her bed and the secrets of the State with whomever she deems fit, is someone who has not been in my thoughts for a long time.

I made her acquaintance when I was seeking to persuade the princes Rupert and Maurice to accept the English throne and become de facto allies of Parliament.

Over several months, we formed a bond that served both sides well. During one notable occasion at Banbury Castle, Lady Lucy revealed to me some of the arts and ways of spying, including how she hides secret communiqués from prying eyes.

The conversation was fascinating and illuminating, albeit I never thought for one moment that it would ever come in useful.

Today, however, is when I will put this knowledge to the test. For I intend to send my brother a message of hope that I will conceal in a raw egg, a technique refined by Lady Lucy and frequently used to her profit.

By ten o’clock in the morning, I am ready to begin.

I have allowed the three eggs to be soaked in vinegar for the last couple of hours. The effect has been quite startling: the shell has softened significantly without breaking, just as Lady Lucy told me it would.

Holding one of them as delicately as possible, I take the knife and press the blade into the shell. Instantly it yields, and some of the egg white oozes out of the incision. It is through this opening I will insert a message for Rowland.

I put the egg down gently on the tray and reach for the paper. I will only need a small amount of velum to write my instructions, which will be brief and to the point.

As I extend my hand, my cuff clips the tray, sending the contents crashing loudly to the floor. The commotion forces Kathleen to call upstairs to enquire whether I am in difficulty. I quickly reassure her I am fine and then set about the business of recovering the eggs and the tools that will serve me this day.

I look to the floor and see the crushed shells of at least two of the eggs. I groan aloud and hit the table with my fist. It would seem my clumsiness has jinxed the whole venture. I get down on my knees in the confined space and look closer. There is little light, the room cast in near-permanent semi-darkness.

After a few seconds, I find the third egg. It is undamaged, having rolled away and nestling under a nearby table. I examine it quickly, seeking signs of breakage. But I am in luck as it appears to be undamaged and in near-perfect condition.

Once again, I take the knife in my right hand and hold it against the bright white shell. It’s time to try again, all the while being acutely aware I don’t have a second chance. I will either succeed or fail.

After a few seconds of the utmost concentration and with sweat pouring off my forehead, the knife has done its work. A perfect aperture has been cut into the egg’s supple shell.

It’s now time to insert the message for the eyes of my beloved brother.

As the feather of the quill dances to the tune of a forgettable melody, I drill out the words I formulated in the early hours…

“Forgive me, brother, for any part I may have played in your misfortune. Be assured, I intend to find a way to make good your rescue this evening, at seven o’clock. Remain vigilant and pass on any knowledge you wish to share to the bearer of this message. He will ensure I receive it. Francis.”

I have done my best to write the script legibly, but as small as I can, ensuring the width of the communiqué is no bigger than the tip of my little finger, while its overall length will fit snugly into the chamber of the egg. To protect it, I have wrapped the sheaf with another page of vellum.

Only when I am happy with everything do I insert it into the neatly formed cut, applying pressure as carefully and skilfully as I can.

Once the paper is safely inside the shell, I place the egg into the tankard located by the post of my bed. The cold water erases the evidence of my manipulation and interference by closing the slit in the shell almost perfectly. Now, should anyone take an interest in the egg, it will almost be impossible for the naked eye to detect any signs of tampering. It will appear to be nothing more than a simple egg. Or at least that is my hope.

After a few minutes, and with my self-doubts intensifying, I start to have concerns about the validity and sense of the whole exercise.

I stand and walk over to the table, where I pick up the egg and take it to a candle that is flickering wildly as the draught from the door breathes life into its golden flame. I check it thoroughly once again for any apparent signs of trauma. To my utter amazement, I can find none.

Before Baculus and Aquila could conclude their conversation, the flap of the tent suddenly burst open. Out of the corner of his eye, Atticus could see a tall figure marching towards them. Aquila’s startled expression and flustered demeanour was in marked contrast to the beaming smile that Atticus saw fleetingly flash across Baculus’ face. The visitor strode up to the table and nodded towards Aquila.

“Lucius.”

If not immaculately turned out, the blood-stained armour that sat atop his legate’s uniform still clearly displaying the signs of the fighting with which he had evidently been engaged, he was still an imposing individual with the presence of one used to carrying authority. Aquila rose to greet his new arrival, though not at all warmly.

“Gaius. I was not expecting the pleasure of a visit from one of my fellow officers today.”

The visitor shrugged.

“Julius intended to visit yesterday but as you know, some of us were unfortunately engaged elsewhere.”

The barely disguised sleight was not lost on Atticus, nor it seemed on Aquila. Before he could reply, however, the visitor turned and addressed Atticus and Plautius directly.

“Forgive me, gentlemen, I am Gaius Trebonius, Legate and commander of the VIIIth Legion. I assume, Lucius, that this is the individual to whom we owe a debt of thanks for his exploits yesterday?”

Aquila looked flustered.

“Yes, this is Legionary Capito and his centurion Plautius.”

Trebonius smiled.

“Then it seems I have arrived just in time to add my thanks and those of the legions engaged yesterday to your own. That is, I assume, the purpose of this gathering?”

“W…w…why, of course,” stammered Aquila. “I was just, erm… telling Capito how… grateful I was for the manner in which he had executed my plan.”

If the wind had been taken out of his sails by Trebonius’ arrival, Aquila had recovered quickly. He really was every bit the politician Baculus had described.

“Excellent. You know how much Julius admires initiative, especially when it’s exercised by those in the ranks.”

“Indeed, Gaius, although in this case the initiative was mine.”

“Of course, of course,” replied Trebonius a little dismissively, “though you know that is the least expected of us, Lucius. Even if it is displayed a little later than those of us engaged in the fighting might have wished.”

It was Aquila’s turn to bristle.

“What are you suggesting, Trebonius?”

The switch to the formal term of address suggested Aquila was rather more rattled than he was letting on, thought Atticus, who was by now beginning to relax a little and enjoy the discomfort that Aquila was evidently experiencing. The same discomfort that just minutes before he and Plautius had been experiencing.

“Lucius, Lucius, I meant no offence,” Trebonius replied calmly. “We have all seen failures of command and all experienced the types of delay that can occur in the communication of orders. You may rest assured that Julius is entirely clear which it was on this occasion.”

Leaving that thought hanging and ignoring the look of anger on Aquila’s face, Trebonius turned back to Plautius and Atticus.

“So how has Legate Aquila decided to reward you?”

From over Trebonius’ shoulder, Baculus responded.

“The legate had not yet decided his approach, sir.”

“Ah, Baculus, I had quite forgotten that you were there. It is good to see you again.”

Baculus nodded a greeting in return, with what Atticus thought looked suspiciously like a look of satisfaction on his face, though he was quick to hide that as Aquila turned to face him.

“My first spear is correct, Gaius, and I am in no rush to conclude matters. I think my deliberations will wait until tomorrow.”

“Nonsense,” said Trebonius firmly. “My guess is that Julius will want us all on the march tomorrow if we are going to hunt down what’s left of the rabble we saw off yesterday. Besides, you know him, always happy to take an opportunity to boost morale.” Aquila, now clearly quite angry at the unexpected turn of events, had moved around his desk in an attempt to reassert control.

“Well, that’s as maybe, but this is my legion, not yours, and you would do well to remember that.”

Trebonius took a step forward, closing the gap between himself and Aquila in a deliberate move to emphasise his superior stature.

“And you would do well to remember whose army it is.”

Atticus wondered if the two senior officers had quite forgotten that the three soldiers were still there.

“You speak for Caesar now,” enquired Aquila with an air of cynicism.

“No, my friend, but I believe I know what he would expect.”

From outside the tent, a sudden flurry of activity and shouted commands accompanied the arrival of a number of horsemen.

Trebonius smiled.

“But no need to speculate. You can ask him yourself. I believe that might have been him and his escort just arriving.”

A look of horror flashed across Aquila’s face and he hurriedly fussed with his uniform before scurrying out to present himself to his visitor. Trebonius smiled and gestured Plautius forward.

“Centurion, I suggest that you go and round up as many of your men as you can and have them report here immediately in parade order.”

“Yes, sir,” Plautius replied, saluting swiftly.

“Oh, and, Centurion, have them try and look their best. It’s not every day they will get to parade before their general.”

Thinking about just how rough he had looked after the night before, Atticus could only imagine how difficult it was going to be getting the century into the kind of shape that Plautius would want. He knew he would, though, doubtless with a little help from his vine cane and the persuasive assistance of Rescius. Atticus watched as Trebonius and Baculus clasped forearms in greeting.

“Thank you, sir. You know that I will always do my duty come what may, but that man is not easy to serve.”

Trebonius nodded.

“I can imagine, and this episode won’t improve his demeanour any, I’m sure. He’s wise enough to know that he’ll need your counsel as first spear. It’s not an accident he was assigned to your legion, but be careful.”

Baculus nodded.

“It’s Capito who is going to have to be careful, I suspect.”

“Ah, yes, Legionary Capito,” said Trebonius, placing an arm around Atticus’ shoulder. “It may be best you keep something of a low profile after this, but first, are you ready to meet your general?”

About the Author

A history graduate, Nick enjoyed developing the skills that would stand him in good stead during the extensive research he conducted prior to writing his novel. Whilst the ancient world unfortunately didn’t feature to any extent in his history degree, (the result of failing miserably to secure the A level grades that would have permitted greater choice) he maintained a lifelong and profound in-terest in ancient history and especially the Roman Empire, continuing to read avidly as he embarked on a career in HR. Over the next 30 years or so Nick oc-cupied a variety of Senior/Director roles, most recently in the NHS. Unsurpris-ingly, writing in these roles was largely confined to the prosaic demands of

Board papers but Nick never lost the long-harboured belief, motivated by the works of writers such as Robert Fabbri, Robyn Young, Anthony Riches, Simon Scarrow, Matthew Harffy and Giles Kristian, that he too had a story to tell. When he was presented with a window of opportunity c3 years ago he took the decision to place his career on hold and see if he could convert that belief into reality.

Nick always knew that he wanted to set the novel against the backdrop of a sig-nificant event/period in Roman history. Looking to narrow that down to some-thing offering the potential for meaningful character and plot development, but that hadn’t already received exhaustive coverage, he settled on Caesars tumultu-ous occupation of Gaul. Spanning 8 years, the prolonged clash of cultures of-fered ample opportunity for the kind of dual perspective from which he was hoping to tell the story, whilst the violent conflict provided a wealth of exciting material to explore the changing fortunes of war and its impact at a personal level. The switching of allegiances, nations fighting for and against Rome also provided the potential for some intriguing plot lines. As his research unfolded, he was also struck by just how heavily the Roman psyche during this period was influenced by the scare they had received 50 years earlier when Germanic tribes invaded their territories and defeated their legions. Seeing references to the veterans of that war watching their sons and grandsons enlist for a similar campaign, he started to think about developing that link on both sides of the conflict. And so, the idea for the Conquest Trilogy was born.

In Bloody Dominions Nick has sought to produce a novel in which unfolding events are experienced and described from the perspective of protagonists on both sides of Caesar’s incursion into Gaul. Conscious that the role of women in Roman fiction, Boudica aside, is largely confined to spouse, prostitute or slave, Nick wanted to ensure that one of his lead characters was female and a promi-nent member of the warrior clan of her tribe. The novel is driven by these char-acters but the framework against which their stories unfold is historically accu-rate, featuring actual participants in Caesar’s campaign and drawing on real events as they occurred. As such Nick is genuinely excited about his characters and the story they have to tell.

Nick lives in Exeter with his two daughters and is currently juggling work as an Independent HR Consultant with writing the second novel in the Conquest Tril-ogy, Battle Scars.

Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

I try to be flexible, as I feel that’ll be a good skill for me to have as a writer in the future. So I’ve written in restaurants, during parties, in parks, on every vacation, and just about anywhere else I can think of. (Including during school—sorry, Mom! I couldn’t help it!)

But I actually prefer writing late at night at my desk!

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

Not really! I actually need something in the background … music, talk, a movie, etc. I struggle to work in silence because I get easily distracted.

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

Oh, I don’t know! I have some friends I’d love to co-write a book with, but if I ever do, it’ll be a long time in the future.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Either! But the bad one would definitely be more fun.

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

I would love to interview Keira Knightley, who is my favorite actress, or some of my favorite authors: Jane Austen, Gene Stratton-Porter, et cetera. But if I could interview any one person, living or dead, I would absolutely choose C.S. Lewis. I’d love the chance to talk to that man (Heaven goals, right?).

Where can I find you when you are reading?

Again, just about anywhere. But I’d say I usually read in my room on my bed!

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

Usually I’m hanging out with my husband or friends, watching TV, going on walks/hikes, and trying to balance all the other non-writing tasks related to running my author business!

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

Usually, “I hope there aren’t any errors!” I AM excited about it—don’t get me wrong. However, my mind is usually on the next step of the process.

How do you come up with a title for your book?

It can be challenging! Usually it takes me a bit. However, thankfully, in my genre there are some rather set ways to put together titles, so if I’m struggling, it’s not too hard to figure something out.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

I usually just trust my designer. She’s the professional here! Generally I’ll offer a few hints about the plot and setting, and she’ll do the rest. I almost never have to ask for another draft these days! She’s amazing. If you need a professional cover done, check out Carpe Librum Book Design. 🙂

About the Author

Kellyn Roth is a Christian historical womens fiction & romance author from North-Eastern Oregon who has independently published multiple novels, the most notable being The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy series. You should definitely call her Kell.

Kell lives on family-owned property outside an unmemorable but historical town with her parents, two little brothers, precious border collies, a dozen cows, and lots of chickens. She also possesses a classic, vintage aesthetic which does not at all speak to her country girl side, but such is life.

When not writing, Kell likes to blog, work as a virtual assistant for authors and other small business owners, and spend lavish amounts of money on Dairy Queen french fries. She also likes to talk about her books (and occasionally Keira Knightley) way too much. Youve been warned.

The Farmhouse by LB Stimson / #Interview #BookTour @zooloo2008 @stimsonink @QuestionPress

***

The house, for all of its solitude, seemed incredibly noisy

The Farmhouse, having stood against time and history for nearly 160 years in the Virginia countryside, was forgotten and abandoned until Kyle and Jenny Dowling moved in during the summer of 1972.

The Dowlings, married just a year, were struggling to repair their broken marriage. It was to be the perfect place, away from it all, to heal their relationship. Jenny would write and Kyle would tend to minor renovations. The rent was cheap.

The realtor warned them, however, against staying beyond the final days of fall.

Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

I usually write from mid-morning to early evening. I’d prefer to have a writing space set up in the spare bedroom but for now I mostly write at the dining table which also serves as my desk.

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

Yes. I find it difficult to have music playing (although I use music to influence the tone of my writing (I often play the piano in an effort to build imagery and emotions). I can tolerate the television if it’s on in another room.

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

That’s a difficult one. Susan Hill would be at the top of the list. The Woman in Black is one of my favorite stories. If I could time-travel, then Sheridan LeFanu would be a top choice.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

I’d have to go with the bad one as I’ve always been known as the quiet one who rarely makes a peep. It would be fun to see how someone might turn my personality on its head.

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

Well, for authors I would have liked to have interviewed Shirley Jackson and Victoria Holt. Two of my favorite movie directors are M. Knight Shyamalan and Guillermo del Toro. Every now and then I send a tweet out to Mr. del Toro in hopes he might take a look at one of my ghost stories. It’s a long shot I know.

Where can I find you when you are reading?

I usually read on the sofa in the living room.

Where can I find you wen you are not writing/reading?

I spend a lot of time exploring historical areas, especially cemeteries. I live in an area of Virginia that is surrounded by U.S. Civil War battles and other notable historical sites.

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

It’s always an adrenaline rush for me as it serves as physical proof of accomplishing something after months of work in creating it.

How do you come up with a title for your book?

Most of my book titles are from the places that inspire the book. One of my Southern Gothic book series that is set in New Orleans, for the most part, is titled after what I decided described my daughter’s altered hair color. I had been struggling with a title and then walking in the door it came to mind-A Pale Shade of Winter-winter and nature’s elements are key influencers throughout the book. I am working on my first historical fiction book which will not have a “place marker” title.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

I actually use my own photography if possible. I have a lovely model which graces two book covers and for The Farmhouse at Peace and Plenty, its cover is also from my own collection of photographs. If at all possible, I avoid stock imagery and if I do use it whether in a cover or promotional materials, I make sure to drastically alter it to fit my artistic style. Historical photos, that are beyond copyright requirements, are also a go to, especially for my ghost stories.
