Q&A
Did or do you like to read comic books/graphic novels? Which ones?
I don’t read them as much now, but when I was younger, I was a huge fan of the Elfquest comics, which were popular in the 1980s and 1990s.
Whom did you inherit your love for books/reading from?
Both my parents loved reading so much that my dad built bookshelves all over our house. We never had any shortage of books – everything from murder mysteries to classics like The Three Musketeers and the Narnia stories, to books on art history, religion, and anthropology. If I ever complained that I was bored, my parents would tell me “Go find something to read!”
When you need a murder victim or someone you can diagnose with a serious disease or someone who is involved in a fatal accident do you sometimes picture someone nasty you have met in real life and think ‘got you’ LOL?
Since I write romantic comedy, I don’t usually deal with murder victims or people with serious diseases. However, I have based a few of my nastier antagonists on real-life people (they don’t know this, of course!).
How do you come up with the names for your characters?
Sometimes the names just come to me, and other times I rely on the internet and search for popular names. I also have a baby-name book on a shelf by my computer.
Do write other things beside books (and shoppinglists 😉 )?
I used to have a blog where I posted weekly reviews/write-ups on musicals, which I called “Musical Mondays.” Back when I worked as an archaeologist, I was a contributing author to a tome entitled Serce Limani: An Eleventh-Century Shipwreck, where I wrote two articles about the glass remains uncovered from the wreck.
If your movie or series would be made from your books, would you be happy with the ‘based on’ version or would you rather like they showed it exactly the way you created it?
If I were lucky enough to have a movie or series based on my books, I’d be perfectly happy with the ‘based on’ version.
Who would you like/have liked to interview?
Since I have a background in archaeology, I’d love to have interviewed Mary Leakey, the famous archaeologist and paleoanthropologist who discovered some of the first fossils of early hominids in Eastern Africa. I remember watching documentaries about her when I was a kid and being fascinated by her life.
Do you have certain people you contact while doing research to pick their brains? What are they specialized in?
Yes, when I do research, I like talking to people who work in fields I’m not familiar with. For my second book, Red Velvet, my heroine works in graphic design, so I interviewed a friend’s daughter who has a degree in graphic design, to find out what my character would have studied in college. For White Wedding, I talked with a friend with years of experience in the catering business, since my hero works as a chef for a catering company.
Is there someone you sometimes discuss a dilemma with?
Yes, I have an ongoing group chat with two writer friends, where we brainstorm writing issues, talk our way through writer’s block, and discuss life in general.
What is more important to you: a rating in stars with no comments or a reviewer who explains what the comments they give are based on (without spoilers of course)
