Death Down the Aisle by Verity Bright / #SpotlightPost #PublicationDay @bookouture @BrightVerity

A Lady Eleanor Swift Mystery #11

The society wedding of the decade has everything: the blushing bride, beautiful flowers… and the groom arrested before he can walk down the aisle? Thank goodness Lady Swift is on the guest list!

Lady Eleanor Swift isn’t normally one for grand social occasions, but who can resist a wedding? Especially when it’s her old friend, Constance Grainger, marrying the most eligible bachelor in town, Lord Peregrine Davencourt. Eleanor is taking Gladstone the bulldog as her plus one, with a smart new bowtie to match her bridesmaid’s dress.

But the big day is ruined when the groom is arrested for murder before he makes it to the altar. In a baffling twist, it turns out he was already engaged to the lovely Daisy Balforth, who has been found dead at the local inn with Lord Davencourt kneeling over her. The gossip pages will have a field day!

The distraught bride-to-be asks Eleanor to clear her fiancé’s name, as she’s certain he wouldn’t hurt a fly. With help from handsome Detective Seldon, Eleanor examines the evidence. But she’s barely had time to write down her suspect list before Constance’s father is set upon by a bearded stranger on the golf course. Clearly there is more to this story than Eleanor first thought, but can she catch the real killer before the wedding turns into her wake?

The Boy in the Attic by Imogen Matthews / #SpotlightPost #PublicationDay @bookouture @ImogenMatthews3

Wartime Holland #3

Anna opened the letter with trembling hands. ‘My darling, if you’re reading this, I haven’t managed to unravel my parents’ secret. But you can. Will you finish the search for me, find out who they were, and who you really are?’

Nazi-occupied Holland, 1944. As soldiers patrol the streets, nursing student Ilse is only just surviving the terrible famine and increasingly violent German occupation. Though exhausted by her demanding work at a hospital far from home, she can’t help but notice Levi, the young man with the dark eyes watching the world silently from the abandoned house next door.

Then, early one morning, she finds him terrified and trembling with cold on the back doorstep. Levi’s Jewish family have been arrested and sent to a concentration camp, their likely fate all too clear. And now he needs her help.

So Ilse makes the most dangerous decision of her life, and takes Levi in. Hiding him away in her tiny attic room, he must remain concealed or risk almost certain death. But as the war worsens, keeping Levi a secret becomes ever more difficult, even as their mutual affection grows. And when a local German soldier becomes obsessed with Ilse, they fear their time – and luck – has run out…

London, present day. When Anna’s father dies, he leaves her a ticket to Amsterdam, a bent silver sixpence on a delicate silver chain, and a note begging her to complete the journey he was never able to. To the town where he was born, to find out once and for all who his parents were, and to discover their wartime fate.

Based on the author’s incredible family history, a totally devastating and ultimately uplifting story about a girl who risked everything, including her life, to save the man she loved.

About the author

Imogen Matthews writes novels based on true stories about the Netherlands during the German occupation in World War 2. Some stories she discovered by chance, others are based on her Dutch mother’s own experiences of hardship and survival during the Hunger Winter of 1944-45.

Her first novel, The Hidden Village, is set in the Veluwe woods, a beautiful part of Holland that Imogen has visited frequently over the past 30 years. It was in these woods that she discovered the story of the real hidden village which provided shelter in underground huts for Jews during WW2. Imogen retells the story of the hidden village with characters drawn from real life and from her imagination.

Within weeks of publication in 2017, The Hidden Village became an international bestseller, ranking at the top of a number Amazon’s most-read book lists.

Following on from The Hidden Village comes Hidden in the Shadows, which has the pace of a thriller yet is also a love story. It tells the story about two young people who are brutally torn apart and must find a way to be together against all odds.

Imogen’s third WW2 novel, The Girl Across the Wire Fence, is set in Amersfoort, Netherlands, and is based on the unforgettable tale of two young lovers who risked everything to keep hope alive in the very depths of hell – the little known Dutch concentration camp called Kamp Amersfoort.

My Thirty-First Year (And Other Calamities) by Emily Wolf / #SpotlightPost #BlogTour @RRBookTours1 @EmilyWolfAuthor @DeborahBrosseau

12 April 2022… Zoe Greene is approaching her 30th birthday not with celebrations in mind, but by recovering from an abortion, planning a divorce, negotiating family drama, and later, reentering the modern dating pool. Using humor and unfiltered truth (and Zoe’s favorite rock band, U2), Houston-based author Emily Wolf’s debut, My Thirty-First Year (And Other Calamities), illuminates the realities of womanhood, and connects to them through shared challenges, resilience, and hope.

“Years ago, I benefited from a safe and legal abortion. I didn’t need the abortion to save my life. I needed it to live my life—fully and freely. I want my women readers to reflect on or anticipate their twenties and thirties and be able to say something out loud, mourn something, laugh at it, or release it,” said Emily.

Exit Wounds by Annie O’Neill Stein / #SpotlightPost @CoriolisCo

Born to shanty Irish on one side and Park Avenue privilege on the other, Laura navigates a turbulent childhood filled with the alcohol-fueled abuse of her volatile father and her mother’s excessive drinking. As the middle child of three girls, she assigns herself the role of her mother’s protector, who dies when Laura is thirteen, leaving her heartbroken and adrift.

Insecure, anxious, and fearful, she tries drugs, random sex, and a sequence of lovers. Along the way she becomes a successful painter and has a bad first marriage. Nothing however seems to assuage her emptiness and her sense of loss. Eventually, she marries a caring man and has a loving daughter.  It is only at the end of her life and by way of an unusual and unexpected turn of events that she is finally able to make peace with herself, to let go of the feeling that she never really grieved, and said goodbye to her beloved mother, and to appreciate that though we work at love and acceptance, sometimes the most wonderful experiences in our lives come in unanticipated and unsought ways.

Review

When I mark a book as ‘read’ in Goodreads, I always throw a glance at the ratings. I am curious to know whether the other readers felt the same about a story as I did and what made them like or dislike it.

When I looked at the results for this book there were already 9 ratings and I was not surprised to see they all gave a 5 star rating. I am happy to add a tenth one, because as per usual I am charmed by her books.

I started by reading her cozy mystery books and I loved them. I was a big fan. Nowadays she writes collections of short stories, some even as short as only 100 words.

This collection has no limit. They all had a different length and when you are familiar with her writing style, you know they are great.

When you start one of her stories, you never know where she will lead you. Sometimes though, gradually, I guessed the direction she was going to take. Other times I was totally surprised by the outcome.

As per usual her stories can be funny, suspenseful or even a bit creepy and she can talk to you about family, love, friends,…, but one thing they all have in common: a punchline.

Another very entertaining book by this author. 5 stars

Thank you

Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

I do my most of my writing at home, generally mornings, sometimes evenings.

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

I prefer peace and quiet to write, though sometimes I put on some (preferably) instrumental music

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

I would have to raise the dead to get my first choices, but amongst the living … I think Stephen King would be fun to write with.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Don’t mind so long as I was the interesting one.

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

I would have liked to interview Ray Bradbury, Jim Thompson, and I would like to interview Lawrence Block

Where can I find you when you are reading?

I read at home, or down by a local lake, which is a place I often visit to jot down story ideas too

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

Down by the lake, possibly, or out walking generally, or at home playing my keyboard

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

Anxiety – what will other people make of it? What if nobody likes it, what if it isn’t any good and I’ve been fooling myself?

How do you come up with a title for your book?

I brainstorm and then agonise. Occasionally I wake up with a good title, or I’m out walking and a title just pops into my head. Titles are important, and they are often for me the starting point of the creative process, though not in every case. Sometimes they come later. I’ve learnt not to just sit around waiting for them.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

Usually with great difficulty. I try to think of a central image that conveys the book. Sometimes this is fairly obvious, but sometimes it is far from obvious, to me at least, and then it’s back to brainstorming.

Thank you

About the Author

Mark writes detective crime fiction, and psychological and supernatural thrillers. He is the author of the popular Tyler & Mills detective crime series set in Staffordshire. RED IS THE COLOUR was shortlisted for the 2018 Arnold Bennett Prize and begins with the grim discovery of a schoolboy who disappeared thirty years earlier. BLUE MURDER involves a missing singer and a murdered guitarist, elevating an obscure band to sudden fame and fortune. THE DEVIL WORE BLACK unveils the mystery of a crucified priest. The latest book in the series, THE SMELL OF COPPER, finds Tyler out on a limb as the detectives uncover high level police corruption. All the books can be read as standalone crime novels.

Other detective mysteries include THE BATHROOM MURDERS. A series of women are found hacked to death while taking a shower. This is the first in a new series set in Manchester, featuring female detective Charlie Reed. TWIST has the eponymous private investigator returning, against his better judgement, to the city of nightmares to look into the strange case of a dead philosophy student. THE MAN UPSTAIRS introduces hard boiled Frank Miller, discovering he’s a fictional detective and that his author is plotting to kill him.

Mark also writes psychological and supernatural thrillers. SILVER finds journalist and crime writer Nick Slater obsessed with an unpublished manuscript that a best-selling author was working on when she was murdered, and which her family refuse to publish. SEXTET explores the twisted rivalry between twin sisters, the weird games they played as children, and the rising murder rate in a small English town. COFFIN MAKER is a gothic tale. Death is sent two apprentices amid warnings from an out-of-favour priest that the devil has arrived on Earth. Mark’s latest book PAINTED FIRE finds a writer travelling to America’s West Coast in a desperate bid to find a cure for a baffling illness afflicting his wife. An anonymous benefactor has offered to help, but at what price?

The Ex by S.E. Lynes / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @SELynesAuthor

The love of your life… or a deadly mistake?

It’s hard, meeting your ex after so much time apart. You remember the tears and accusations, the desperate look on his face as he punched the wall, but you try not to show it. You smile politely, even while your heart beats faster.

You watch as he looks down into the stroller, at the beautiful blond-haired blue-eyed baby kicking his little legs in the sunshine, whose innocent smile lights up your world.

You see his face change. You know what he’s thinking.

The next day he calls. His voice is shaking. He wants the truth. Is it his child?

You hesitate, your throat dry, good and bad memories swirling in your mind. You’ve missed him so much… but can you ever trust him again?

You decide that the most important thing is doing what’s right for baby Tom. But months later, when the sirens wail in the night, you have to admit: you never thought either of you would go this far…

Review

One day you meet the love of your life. At least that’s how it feels. You are floating on a pink cloud. The world is a better place and it seems like the sun shines everyday.

Little by little though your eyes open and you see the truth. The pink cloud is turning into a dark grey one and you decide to leave to save yourself.

Time passes and suddenly you see that person you thought spending the rest of your life with again. Have they been keeping something live changing from you? You need to know and there is only one way forward: ask the question that is driving you crazy.

From that moment on everything changes for our main characters Sam and Naomi. Is it in a good or a bad way?

If you would ask Sam, he would definitely say in a very good way. The best even, in fact. Even though he has to deal with a very devastating event, he has his lovely girlfriend to stand by him, to pull him through.

If you would ask Naomi, she would definitely say in the best possible way. She has never felt better, because every day she comes a step closer to get the life she always dreamed of.

Love and marriage. They go together like a horse and carriage… That’s how the song goes. Let’s hope you did not pick a dark horse, because it can lead to the carriage going of the rails…

Lies, deceit, love, pain. These are a few of the emotions you will encounter in this great book. Some of the things that are going on, you can read between the lines. Believe me though, there is more.

A very captivating read. 5 stars

Thank you

Childhood Sweetheart by Wendy Clarke / #Review #BooksOnTour @bookouture @WendyClarke99

Bang. Bang. Bang. I jump as the knocks on the window crash above the roaring wind outside. Who could it be, at this late hour? I open the curtains and peer outside. ‘Hello?’ But the dark, the rain and the empty lane are all I see. It’s been eleven years since I last saw Jonah, after his brother died that stormy summer night. And now, without warning, he’s back, living in his old house next door just like old times, on the remote Scottish island that is home. Where I used to imagine we’d stay, together, forever, sharing our lives and our secrets as we always had. But that was before.Jonah’s not the sweet boy I once knew. His mood is changeable, his behaviour unstable, our brief conversations are forced and awkward. And then the knocks on my window begin. It can only be him, but why, and what does he want? I used to love him. Now I don’t even want to invite him in.Because after all these years, I see our childhood secrets, the ones we swore never to reveal, in a newly terrifying light. Was his brother’s death truly an accident? Could Jonah’s secrets have been worth killing for? And how safe am I now, on this isolated island, with the man I used to love…?

Review

Imagine this. A beautiful lake. Trees. Birdsong. Your next door neighbour living a few miles away.  Sounds nice, right? Well, yes? Some people like to live in a secluded place. I admit it can be very peaceful and wonderful.

Not for me though. I don’t want to live in a busy city centre either. My preference goes to a mixture of both. A lovely little village where you can still hear the birds  and spot a rabbit, squirrel or hedgehog playing in your garden. Shops within walking distance and people to stop and have a chat with is more my kind of style.

Ailsa feels more at ease on a remote Scottish island. It’s where she is born and grew up. Her life is there. Her job is there. She would not have it any other way. She is happy, but maybe not one hundred percent though. Her mind often wanders back, thinking about her childhood sweetheart.

She would love to see him again. You know the saying  “be careful what you wish for?” You really should…

I like the way the author alternated between the past and the present thus revealing every little detail we need.

The story is slow paced in the beginning, giving me the feeling I was reading a drama rather than a psychological thriller. Fear not. The author uses this to prepare you for what is still to come. I promise you it’s as great as it is shocking.

I picked a few of the hints up, but boy oh boy, the author still hit me with surprises left, right and centre.

A great book. Once again I realise how well people can keep things hidden if they want to. 5 stars.

Thank you
