Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

Writing for me comes in the moment, I have to wait to be called by it and let it run through me until the energy has gone. It comes because I write about domestic abuse and as I have lived experiences I  wait for the right headspace but also the reason to write, this could be because of a trigger (almost like therapy for me), because of a significant growth moment or because of a dream I have woken from. It feels the same with preference on where I would write as I don’t have a special place but depending on the project I am working on will influence how I write. It could be when I wake up in the middle of the night and at my desk with only the lamp on, it could be in a coffee shop or when I travel on the train. Ultimately it is about the moment I am experiencing.

Do you have a certain ritual?

I am free flowing but I guess it could be that this has gone into a ritual. I think the only thing that is the same with every time I prepare to write is having everything I need in front of me, a cuppa, my laptop, a notepad and a pen. I can’t do anything before having these items ready for me.

Is there a drink or some food that keeps you company while you write?

My go to drink is a hot cup of English breakfast tea which usually has gone cold by the time I get to it.  I tend to stay away from food as it interrupts my flow but after a writing session I need to sugar myself up with a chocolatey reward.

What is your favourite book?

The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I read her book when I was a young adult and I couldn’t put it down, it was the first book that I felt I needed to keep tabs on what was happening and in which year. I was amazed and impressed by Niffenegger’s writing style and the construction of this book.

Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?

Yes, I have currently explored fiction, non-fiction and an activity book. The next will be a children’s book which feels more of a vulnerable area but one I am keen to complete because of my children and youth work background.

Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?

My first book, Isolation Junction, is based on true events and you can see familiarities through the characters with those who were a part of that journey. I think any characters that come to mind have the characteristics of someone I have known or people watched at some point.

Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?

Yes, I usually do because you never know when a moment or a feeling needs to be written down and kept to reference at some point. I also find this useful if I am traveling and want to use an area as a potential location. If I don’t have my notebook then my notes app on my phone is the next best thing, if only you could see the amount of notes on there.

Which genre do you not like at all?

I would like to say Sci-Fi but saying this I do enjoy some Sci-Fi in some TV programmes, I don’t think I have ever given it a chance and perhaps this is worth exploring.

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

My husband, he has helped me through my journey and seeing it through his eyes would be helpful to others who are supporting a partner recovering from an abusive relationship. It would make for a great self help book, perhaps this is a project worth exploring.
