Q&A
– When and where do you prefer to write?
At my desk, in front of my windows to the world, with two cats beside my laptop.
– Do you have a certain ritual?
I get up quite early and walk three miles every day, then I either do some yoga or go to the gym. Home for breakfast, read the headlines, check email, then hunker down and write.
– Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?
Coffee if I’m writing in the morning. Water or iced tea if it’s afternoon.
– What is your favourite book?
Elena Ferrante’s ‘friend’ series, books by Patricia Highsmith and Pascal Garnier, so many.
– Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?
I started out as a copywriter and wrote speeches, catalog copy, articles, training materials. I wrote an early e-book and sold it as a PDF before amazon was selling digital books; it was about planning for the last part of one’s life financially, spiritually, etc. I kind of like the genre I’m in now, women’s fiction. It flows well for me and I have so many ideas for future stories. But who knows what the future will bring?
– Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
Stories are often inspired by people I know, but no, my characters come to me as new acquaintances that I have to get to know.
– Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
Of course. And I have a memo app on my phone.
– Which genre do you not like at all?
Military, and macho guy stories.
– If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
Flannery O’Connor.
– If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
I’ve spent a lot of time in the city of Amsterdam and love the light and dark sides of it. I’d like to get to know more about its contrasts which I think could provide the backdrop for a rich novel.
