1. When and where do you prefer to write?
Whenever I can find the time – I’ll scribble ideas in notebooks or on my laptop in coffee shops, trains, boats and planes but for revising and editing I like to work at my desk.
2. Do you have a certain ritual?
Not really but I like writing in scenes rather than in a linear way and then bring it all together for the first draft.
3. Is there a drink of some food that keeps you company while you write?
A strong coffee helps me get going. After that tea (and the odd glass of wine while writing, not editing!)
4. What is your favourite book?
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier – it has everything: a house of secrets, fantastic setting, great narrative voice
5. Do you consider writing a different genre in the future?
I have a cozy crime series up my sleeve but it’s taking a while to get onto the page!
6. Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
Never wholly. My characters are a mix of lots of tiny things from different people or in my imagination
7. Do you take a notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
Yes I love my notebooks! I have different sizes for different bags and occasions – although this does mean I waste a lot of time hunting through for the right notes
8. Which genre do you not like at all?
I think if a book’s brilliantly written it can be set anywhere any time. That said, I wouldn’t jump at a book that was set in space
9. If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
What a wonderful question – co-writing a book with Erin Kelly would be my dream!
10. If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
Again great question. So many places to choose from – I’m going to say Morocco. I’m sure it would inspire me to write something!
