Q&A
When and where do you prefer to write?
I prefer to write at home, in the morning, before anyone else is up. I’ve got a gravity chair that is set up with a wireless keyboard that I type into my laptop. When I’m at home, that’s my ideal set-up. During re-writes, revisions, and edits, I tend to do those at my desktop. I guess it creates a different mindset. Actually, I’m on the road a lot, so I tend to do much of my writing in a hotel room. That’s not usually as comfortable as my gravity chair, but it gets the job done.
Do you have a certain ritual?
Not really. When I started writing my first novel ages ago, I had a habit of reading over what I had written the day before. It was kind of a mental exercise to get back in the swing of things each day. But now, after six books, I’m usually ready to go. I learned a great tip from Steve Berry a few years back and that was to stop writing in the middle of what you know is going on. That way, when you come back tomorrow, you know where to pick up.
Do you like a drink or something to nibble on while you write?
Coffee. Lots of it. With French Vanilla Creamer and Stevia.
Do you consider writing a different genre or do you already do that?
I just did! My first five books were thrillers in the military/espionage genre. Kind of like ‘Top Gun meets The House of Cards.” My latest novel, The Pilate Scroll is a Christian Thriller. One of my early endorsers described it as “Indiana Jones meets God’s Not Dead.” I’m looking forward to writing other books in this genre.
What is/are your favourite book(s)?
Wow, there are so many. But let’s be realistic, my favorite book is the Bible. Really. I’ve read through the entire book at least five times, the New Testament a few more times than that. As far as books in my genres, I’m a big fan of books Brad Thor, Jerry Jenkins, Brad Taylor, James R. Hannibal, Greg Iles, and Clive Cussler.
Do you sometimes base your characters on people you know?
Haha! Every author gets asked this question . . . because it’s a legitimate question. And the answer for me is probably the same as other authors. Yes . . . sort of. A lot of times, we create characters and give them characteristics based on people we know, but the wise author will not make an exact representation of someone. That could lead to trouble both personally and legally. But I think it’s safe to say that there’s a little bit of the author in every one of their characters.
If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
Great question! Wish I had an answer. I’ve got a couple of friends, Jeff Wilson and Brian Andrews, who collaborate on a very successful Military Thriller series. Their secret to success is they genuinely get along and have a good idea of each other’s strengths and weaknesses. So, I think co-writing a book would be something I’d like to do when I run across that person who I click with in a manner to get the best story out possible. Someone who can build on my weaknesses and who I can help with theirs.
Do you take a (digital) notebook everywhere in order to write down ideas that pop up?
Have you been following me? Haha! I sure do! I carry an iPhone and iPad. If I have time and space, I’ll break out the iPad, open up MS Word and take notes. If not, I’ll use my phone and jot something down in Notes. I’ll also usually generate outlines on the iPad while I’m traveling, and then flesh those out when I get home. If I’m caught without either one of those, I’ll write a note on a piece of paper and stick it in my pocket. You never know when the germ of an idea can take root. Sometimes the note may just add depth or detail to a work in progress; sometimes it can be the catalyst for an entire book.
Which genre(s) do you not like at all?
Outside of erotica, I don’t know of any I dislike. I think there’s a lot to learn from reading books outside of your genre; it’s how you grow as an author. I try not to criticize other books/genres, because I know how hard it is to write a book. Reaching outside of your genre can help your writing as well. When I wrote my second Military Thriller, Veil of Deception, I was worried that my book was too technical. The last thing I wanted to do was write a Techno-Thriller (I didn’t want to alienate a lot of my audience). So, I reached out early in the process and found a developmental editor . . . of Romance novels. I figured if I could get her to understand what I was writing about, I was on the right track. And it worked! She identified the parts that were too technical and helped smooth out the rough edges.
If you should travel to a foreign country to do research, which one would you chose and why?
I’ve been very blessed in my primary career as an Air Force pilot, and now as an airline pilot, to see a large part of the world. I flew almost four years as an international pilot and fit many of these locations in the books I’ve written or plan to. It adds the extra depth to the story, and I’ve been very fortunate to have that opportunity. Sometimes, like in the case of The Pilate Scroll, my trips even inspire a book. When my wife and I were on a trip to Israel, it was so life changing and inspirational, I just felt there was a story waiting to be told. And here we are.
