Jelvia: Not Human Book 1

Macy’s life changed forever when, as a child, her mother was murdered. The killers were never found, and Macy grew up looking for injustices and making them right.

She became a journalist, interviewing celebrities but lately found stardom shallow and pretentious.

There was just no putting right a teen-idol rockstar.

Things changed when her best friend was attacked but rescued by an unlikely hero.

The hero was a Jelvia.

Humans lived in fear of the Jelvia.

The Jelvia killed humans for fun.

Macy just saw a hero that she’d been looking for all her life.

This sci-fi romance contains some mature scenes, but if you’re looking for a hero, drop right in!

Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

My garage has been converted into an office setup with my desk, computer, radio, kettle, vodka, snack drawer… and I do all my writing there. I’m contemplating getting a lock for the door as well. Gotta keep people out!

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

No, quite the opposite. I like a radio playing in the background, so it’s not just music but also the DJ and his waffling. I find it helps, mainly because I can turn it off when I want to. It adds to my power.

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

I’ve had this discussion with a writer friend (A. D Stewart, FINDING YOU – A Gift of Memories book 1). We discussed writing a collection of short erotic stories, but although I enjoy writing spicey romance, I don’t think erotica is for me—or rather, readers of erotica would find my sex scenes bland!

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Oh, the baddie, by far! Mahwah! Who wants to be kind-hearted Snow White when you can be the evil Queen!

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

I’ve interviewed Matt Dunn, a male romcom’s answer to Sophie Kinsella, but I’d like to grab—er—interview Dean Koontz. He’s frigging amazing! Dunn’s interview can be found here, under my real name: https://louisewise.blogspot.com/2013/04/dishing-dirt-with-best-selling-author.html

Where can I find you when you are reading?

In the evening, I’ll be on my settee, with my three cats, in front of the fire. But during the day, I’ll be still with my cats, but outside in the garden and probably freezing my arse off.

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

You won’t. I don’t like people. I tend to go off on long bike rides or runs. You might find me at the gym (recently joined), but if it’s full of too many people, I’ll cancel my membership. I am so anti-social lately. When someone says ‘hello/good morning’ to me, I’m muttering expletives beneath my breath while saying ‘Hi’ back through gritted teeth. Please tell me I’m not the only one like this!

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

It’s my nasal passages! I smell books first. I’m a sniffer and get some odd looks from people in stores though I do see nods of ‘yeah, I do that, too,’ so I know I’m not the only one (for once!).

How do you come up with a title for your book?

Sometimes, titles jump at me, and I think, yeah, that’s a one. But with HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO, I really struggled. The story is based on journalist Macy Shaw, whose mother was murdered when Macy was a child. So, naturally, Macy would like nothing more than to avenge her mother’s death, but she can’t because the killer is already in prison and serving his sentence. So, in Macy’s subconscious mind, she hunts for heroic figures to make things better again. Hence, the title HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO refers to Macy as she finds her hero.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

Because my main characters are aliens, I can never find a picture that looks like them, so it’s challenging, and also all the images are of beautiful people! My characters are often flawed, making it doubly difficult. But I use Amanda Horan’s services, and she always comes up trumps. I have an alien background on the cover of all the books in the series, but the main picture will be the lead characters on the cover.

About the author

If T.E Kessler were Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones), the introduction would read something like this:

T. E Kessler the first of the Midlands in Great Britain, Queen of sci-fi romance, Mother of the Jelvia: Not Human series, Writer of books, Ruler of the TV, the Unburnt in the kitchen and the Breaker of promises (when it comes to diets).

On a serious note, Kessler enjoys writing sci-fi because of the blank canvas it presents to her. While she can invent science, worlds, aliens and creatures, she also injects strong emotion into the core of her books. She likes to explore human failures and victories in modern-day society and mix them with sci-fi themes, so expect to find human tragedies while turning the pages.

Her books contain mature themes.
