Q&A
When and where do you prefer to write?
I write every chance I get. I’m a busy father of two and work full time as a Biology teacher, so I take every spare moment. I write on breaks, at lunch, when the kids are in bed; on my phone, iPad or laptop.
Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?
No, that’s not really an option in my life. Happily, I can write almost anywhere, so long as my kids are busy elsewhere. I prefer some background music or a busy café or pub.
If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?
I’d love to write with Robin Hobb, but I’m not in her league. Few writers are. I’ve collaborated with Ryan Bracha several times, a favourite indie writer of mine, but generally I reckon most writers are fairly solitary creatures.
Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the good one or the bad one?
Wouldn’t make a difference to me.
Who would you like/have liked to interview?
I’d love to interview Robin Hobb. She’s my all-time literary hero.
Where can I find you when you are reading?
Practically anywhere. I always have a kindle with me.
Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?
I spend most of my spare time with my kids especially this year. We generally are up to something together. Other than that, out and about walking around Edinburgh.
What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?
I’ve always found it quite a weird experience. It’s nice, but a bit surreal. After abnout two years, I’ll usually pick it up, have a flick through and allow myself a ‘looks alright’.
How do you come up with a title for your book?
Most of my titles have come to me before the book has been written. Occasionally I cherry pick from quotes or sayings that fit the theme.
How do you pick a cover for your book?
Again, I normally have a fixed idea of what I want, begin with a central Image and adapt form there. I’ve worked with several publishers who also have decent processes for cover design. I usually find publishers come up with covers I wouldn’t consider on my own, which is sometimes a good thing.
