Who is Maddie?

If she doesn’t find out…she’ll die.

Tormented by visions of a woman’s death, maths student Maddie’s search for answers leads her to question her own origins and puts her life in danger.

Who’s trying to kill her?

Why?

It’s the most critical problem she’ll ever have to solve…

And she’s only got three weeks.

Fresh out of the shower I’m in my skimpy robe, still wearing my oh-so-sexy shower cap and there she is. She’s shamelessly helping herself to my marmite. Again. It still shocks me to see her newly coloured hair and it reminds me of the mess she left in the bathroom when she bleached it. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery but she’s pushing it.

No sign of him though. ‘For god’s sake Sophie. Can’t you two keep it down a bit? I’ve hardly had any sleep at all the last few days. And I’m having bad dreams when I do.’

‘Morning Madds.’

Grr. She knows only my real friends call me Madds.

‘Did anyone ever tell you how dumb you look in that thing? Even my mother doesn’t use them nowadays. Oh, and by the way, other people’s dreams are so boring.’

‘How about listening to two people having very loud bad sex?’

‘You’re jealous.’

‘Of your caveman? Really?’

‘Well, you won’t have to put up with our ecstatic lovemaking for much longer. I’m moving out.’

What did she say? Is she for real? ‘You can’t! You absolutely can’t do that. What about the lease?’

‘Madds, I’m not engaging with you when you’re being provocative.’

She finishes the last piece of her toast and my marmite just as her bedroom door opens. Instinctively I whip off the cap and shake my hair loose.

‘Morning blondie.’

The caveman winks at me. Ugh. ‘Don’t tell me you’re moving in with him?’

She’s grinning, she actually is moving in with him.

‘Laters.’

Look at her mess. ‘What about your breakfast stuff?’

‘Laters,’ she repeats and they’re gone leaving me to deal with the leftovers.

Damn. If she goes that’ll be the end of my lifts into town. I can cope with that but the rent is another matter. She promised me she’d stay for the whole year and the lease is in my name.

Mum needs to know.

Then again, Sophie’s so unreliable, she might change her mind again. I won’t bother Mum just yet. And there’s no point waiting for her. There are more important things to do. There’s my awesome idea for my dissertation which needs fleshing out and I’ll need to do some research in the library.

Get on with it Madds.

About the author

Jane writes novels, short stories and poems, usually with a good dose of humour in them. She’s probably owes it all to her late grandmother who, she’s just found out, also wrote short stories and poems. She tends to get an idea and then run with it whether it be a 100 word short story or an 80 thousand word novel. It all depends on the voices in her head at the time…
