Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

Ideally, I prefer to write first thing in the morning. I like to wake up, have breakfast and drink a strong coffee before jumping straight into it. I get up at half five to write. Even at the weekends I like to start writing early.

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

Yes, I definitely prefer peace and quiet which is another reason why I get up early to write. I have three kids and their body clocks all differ. I like to shut myself away in my study to write, but that means nothing. They are never happier than when they are disturbing me!

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

It’s an interesting question. I’ve tried without success to co-write a number of times but my co-writers always drop out before they’ve written a word. So if any authors out there are wanting to co-write then drop me a message! I’m always looking to push myself and this would be a wonderful challenge. In regards to this question, I don’t have a specific person in mind. I admire many authors and I feel an author who enjoys merging genres would suit me best.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

I’ve been a character in a book before (I was killed off, incidentally!). I don’t mind really. It’s nice to be featured as a character no matter what the author has in stall for you!

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

Probably Peter Benchley (author of Jaws). I’m intrigued by his books which are mostly set in and around the ocean. Also to understand is love of sharks that ironically, and quite accidentally, turned millions of people against the fish he loved.

Where can I find you when you are reading?

Usually in bed. I read last thing at night, and then at the weekend I’ll wake up and read before getting up to write.

Where can I find you wen you are not writing/reading?

I am either watching sport (football, Boxing or MMA), or watching true crime documentaries. I also play the drums and play football. I like to go out walking with the family – this means which ever of the kids I can get out of the house!

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

I’m always completely proud to hold it. I’m the only person on the planet who knows everything I’ve put into each and every book. I write a lot of books (4 or 5 a year) but I never rush a book. Likewise, each book is still important to me and I try to continue to promote each and every one of the same.

How do you come up with a title for your book?

This book is an anthology. I wanted a title that suggested it was a mix. The genres differ but are predominantly crime. To me, I envisaged a local coffee shop where friends gathered and shared stories with each other. Tales From A Coffee Pot seemed fitting.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

As with the previous question, the cover needed to show that it was packed with different stories, so I came up with the concept of polaroid pictures showing different things that suggest a whole range of adventures
