Interview

When and where do you prefer to write?

I prefer to find a quiet place. I get distracted quite quickly, so usually in the evenings when people are in bed or at school on the weekends when no one else is around. During the summer, when others aren’t home, I will go on the porch and write.

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

I do. For me, I picture the novel in my head as I’m writing, so I can’t be multi-tasking while I am.

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

It MUST be Stephen King. Since I was eight, I was sneaking his books. At the age of 46, I have grown up with him in my life, a constant reader of his works. It would be an honor and pleasure even to discuss the art of writing with him, much less co-write.

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

It depends on if they connect their characters to specific people. For example, I’d like to think I’m a good person, but if it’s merely the name used for a villain, I’d be honored.

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

Mary Shelley, Stephen King, Lee Harvey Oswald

Where can I find you when you are reading?

It depends on the time of year. During the summer, I like to go on the porch with a coffee or beer and read. During the winter, in a chair near the window so that I can watch it snow. But, I do read every night before bed.

Where can I find you when you are not writing/reading?

I have a full-time job as a high school history teacher. When I’m not working, I attend my daughter’s sporting events (volleyball and basketball). Other than that, I’m at home, keeping busy, and spending time with family.

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

I enjoy the adventure of not knowing what it is even about. But, of course, I read a lot of non-fiction to increase my knowledge of events, so that’s not always the case.

How do you come up with a title for your book?

It just comes to me at the beginning. I don’t put a lot of time into it as my focus is what’s within the novel itself. I have changed novel titles through rewrites. Most times, it’s a slight variation of the original work.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

I am very fortunate to have the publisher offer me a cover for MAN OF CLAY. I had no idea where I wanted to go with it, as I in no way wanted to promote the Nazis. However, what was done was classy and a perfect representation of the novel itself. I am sure if I had asked for other options, they’d be willing.
