The Irish Fortune Series, Book 1

He’s come to Ireland to escape his past. She’s trying to run from her future.

It’s 1843 and the English nobleman Quinton Williams has come to Ireland to oversee the run-ning of his father’s ailing estate and escape his painful past. Here he meets the alluring Alan-nah O’Neill, whose Irish family is one of few to have retained ownership of their land, the rest having been supplanted by the English over the course of the country’s bloody history. Finding herself drawn to the handsome Englishman, Alannah offers to help Quin communi-cate with the estate’s Gaelic-speaking tenants, as much to assist him as to counter her own en-nui. Aware of her controlling brother’s hostility towards the English, she keeps her growing relationship with Quin a secret – a secret that cannot, however, be kept for long from those who dream of ridding Ireland of her English oppressors

“Thank you for your honesty, Kieran,” Quin said quietly.

Kieran looked startled at Quin’s words but shrugged dismissively. He cleared his throat and fiddled with the tablecloth, evidently feeling uncomfortable.

“You know,” I remarked after a moment, “I believe this may call for another early morning foray into the whiskey decanter.”

“I believe you may be right, Mrs Williams.” Quin grinned. He got up and collected the decanter and three glasses from the sideboard.

“We haven’t even finished breakfast,” Kieran protested, trying to sound shocked while one corner of his mouth lifted in grudging amusement.

“By all means, do continue.” I waved my hand. “I think I’m quite done with the edibles myself.”

Quin laughed and handed me a glass containing a generous portion of amber liquid. The smell alone made me feel slightly intoxicated.

“To new beginnings,” Quin said once he had handed Kieran his glass and poured some whiskey for himself.

“To new beginnings,” Kieran and I echoed the toast, raising our tumblers in unison.

Kieran caught my eye and gave me a lopsided smile.

“Sláinte,” he said and drained the contents in a single gulp.

He came up coughing and sputtering. I smiled at him while I sipped my own whiskey demurely, savouring the taste of the sharp liquid before it snaked down my throat, dulling my senses in a not unpleasant way.

“I believe I’m starting to enjoy the water of life,” I observed in some surprise, looking down into my glass.

“I’d say you were beyond enjoying it if that’s what you call it,” Quin retorted with a grin.

I looked at him quizzically until comprehension dawned.

“Oh…” I nodded slowly. “The water of life is what whiskey is called in Gaelic.”

“Well, that would explain why the natives like it so much,” Quin responded with a laugh before draining his glass.

“No doubt you’re right,” I said, smiling at him, “I don’t know many Irishmen who wouldn’t rise from their deathbeds for a drink of uisce beatha.”

“Ishke beha?” Quin tried to get his tongue around the unfamiliar sounds, making me laugh.

“Not bad. We’ll have you speaking the Gaelic before you know it.”

Quin snorted and reached for the whiskey decanter once more. He cocked his head towards Kieran, who held out his glass for another dram. I put my hand over my own glass and shook my head, one was more than enough for me.

“I’m sure my father will be delighted.”

About the author

Juliane is actually a scientist. She holds degrees in physiology and zoology, including a PhD in physiology. During her studies she realised, however, that her passion lay not in conducting scientific research herself, but in writing about it. Thus began her career as a medical writer, where she took on all manner of writing and editing tasks, in the process honing her writing skills, until she finally plucked up the courage to write her first historical novel, Under the Emerald Sky. The book is the first in The Irish Fortune Series, which is set in 19th century Ireland around the time of the Great Famine.

Juliane lives with her husband and two sons in Hamelin, Germany, the town made famous by the story of the Pied Piper.
