Hearts of Gold, Book 1

Raised in the shadow of a mother who defied convention, but won’t allow her own daughter the right to make the same choices, heiress Evangeline Lindenmayer has been groomed since childhood to marry into the British aristocracy.

When Lindy challenges her mother’s long-laid plans by falling in love with a poor seminary student, the explosion is bigger than the Brooklyn Bridge fireworks on Independence Day.

Q&A

When and where do you prefer to write?

Whenever I can find the time!

Do you need peace and quiet when you are writing?

I do like to have peace and quiet while I write, although sometimes I like to play music from the time period I am writing in, it helps set the mood.

If you had the chance to co-write a book. Whom would it be with?

James Clavell, author of Shogun, my favorite book of all time. However, as he has passed away, that’s not likely to happen!

Say someone asks if they can use your name in a book. Would you rather be the ‘good one’ or the ‘bad one’?

Oooh, I’d love the chance to be the bad guy.

Who would you like/have liked to interview?

Anya Seton, whose book, Katherine, changed my life at the age of 14.

Where can I find you when you are reading?

Usually curled up in bed.

Where can I find you wen you are not writing/reading?

Antiquing and flea markets, playing with my three grandchildren, or home in the wilds of Kentucky with my two rescue mutts, Ellie and Charlie.

What goes through your mind when you hold your new book in your hands for the first time?

Wow, it’s an amazing feeling, like seeing the face of your baby on the ultrasound for the first time and knowing it’s really real.

How do you come up with a title for your book?

Because my book is set in the Gilded Age, I searched for quotes that had the word ‘gold’ in them and found one by Seneca, an ancient philosopher: Fire is the test of gold; adversity, of men… Seneca (c.3 BC-65 AD) For the 2nd and 3rd books in the Hearts of Gold series, I did the same thing and found some wonderful quotes to use that expressed the themes of the books.

How do you pick a cover for your book?

Actually, my publisher created the cover. Wonderful job.

Thank you, Renee Yancy and The Coffee Pot Book Club
